Holy moly.. I upgraded from a 24" monitor from 2009 that could only do HDMI, DVI, and VGA to two 27" 4K monitors that do HDMI, DisplayPort, and charging/display over USB-C. What a game changer!

I've come to the conclusion that Steam just won't run on #FreeBSD 15. Tried Mizuma, tried linuxulator-steam-utils.. nothing works. I guess the portmgr@ pulling the 32-bit rug out from under the WINE port really screwed things up.
There seem to be no straightforward directions on how to get it working, or everyone running it is still on 14.3.
If you are running Steam on FreeBSD 15 could you tell me how you did it?

I run relayd and httpd for my static site (TCP/443 and 80), syncthing runs on 22000. Not used radicale but I'm sure you can have that listen on a different port if need be.

@nprofile…qkvd I've been playing with the Bastille export and clone commands. Clone was great when I wanted the same jail & data but wanted to try a different config that could potentially break the jail. Came in handy!
Do you know if there are plans to add a --zstd switch to export? I've heard good things about its compression.

Sweet! I got a #FreeBSD 14.3-Release jail.on a 15-Stable host to run WINE games. The game is effectively in a nice little sandbox and doesn't affect the host.

One of the most infuriating aspects of food packaging in the U.K.
Not only does very little plastic get recycled anyway... The fact I would have to lug this type of specific plastic back to some supermarket to turn it for "recycling" instead of being picked up at the kerb is frankly downright insulting.

Has anyone run into an issue in #WireGuard in which the Endpoint is a fully qualified domain name (e.g. vpn.example.org:51820) and the tunnel won't work, but it will work if you put in the IP address (which is IPv4)? I wonder if it has to do with having both IPv4 and IPv6 stacks running and active at the same time on the client and it can't, for some reason our another, establish the tunnel correctly?

I think I might keep either NetBSD or OpenBSD on my 8th gen laptop.. Leaning towards going back to OpenBSD on it since I do need a machine to update ports on it (I maintain about 5 OpenBSD ports... So it's for a good cause, sorry NetBSD fans!)
I must say, NetBSD gives an extremely easy install experience with that 90s UNIX feeling. It's a very solid BSD.
On my newer 12th gen laptop I plan on ditching Void Linux when FreeBSD 15 comes out and putting FreeBSD on it since it has an AX201 WiFi chipset so it can actually do 802.11ac.
I guess I need more computers! 😂

Decided to install #NetBSD 10.1 on my 8th gen Intel laptop. I had FreeBSD 14.3 on there and tried upgrading to 15.0-BETA3 only to run into loads of package conflicts and it seems pkg decided to talk to the 2 same repos. Not sure what went wrong there. Anyway the NetBSD install went OK. Just need to have a good play around with it.
I haven't used NetBSD since the early 2000's when I installed it on a SparcStation IPX.

Anyone know how to force #dovecot to rebuild itself after restoring mail from backups? doveadm force-sync/index are useless because dovecot thinks the mailbox doesn't exist. What's even weirder is "doveadm mailbox list" actually shows mailboxes dovecot thinks don't exist. Any ideas?

It's been a while since I looked at #WINE on #FreeBSD. I installed wine-devel 10.12 and noticed the game I had tried to get working made the vm.aslr_restarts counter (which is read-only) increase when I ran the game.
I tried with another game which I know works and the counter didn't increase.
So it seems aslr is interfering with this game. I set all the variables containing 'aslr' to 0 in sysctl. No change. The vm.aslr_restarts counter still went up. Even tried 'elfctl +noaslr /use/local/bin/wine64.bin'.
Still no change. It seems aslr can't be disabled for WINE for some reason.

Microsoft lies again.
Client uses Microsoft shite for Outlook/Email.
In April 2025, client gets emailed a notification about Oauth2 being rammed down their throats.
The email says July 2025 the accounts using basic authentication get deactivated.
SMTP failures started showing up on 19th of June! A full 12 days before they say they would deactivate them.
Meanwhile, our developers had some time boxed out to "figure it out" back in April.
Did they do anything? NOPE! 😂

Does #FreeBSD have some kind of sshd connection throttling mechanism that is outside the PerSourcePenalties config? (I set mine to 'no')
Use blacklist is set to no.
pf is not running either.
Getting really strange intermittent timeouts where I just can't log in yet I can get to the banner with telnet on port 22.
Some PAM thing with FreeBSD perhaps?
Running tcpdump, the FreeBSD machine is constantly sending its own list of KexAlgorithms until the connection times out.
FreeBSD is based sshd: 9.9p2

Have been messing around with #wine on #FreeBSD .. it doesn't seem to run a certain game. I noticed its launcher is patching a .DLL in memory and it looks like FreeBSD doesn't allow this (which is probably a great security feature) but it's breaks the game. Any ideas on how to fix?
I wish there was a place with an explanation of all the knobs and dials in FreeBSD's sysctl, loader.conf etc

I'm convinced something's not right with #voidlinux suspend/resume. Does mate-power-manager conflict with elogind? I do have:

in /etc/elogind/logind.conf
It seems to start the freeze for sleep process, but then the laptop actually sleeps before it finishes those processes, do when you wake it back up, it's killed the WiFi after it resumes then after a minute or two, fixes itself.
Anyone know how to fix this? Nothing meaningful in /var/log/messages, sadly.

I've dumped Hugo and converted my blog to @nprofile…sr9k 's BSSG!
It looks a little barebones but that's fine. The content is all there and it loads fast.
I did run into a snag. Don't init your BSSG environment into a directory path that includes a '.' otherwise it won't find your markdown files to generate.
(I was using ~/.local/share/blog but just moved it into ~/blog .. I was just trying to simplify my $HOME)
This really makes me want to write again!

Been reading about this malware China is using written for Linux:

and it struck me: Why mount /tmp and /var/tmp without noexec, nodev, nosuid? Seems crazy to allow a directory anyone can write to, to run executables.
While we're at it, get rid of wget and curl and anything else that would allow them to even get a "dropper" on the system?
Isn't this common sense stuff?!

Hey #UK #fediverse #sysadmins / #network folks! How difficult is it to wire a British house built in 1950? I got limited power sockets, the fibre comes into the house next to the front door & it would be nice to stick the WiFi AP in the direct centre of the house. How difficult is it to run ethernet cabling? I am not really a home DIYer so any tips would be appreciated.
Please boost far & wide for coverage and many thanks in advance!

Once at work, back in 2005 I wanted to run a newer ssh on one of these. I went to boot an OpenBSD CD but realized the external SCSI CDROM drive didn't actually work or boot, but the ethernet worked fine so I ended up netbooting NetBSD (for whatever reason I couldn't netboot OpenBSD).
NetBSD started up fine and ran great on the 40 MHz CPU. 😂👍

@nprofile…zsaa @nprofile…q5wq It doesn't even matter if I have SPF, DKIM, and DMARC checks.. if some random Gmail user sends me spam, it passes all those checks. I report the spammer to Google and they do absolutely nothing about it.
