Happy Ada Lovelace Day! Celebrated every second Tuesday in October in recognition of the achievements of women in STEM, the day is named, of course, in honour of our favourite Victorian computing pioneer - Countess Ada Lovelace, the incredible mathematician, writer & self-described “Analyst & Metaphysician” , who envisioned machines that could compose music, draw & calculate & who wrote what is considered to be the first algorithm for a computer: 100 years before they existed!💻

While the brilliant Lise Meitner (1878-1968) was nominated for the #NobelPrize 49 times for her work – 30 x for Physics & 19 x for Chemistry – she was famously snubbed & only her long-time collaborator Otto Hahn received the award. Yet her legacy lies not in a medal: in solving the puzzle of #nuclearFission, she fundamentally changed our understanding of matter & energy forever.

A rare cosmic tipple! 🥂😉For the first time ever, astronomers have detected a rare form of the organic alcohol #methanol in space. Intriguingly, the molecule is about 100x more abundant than current models predict - a sign there’s still a secret ingredient in cosmic chemistry we’ve yet to uncover!🔭🌟The study, led by Arnaud Belloche of the Max Planck Institute for Radio #Astronomy, is part of the ALMA COMPASS programm. https://www.mpg.de/26834976/first-detection-of-heavy-methanol-in-space?

Let's hear it for orangutan moms! 🥰A 15-year study suggests that wild Bornean #orangutan mothers go out of their way to arrange playdates for their young, even travelling further to seek out age-appropriate playmates. This form of maternal investment highlights the vital role of social play in solitary species. https://www.mpg.de/27017124/orangutan-mothers-seek-out-playmates-for-young?c=2249

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Ada Yonath, who died Aug. 31, aged 87. The structural biologist pioneered cryo-crystallography to map the 3D atomic structure of the ribosome, a breakthrough that earned her the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry & revolutionized modern antibiotic design. Yonath maintained close ties to the Max Planck Society across several decades, leading research units in Berlin and at DESY in Hamburg.

What do you prefer: working from home or days in the office or lab?

2026-06-11 15:07:42 GMT

A typical day working from home can be a lonely affair: 84 per cent of employees spend the entire day without any human contact. And this loss of social interaction isn’t made up for after work: on the contrary, evening get-togethers with friends have actually declined. People who have already spent the day at home seem less likely to make the effort to go out again.
