📢 Call for Submissions 📢
Lip Service Issue 6 is on the shelf, which means it’s time to start work on Issue 7. We’re so excited to see what you come up with for the next theme: On Ageing.

2026-07-24 16:28:03 GMT

- reply

Ageing, although simply the result of passing time, is a phenomenon mired in controversy. From demographic fears about ageing populations to uptake in so-called ‘preventative’ cosmetic procedures, ageing causes all manner of anxieties on an individual as well as population level. This is not only true of ageing in the later stages of life, but at all stages of development.

2026-07-24 16:28:03 GMT

- reply

Societies all over the world track the passing of time in different ways, commemorating milestones at different occasions. A child’s first laugh, menarche, a voice breaking, going off to university or landing your first job, the first time it hurts to sit on the floor, menopause, that red Ferrari purchase, the passing down of an heirloom or a first dance. Some, but not all, of these milestones are marked in the body and the body is where so much of the trepidation around ageing lives.

2026-07-24 16:28:03 GMT

- reply

We’re interested, then, in explorations of what ageing, growing up or growing old means. What does it mean to ‘get old’? Or to age gracefully? Who gets to decide? How are ideas about gender, about disability, sexuality, aesthetics, and power entangled in getting older? How is ageing differently understood, experienced, thought about around the world?

Too hot to exercise in this heat 🥵🔥?
What if there was one exercise you could do without breaking a sweat, and one that could make a real difference to your core strength and stability…
Welcome to your Pelvic Floor!!
Your pelvic floor is a hammock of muscles along the underside of your pelvis which supports your internal organs and plays a crucial role in urinary and faecal continence. Everyone has one, whether you have a vagina or a penis.

But suffice to say we learned our lesson. It never occurred to us that anyone would *want* to steal something under a sign which essentially says "this is very bad for your vagina". So now our cursed predatory vaginal cleaning products are safely displayed behind glass...

And since we're breaking this taboo, let's tell you about the other theft incident we've had at the Vagina Museum: way back in 2019, someone swiped a bar of "virginity restoring soap" from our display of predatory capitalist (and wholly unnecessary) vaginal cleaning products.

Monday morning Vagina Museum deep lore: in this display, we had a magnet which said MILF, and it got stolen so many times that we gave up. We are delighted that our MILF visitors to feel represented but couldn't afford to keep on replacing our MILF magnet.

As the magnets in this display get more faded and bedraggled with every hand that touches them, we can see which words resonate with our visitors the most. Whether that be because they’re familiar or relatable, whether it’s because they’re spot on or dead wrong we can’t say. Nevertheless, we’re intrigued by the insights that emerge.

In our current exhibition, Menopause: What’s Changed?, we ask visitors to consider the language we use to describe menopause and menopausal people. Language matters, it reflects and reinforces stereotypes entwined with misogyny, ageism, and ableism.
How, then, might we rethink our language? How can we reclaim existing language and how might we introduce new language into the mix?

And once the test is all done, be proud of yourself! You've been part of the fight against cervical cancer, and have done something that could literally save your life. So treat yourself - you deserve it!

2026-01-21 12:13:14 GMT

- reply

Some people might not be able to complete the test on a first attempt, and that's okay too. It's not a failure. You may have discovered further adjustments that you'll need for the test to be completed, and it's perfectly fine to re-book the test with the knowledge you've gained.

2026-01-21 12:10:59 GMT

- reply

After the test is done, you might have slight bleeding or spotting, and may also feel cramping. This is because your cervix has just been interacted with, and sometimes it just does that. It's normal if it happens, and nothing to worry about, but contact a healthcare provider if the bleeding or pain is severe.

2026-01-21 12:07:03 GMT

- reply

The test itself involves the nurse opening the speculum so they can see your cervix, then taking a sample of cells with a soft brush. This might feel weird, uncomfortable, or slightly painful. But it shouldn't feel seriously painful. If it does, please communicate this. It means that further adjustments need to be made for you, such as pain relief or specialist care. It might also point to a health condition that you didn't know you had, so it's important to make healthcare providers aware!

2026-01-21 12:03:33 GMT

- reply

In the UK, plastic speculums tend to be used for cervical screening. In some countries, metal speculums are the default. These can feel cold, and you can ask to use a plastic speculum instead.

2026-01-21 12:02:39 GMT

- reply

You're also perfectly allowed to insert the speculum yourself if you'd like to take it at your own pace, or it helps you feel more in control of what's happening. If you're unsure as to how best to put it in, ask the nurse for guidance.

2026-01-21 12:00:09 GMT

- reply

The speculum is a part of the test that a lot of people find scary, painful or traumatic for many reasons. Again, there's adjustments that can be made to make the experience better for you.
Speculums come in lots of sizes. A lot of the time, medium is the default, but that's too big for some of us! You can request a smaller size of speculum.

2026-01-21 11:57:23 GMT

- reply

During the test, the default position is usually lying on your back, feet together, knees apart (or legs up in stirrups in some countries). However, this position doesn't work for everyone. You might have physical or emotional reasons why this isn't right for you. You can ask for an alternative position for your cervical screening, such as lying on your side.

2026-01-21 11:49:58 GMT

- reply

If you have any health conditions which could make the test painful or severely uncomfortable for you, tell the nurse about this. This could be anything from gynaecological health conditions, to mental health, to back pain.
If you have a retroverted uterus (a tilted uterus), let the nurse know, as sometimes it makes your cervix harder to find. This natural variation is frequently only noticed during a first smear test, and you'll be told if you have it!

2026-01-21 11:46:38 GMT

- reply

Meanwhile, other people prefer to zone out entirely, put in headphones and watch something during the test. That's fine too! Cervical screening usually takes about five minutes, so bear that in mind when choosing something to watch. You're probably not going to blast through all of Pluribus.

2026-01-21 11:44:50 GMT

- reply

If there's any words for parts of your body that are off-limits for you for any reason, e.g. trauma or gender dysphoria, tell the nurse about the language you want used.
Some people like to know everything that's going on, and if you're one of those people, ask the nurse to narrate what they're doing.

2026-01-21 11:41:55 GMT

- reply

Once you're at the appointment, talk to the nurse about your preferences and feelings. You might have some adjustments to the test in mind, or you can work together to figure out a way of making the test most comfortable for you. Here's some things you could talk about...
If you've had a previous unpleasant cervical screening appointment talk to the nurse about it, and explain what made it unpleasant for you. They may be able to do something differently.

2026-01-21 11:37:51 GMT

- reply

You also do not need to shave or wax your vulva. The test works just fine with pubic hair, and the nurse sees tons of vulvas every day in every hairstyle imaginable. So just like regular life, what you do with your pubes is your business alone.

2026-01-21 11:35:51 GMT

- reply

We would suggest that you probably shouldn't wear dungarees, rompers or jumpsuits to your cervical screening appointment though - anything where you have to get a bit naked in order to use the loo will also apply during your cervical screening!

2026-01-21 11:34:29 GMT

- reply

A lot of invitation letters say "wear a dress" but lots of us don't wear dresses for various reasons ranging from it not being your style, to being a man. You don't need to wear a dress. The reason they suggest this is because during the test you'll need to undress the lower half of your body. During the test, your vulva will be covered by a drape, but some people feel exposed anyway. Baggy t-shirts or big jumpers are just as covering as a dress - wear what you feel comfortable in!

2026-01-21 11:31:08 GMT

- reply

On the day, some people need to get themselves into the headspace for cervical screening, so make sure you choose a day where you're able to take time for yourself before and after the test.

2026-01-21 11:29:09 GMT

- reply

Just like getting the haircut you want or having good sex, communication is key to making your cervical screening as comfortable as possible. This communication starts from the moment you book your appointment. If you hate waiting, it might be a good idea to book the very first appointment of the day. And if you feel like you'll need more time at the appointment because of adjustments you'll need, you can book a double appointment.

2026-01-21 11:25:51 GMT

- reply

At every stage of cervical screening, you're in charge. Healthcare providers can make adjustments to the test so that it is accessible to you. Remember this.

It's also worth noting that some cervical cancers are NOT related to HPV, so be aware of changes to your body. The main symptoms to be aware of are unusual bleeding (e.g. bleeding between periods, bleeding after sex, or bleeding after menopause), changes to your discharge, and pelvic pain.

2026-01-20 11:47:59 GMT

- reply

It's worth noting that vaccination is not 100% protective. If you're vaccinated, you'll still need to attend cervical screening.

2026-01-20 11:46:09 GMT

- reply

Screening and vaccination put together mean that HPV-related cervical cancer could be eliminated. The NHS aims to eliminate HPV by 2040 by using these tools.

2026-01-20 11:44:42 GMT

- reply

The other tool is vaccination. The vaccine is most effective and protective if given before you become sexually active, so in the UK it's offered at age 12 or 13 in schools. All young people are offered the jab.

2026-01-20 11:42:13 GMT

- reply

The first tool we have is cervical screening, AKA the smear test. This test takes a sample from cells on your cervix to test for high risk HPV, and if you have high-risk HPV, this sample will also be checked for any changes to cells in your cervix.
This enables any potential cancer to be caught very early and removed so it cannot spread!

2026-01-20 11:36:53 GMT

- reply

But in great news, we have two weapons at our disposal to fight cervical cancer caused by HPV - which is up to 97% of cervical cancers!

2026-01-20 11:35:57 GMT

- reply

Most of us will have HPV at some point in our lives. Most of the time, if HPV is passed on, your body will clear the infection, and you won't even know you've had it. But sometimes the HPV sticks around, and high risk strains can cause cancer.

2026-01-20 11:34:23 GMT

- reply

HPV is a very common infection. Many strains of it are completely harmless, but some are a risk factor for cancer. As well as cervical cancer, high-risk HPV strains are linked to cancers of the vulva, vagina, penis, anus and mouth.
These forms of HPV are transmitted during all sorts of sex - not just penis in vagina, but also via fingers, mouths and sex toys.

2026-01-20 11:31:44 GMT

This week is #CervicalCancerPreventionWeek. This cancer is highly preventable in the present day, because we know a lot about its cause: this horrid little dude, human papillomavirus (HPV). With what we know about HPV and its link to cervical cancer, eliminating the disease is possible...

A lot of us are embarrassed to talk openly about vaginas and vulvas, despite the fact that half the world has one and most of us came out of one. Change starts with all of us. So let's talk about it!
If you go into a pharmacy and ask for a vaginal moisturiser to help treat the itching caused by vaginal dryness, chances are someone else in the queue will want to high five you because they're going through the exact same thing.

2026-01-09 11:38:35 GMT

- reply

So. Vaginal dryness is very common, AND very treatable. So why is visibility so low? It all comes back to shame and stigma. We've said a lot in this thread about how vaginal dryness is common, but can't actually put a number on prevalence, because measuring requires honest reporting in surveys or speaking to a medical professional.

2026-01-09 11:26:25 GMT

Alternatively, vaginal oestrogen is available over the counter in the UK. This works a little differently to standard HRT as very little oestrogen enters the rest of the body. If you're on testosterone or worried about health effects of an HRT regimen, vaginal oestrogen could be right for you.

2026-01-09 11:23:38 GMT

- reply

Oestrogen-based HRT can effectively treat many cases of vaginal dryness. HRT that affects your whole body can be prescribed for menopause or after treatments which induce menopause, such as surgeries which remove the ovaries.

2026-01-09 11:20:41 GMT

- reply

Vaginal moisturisers are an effective treatment for many cases of vaginal dryness. These are available in most pharmacies. Please don't be putting face or body moisturiser up there, that stuff is completely different and will probably make things worse.

2026-01-09 11:18:26 GMT

- reply

Sometimes vaginal dryness related to sex can be treated as simply as by using lube (or getting a better boyfriend), or putting down the douchebag and letting your vagina work its self-cleaning magic.

2026-01-09 11:16:38 GMT

- reply

So vaginal dryness is incredibly common, because there's a lot of causes which include common life events, commonly-prescribed medications, and common underlying health conditions.
But great news! It's often very easy to treat!

2026-01-09 11:14:52 GMT

- reply

And finally, sometimes vaginal dryness is linked to external circumstances. You might be insufficiently aroused during sex. Washing your vagina with products such as scented soaps or douches can also cause vaginal dryness.

2026-01-09 11:12:43 GMT

- reply

Vaginal dryness is also linked to other medications which don't affect hormones. Some antidepressants and antihistamines can cause it, as well as many cancer treatments. Oh, and some health conditions are linked to vaginal dryness too - diabetes and Sjögren's syndrome are linked. And there's a genetic component, too - sometimes vaginal dryness is simply in your genes.

2026-01-09 11:09:39 GMT

- reply

Vaginal dryness is typically associated with menopause (it's especially common around menopause) but it can affect anyone. Sometimes vaginal dryness is linked to oestrogen levels. This means if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, taking testosterone HRT for gender care, or taking the hormonal contraceptives you might experience it.

2026-01-09 11:05:27 GMT

- reply

If you experience any of the above symptoms, do please speak to a medical professional. These symptoms can also be symptoms of other conditions as well as vaginal dryness. Also, none of these symptoms are things you just have to suck up and deal with, so get checked out!

2026-01-09 11:03:16 GMT

- reply

The term "vaginal dryness" can be a little misleading when recognising it. It makes it sound as if the symptom is always, well, a dry vag. But there's other symptoms too, and sometimes your vagina might not *feel* dry - you might notice unusual discharge.
The main symptoms of vaginal dryness are pain during sex involving your vagina and/or vulva; soreness and itchiness; unusual discharge; spotting; needing to pee more often; and repeat UTIs.

2026-01-09 10:59:49 GMT

It's #DryJanuary, so let's take a moment to talk about vaginal dryness. This vaginal health condition is *incredibly* common, but surrounded by shame. It's normal, and it's *very* treatable.

This winter, donations on our fundraising campaign will be doubled by a charitable foundation. The future will never be entirely certain under these conditions, but we know that with a community like you, we can continue punching above our weight! Please give what you can to see of 2025 on a fanny-tastic high note! https://www.gofundme.com/f/btscc2

We achieved the quim-possible, and that's thanks to you. In 2025, more than 30,000 have come through the doors to experience exhibitions, and half a million of you are hanging out with us online!

And of course, our gift shop remained, as always, a vital income stream in keeping our lights on and our doors open. This year, you were really into postcards of a woman terrifying the devil with her clunge, fiercely feminist t-shirts, and necklaces with rude words on them. https://vaginamuseumshop.co.uk/

In October, we launched a brand new patron programme, the Inner Circle. Our ambassadors, Lady Phyll and Amazin LeThi joined the family, along with plenty of new Cyber Clits, Uterati and Labia Leagues! https://www.vaginamuseum.co.uk/patron

During the fundraising campaign, we made new friends. BBH London provided a quim-credible billboard campaign around London. And our lovely neighbours, De Nadas, launched a rather fanny-tastic new delicious nibble to raise funds!

We used the only option available to us to secure the immediate future of the Vagina Museum: emergency crowdfunding.
And our amazing community showed us a *hole* lot of love. In 48 hours, thousands of you donated £60,000, smashing the target in record time!

But the road hasn't been smooth. In a perfect storm of arts funding in crisis, and a world growing increasingly hostile to women's rights, reproductive rights, and LGBT+ (especially trans) rights, the future looked bleak. In March, we faced almost certain closure. It was nearly (beef) curtains for us.

When we talk about community, we mean it. In 2025, we worked with more than 30 partner organisations. We use our space to bring marginalised voices to the fore, and to tell stories which need telling.

More than 2,000 of you attended a Vagina Museum event in 2025. We put on a great spread for you, ranging from crafts and activities, to our mini-programmes marking South Asian Heritage Month and Black History Month.

We opened three exhibitions, all of which are free to enter. We explored menopause through the ages, showcased community-led trans art and helped migrant women tell their stories of their first periods.

For our friends across the pond reading this, "fanny" means vagina and vulva in most of the rest of the English-speaking world. This information can save a life from a terrible social faux pas. Yet another tiny reason the world needs a Vagina Museum.

This winter, a kind charity is doubling your donations. For every £1 you give, they'll give £1. Your money helps keep the world's first (and only!) museum dedicated to vaginas, vulvas and the gynaecological anatomy doing the fanny-tastic things that you love! https://www.gofundme.com/f/btscc2
