Wahhabism be damned. I said patriarchy made me abhor masculinity, but more specifically, I mean white supremacist patriarchy I have experienced in my life. Not to say that patriarchy did not exist in pre-colonial cultures, but those forms of patriarchy are probably somewhat different from the form we have today that is based on white supremacy and has spread all over the world. When I think about it, though not in an orthodox way, Islamic masculinity is actually very different from our kind of patriarchy. White supremacist patriarchy want men to hide their emotions and to be tough and competitive. Where did they get that? Definitely not Jesus. In contrast, some male prophets in the Quran were very emotional and caring, like Prophet Muhammad cried a lot, and Jacob cried for Joseph until he went blind. Nor was Jesus anything like the white supremacist macho man.

Just a rant about my hatred of the mainstream. Yeah, I hate conformity. The only mainstream thing I love is cats. Other than that... converted to Islam in an Islamophobic society, a heterodox form of the faith that makes sense. Especially in this day and age, orthodox everything sucks -- especially that mainstream Judaism is Zionist yet most mainstream Islamic and Christian institutions do nothing for Palestine or worse are zio. Because orthodoxy is defined by the ruling class. But I'm still a religious person, as Islam made me not care about a lot of things the secular ruling class uses to fool us.
Orthodoxy or mainstream outside what's supposedly called "religion" also sucks. Say fascist mainstream media. Fuck mainstream social media owned by fascist Big Tech, yet why aren't more leftists using Fediverse? Please don't tell me to follow you on fucking IG! I rarely actually like music in the mainstream top charts. I don't care about mainstream fashion and still wear clothes that are more than 10 years old, though I wish that I look even more edgy. Fuck mainstream fashion when gender conforming clothes for women are too often impractical and uncomfortable. I mean Western fashion, though I don't wear the hijab either. I have refused to get a car in car dependent LA and considered every bike ride a protest.
Sometimes I do something weird just for the sake of weirdness in and of itself and eschew something just because it's too mainstream, especially when it's an important part of the national identity. Why? Turns out that a lot of things are mainstream because they are pushed by the ruling class for social control. As Chomsky says, mainstream media is mainstream basically because it's ruling class thought control. If this is generalizable, then it makes sense why most mainstream things suck and I already knew that before I radicalized. Now Gaza revealed that mainstream Western politics are a fascist pile of crap. Then being neurodivergent is a superpower. It puzzles me why most people still buy into the mainstream things that suck, thus keeping them mainstream. Come on, wake up! Is social conformity really so important that you will burn down the planet for the sake of conformity?

The Islam and Anarchism reading group is hosted by Killjoy Reads, which does other book clubs on feminism as well. It's also associated with Queer Muslims of NYC. Now it's expanding beyond a book club into an institution which seems to be a space for knowledge outside fascist academia. I have a long term vision for an anarchistic space of knowledge production outside the state and capitalism. While Killjoy Institute is focused on the humanities, I wonder if I can collaborate by contributing and building connections with natural science and tech stuff since my background is in STEM. Yeah, I think many of us are fed up. Though I still think we need more organizing to get the general strike to be revolutionary, to build the new world. We still need to build the power to be willing to break laws and disobey business union leadership. Also, my workplace is very international. Most of us are international, including myself. Everyone is afraid right now, so many of my colleagues just avoid anything that could get them targeted to keep safe. Like avoiding politics. Some of them are too scared to fill out the bargaining survey or sign an internal union petition that is not directly related to Palestine or ICE. I dare not to go to public protests or even wear political shirts, so I focus on organizing under the radar which I think is more important than the publicity. My workplace is also too fragmented, by different realities in different departments, and by different ranks having different unions and some not having a union. Organizing isn't easy here. But yeah, I suppose when things get even worse, more of us might realize that there's no way to avoid a fight. Like California farm workers did a willdcat strike not approved by the UFW due to ICE raids.

@nprofile…k62u I sure want one, but I'm not sure if we're ready for one, because I'm not sure how many people are willing to lose paychecks and break the law. It takes a long time to build the power to be ready to strike when bargaining in business unions and the power wanes after we get a new contract. Also union density is very low right now in the US. I'm pretty sure that business union leaders will try to undermine the general strike. Why do you think we're ready for a general strike?

The general strike won't work unless it's from below, not from the ruling class or from middle class activists. @nprofile…k62u These trucks are a huge menace to anyone outside cars and most people who drive them almost never use the bed. The hood is so high that the driver won't be able to see children in front of it. I wish that the workers organize so they can refuse to make these killer vehicles.

@nprofile…j2jh @nprofile…cu97 Yeah, I've also been thinking about that. Like why wait until now? Meanwhile, having been involved in American unions (not sure how different European ones would be), I know that strikes take a long time to organize because striking can impose a very steep cost to workers. It takes a lot of one-on-one conversations to build the social networks and collective power. And many people have radicalized in the past two years and radicalization takes some time. I'm really appalled how many of my colleagues don't seem to have radicalized very much. I myself shed quite a lot of liberal indoctrination since Oct 7 despite having identified as an anarchist since 2020.
Yeah, they'd better get ready to strike. Even if they fail this time, next time they may be able to call a strike faster. For example, UC grad student workers passed the strike authorization vote for Palestine in spring 2024 so quickly because the memory of the 2022 strike was still fresh, though a court ruled that the strike for Palestine is illegal and I heard reports of union leadership watering down the demands.
