Part of me finds this sort of thing a mite insulting. What's more likely: that in two and a half thousand years mathematicians have not worked out the kinks in mathematics this basic, or that you don't understand what you're talking about?
But I share that fascination too, and I've spent quite a while trying to puzzle out why laypeople hold the odd mathematical beliefs they do. I think the general and usually profound ignorance that most people have of mathematics, born of having never been taught how to do mathematical reasoning (or even really that such a thing as "mathematical reasoning" exists), manifests in two ways here.
One is that people fill in the gaps by resorting to meaningless word games or rigidly adhering to fixed rules they don't understand, akin to a mathematical cargo cult (like @npub12gn…d572's teacher insisting that "an absolute value can never be a negative" instead of actually thinking about the statement she wrote down).
The second is that people seem to think, even unconsciously, that mathematics is fundamentally arbitrary; that the standards by which mathematicians evaluate their claims are just a matter of subjective opinion and thus ignorable when those standards and their intuition come into conflict, as they frequently do.
I suppose it's not surprising that neglecting to teach people that there is a real subject called mathematics results in people thinking that there is not a real such subject as mathematics, but again, you'd hope that people would have the humility to recognise that we do actually know better than them about our own subject.

What I want to know is when we're going to face up to the reality that we can't hold the 2026 ICM in Philadelphia. If you could get the thousands of mathematicians that are due to attend it to actually show up, the IMU would be imperilling the profession itself by gambling with all their lives. Academics have been specifically targeted by the Trump administration, so it's not a peripheral threat.

As far as I'm aware, the violence in Fortnite is bloodless and cartoonish enough that a six year old should be fine to see it.
What is not fine, for a child of any age imo, is the monetisation, which is predatory even by the standards of the AAA video game industry. A detailed examination may be found in Folding Ideas's video on the game (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dPHPNgIihR0), but the most instructive thing, I feel, is the fact that for several years now, "default skin" (or words to that effect) has been an insult among schoolchildren, referring to kids whose parents won't/can't pay for a customised appearance for them.
The effect of all this on your child is one thing, but on your end what it will amount to is paying a tax to Epic Games, potentially quite a large one and for a very long time. I personally feel that it would be more worthwhile to withdraw that amount of money from your bank account in bills and burn it: fire provides warmth and is imo quite pretty, which is pretty poor value for money but infinitely more than you'd receive by handing it over to Tim Sweeney.

So at some point I want to make a personal website for my academic career; who am I, where did I study, where do I work right now, what do I research, how do you get in touch with me, etc.
BUT I refuse to faff about any tools or platforms for making websites, or doing any fancy stuff whatsoever; I'm gonna code this website by hand out of HTML and CSS, and it will consist of nothing more than static text, images, links, and formatting. I refuse to "build it beautiful", blech.
This is all well and good, but I'm worried about HTTPS. My browser refuses to connect to any non-HTTPS website, and clearly I'm going to have to make it happen on my website, but unlike composing the site and getting it hosted, I have no idea what's involved in getting my website certified (as evident from the fact I don't even have the vocabulary to properly articulate what I'm talking about).
Can anyone enlighten me? Thanks. (Boosts appreciated.)
