im working on a decentralized software issues/pull requests thing that lives directly in git and works with all existing git hosts. it will work by running a command in your repo like
git todo web
which will open a local web server that serves a github/gitlab issues-like interface for you to use. you can take out new issues, comments on existing issues, etc.
theres a way to do this that runs in the browser without javascript. i know this is important to a lot of people. this whole thing becomes *a lot easier* to make and make extensible if i can use javascript though. so, a poll:

I'll grant that computers today do things that are categorically more complex than anything previous generations attempted. I'll grant that so much of Chuck Moore's work was predicated on character sets, that would only encode Latin characters, and modern computing needing to deal with Unicode, non-latin text rendering, non-western dates and calendars, different kinds of networking etc etc yes I'll grant that that's all more complex. I don't find the increased complexity of computers depressing, I find the abandonment of the project of soundness depressing.
I thoroughly believe that we can do complex things in a sound way. computers randomly breaking is not a given. it just takes time and dedication and focus, things that that above all else I blame our economic system for being unable to provide.

and beyond just the triumph of capital over any alternative, it really breaks my heart that computers are just objectively worse today than they were in the time of Chuck Moore. I try and not be an old man yelling at the cloud about this but we've given up on stability, soundness, maintainability. these are non-goals of modern computing, sacrificed at the altar of shareholder value.
it is wild that an official update of the operating system could break otherwise working code in a way that is impossible to determine even what is happening, let alone what to do to fix it. but this is what we've come to expect. computers break all the time, software breaks all the time, stuff crashes, you restart, whatever. and this isn't even factoring in the incoming wave of vibe-coded systems which make no attempt at correctness.
this isn't what computing was, there were attempts -- serious attempts! -- at developing theory and practice to build systems that were stable and correct in the face of usage and updates. we put half a century into that. and now we live in a kind of collective surrender. it's really depressing. as someone who has dedicated a life to computing, it's really fucking depressing.

the indignity of putting these people through the tedium and stupidity of modern computing is also really jarring. these are people that imagined a different kind of computing, a kind of future that never got built, that got sidelined in favor of advertisements in the start menu, applications with in-app purchases, the global network as a mall, capital over computing.
and they've lived long enough to see it play out. Joe Armstrong talked about wrestling with grunt and gulp from the JavaScript ecosystem in one of his last talks. I've had the pleasure of working with Larry Cuba and most of our difficulties have been wrangling python package management on Windows. and now Chuck Moore gets his life work sniped to death by a random Windows update.
modern computers are a mess of accidental complexity and these are people that represented something different, living long enough to watch something worse become mainstream.

not to pontificate too much but: the ethos that people should be empowered to solve their own problems together by freely associating into short- or long-lived collaborations is the foundation of free software. it also works. modern computing does not happen without self-directed volunteers working together to make it happen. we have 30+ years of evidence at this point.
the roc package was broken in the AUR. i didn't need anyone's permission to fix it. the original maintainer made me co-maintainer. i merged my changes into the original package. i do not know this person, we'll probably never meet, but we collaborated and Arch Linux is better for it. computing is kept afloat by a million interactions like this.
and like... this is anarchism. if anyone asks or is confused as to what it is, this is it. with 200+ years of theory about how to think about it and manage problems and scale etc but this is The Thing as far as i can tell. people solving problems together without coercion or central coordination.
committed anarchists make the leap of observing the effectiveness and morality of this kind of organizing and ask how to scale it to other aspects of society, to all aspects. and there are answers to those questions. but it feels like a big deal to me that modern computing in large part is made possible by a kind of informal anarchist organizing.
a persistent frustration of mine is free software people struggling to make the bridge between the two, and i blame anti-left american propaganda and a limited western educational systems...

sourcehut comes *very* close to offering something like this but they remain bizarrely committed to the rejection of the presence of any HTML in any email they receive, even if there is plain text available.
I really don't understand this positionality they take. I can wrap my head around rejecting email that exclusively has HTML content, but rejecting emails that *have plain text variants* in favor of... asking people to reconfigure their email clients as a prerequisite for using sourcehut is just... like I said, bizarre. I feel like I'm missing something.

I seriously dislike the email-based git workflow and vastly prefer pull requests between publicly visible git repositories, possibly hosted on different platforms.
the remaining issue (no pun intended) is how to track issues and pull requests. issue tracking on GitHub, GitLab, Gitea etc all require accounts on the server to interact with the repository, which hobbles the distributed nature of git. I've occasionally thought about a kind of ActivityPub based issue tracker which would be a major improvement but still require an account somewhere on the fediverse.
thinking through it this afternoon I'm starting to wonder if an email-based *issue tracker* is maybe the way to go. preserving the distributed nature of git, but using email as a ubiquitous decentralized(ish) messaging platform just for conversation and coordination, not to throw patches around. that could be interesting and could work?

re: pedagogy I really worry about equipping new programmers with semantics that are effectively dead ends. what I'm getting to in my rant is that I'm thinking of a coroutine first approach to teaching interactive software which has the benefits of looking exactly like "normal programming" with local variables and function calls and the like but running across time and frames and being able to react to input fluidly. this feels to me like something you can actually iteratively build your skills on, as opposed to something that will run you into a wall and force you to pivot into something fairly different.

so students and experienced people are in a kind of draw the rest of the owl situation, almost immediately. so what do they do? a kind of smattering of things, none too good honestly.
"global" variables are an easy way to get state across frames, but without any principled notion of a state machine that kind of code will tend towards a random smattering of boolean flags and numbers that are written to and read from ad hoc at random places in the program. each of these solves an immediate problem contributes to a broader closing of doors down the line and painting you into a corner.
I put "global" in quotes because this also applies to things like public mutable members on unity components and things that are technically not global but *effectively* global, in that the search space when things go wrong with them tends towards the whole program.

somewhat related to the p5.js discourse that's been going around I've been thinking about update loops and how limiting they are when people building interactive software/creative code are almost invariably actually building state machines.
frameworks like processing, p5, openframeworks, even engines like unity basically bottom out on the idea that you are going to write a function that is going to be called once a frame. that's what separates interactive software from event driven software like servers and batch processing software like command line utilities. the thing runs independent of user action, driven by the passage of time itself.
so at the ground level this makes sense, a frame locked update loop is unavoidable. but with nothing else all you can really do with that is build *functions of time*. this is fine for simple animations, the kind of stuff you see in into processing materials, and by reading from input each frame you can do a little more than that, but you still don't really have a story for *state* that outlives the frame.
how do you make different levels? menus? change the gameplay after certain events happen? more importantly, how do you build any of those things in a way that allows you *to continue to iterate* as the project grows and you get new ideas?
these are all state machines, and an update loop alone is not enough to express them. and update loops are all you get in most frameworks.

when talking about coops i sometimes get asked "but what if someone takes advantage of the system?" almost like a checkmate...
the simple response is that there are mechanisms to deal with abuse and bad actors. but also: this issue isnt unique to cooperatives. what do we do we do if someone takes advantage *right now* of the system we already have?
we reward it. we call them a "boss" and allocate them more resources than others. we give them a better life, multiple homes, better education for their children. we give them more medical care and make sure they live as long as possible. we put them on the cover of magazines and make movies about their lives. we raise kids to hold them up as heroes and aspire to be like them. we make them into "presidents" and "kings" and give them unlimited power to hurt maim and kill. we fucking reward it.
coops and anti-hierarchical organizing are not oblivious to abuse, theyre designed pretty explicitly to counteract it and work towards true egalitarianism. and what we have now *explicitly celebrates and rewards sociopathy* so anyone genuinely concerned about this should be a fucking anarchist.

thinking about syntax for live coding performances again. i think it should fundamentally be a lisp, but i have yet to find a lisp editor that i feel fluent and fast in. the various paredits i have used are fine but not for the high stress, high velocity coding that happens on stage, at least for me. if anything the shift+9 combo to open parentheses is quite clumsy.
heres a sketch of a syntax that is basically a lisp with significant newlines whitespace and semicolons for expression grouping, still allowing for parentheses of course. is this just ML?

It has turned out that the world just does not suffer significantly from the kind of problem that our research was originally intended to solve.
this is pretty titanic and sums up so much of what is wrong with software and computer science: just because a problem is theoretically interesting and/or rigorous and/or fun to work on *has no bearing whatsoever* on its usefulness in the real world. none. theyre unrelated. sometimes they overlap, cool, but they are not correlated.
you have to do a kind of analysis that engineers are not equipped to do. its a kind of design research that involves understanding your intended audience and their challenges. its deeply human and subjective and i was only exposed to it when working towards my MFA.
something about one of the titans of thought of computer science working for decades only to realize his formal systems -- while intellectually thorough and interesting! -- didnt solve anyone's problems. he just assumed they would. but he never asked. something about that to me feels like The Whole Story.

my broader critique is that foss is undone by its neutral position towards capitalism. I completely disagree with the assessment that google uses its monopoly because it is an "evil company" -- they use their monopoly because it is the rational course of action under this economic system. this kind of abuse is inevitable as long as capitalism is left intact, so by not being anti-capitalist contemporary foss actually has no broader liberatory potential.

https://gaza.memorial/ has over 500 recordings now, which is an incredible show of support from people, but a drop in the bucket compared to the 6700+ in the database, which itself is a drop in the bucket compared to the estimated 40k+ martyred by the bombings, which itself is a drop in the bucket compared to the estimated 180k+ total death toll.
such an unthinkable tragedy and we're told every day by respectable people in the west that this is good and moral and just....

i dont want to make "apps" ever. like ever. i do not want to pay $99 a year and purchase locked down hardware to make experiences for a limited audience and beg the permission of a corporation to disseminate my work and not just delete it at their leisure. this is literally the opposite of why i got into computing. not what i signed up for.
