Indonesia is on edge, as the people are protesting all across the country against excessive parliamentary pay amidst weakening economy, lost jobs, and rising cost of living.
In the middle of all this, super app Grab has become an unexpected lifeline for many of its drivers and couriers after Malaysians discovered that they could flip their app location to Indonesia, order and pay for the food, and just tell the driver to keep them. It’s a feature meant for convenience when people travel, but in this moment it became something else, a way to get money directly into the hands of drivers in the middle of unrest.
And it matters. Grab lost two of its own drivers during these riots, one in Makassar and one in Jakarta. The platform may have intended this as a convenience tool, but right now it’s a lifeline, turning into an unexpected facilitator of aid when people need it most.
What makes it even more powerful is where it’s happening. Malaysians doing this over their Independence Day weekend, quietly sending support across the border. These are two nations that bicker endlessly about heritage, culture, football, you name it, but when crisis hits, their instinct to help kicks in.
Because at the end of the day, this isn’t about food delivery or app features. It’s about how, when everything else is breaking down, people will still find ways to take care of each other even if it means turning a ride-hailing app into a relief channel.

Indonesian police armored brigade ran over and killed a 21 year old ride hailing driver who was an innocent bystander, amidst anti government protests last night and the protest that was scheduled for today but canceled for safety reasons was back on.
Crazy twist, police investigators supposedly detained seven members of the unit who were in that vehicle. But netizens started suspecting that those individuals may not be who the cops claim to be. At least one was identified as a criminal already in jail, not a police officer. Not to mention their stories not adding up to the various footage of the hit and run.

Mass protests across 14 Indonesian cities rejecting the newly passed military legislation allowing active members to hold civilian government and private sector positions. Mass violence by cops and the military against protesters, illegal seizure of ambulance by the police, members of parliament clashing with protesters, and Jakarta is about to unleash its latest wave of protests tomorrow outside of the parliament building.

Malaysians are blowing up about this iPhone 16 Pro ad because the word sinema is non standard in Malay and the use here in “Karya sinema” is grammatically incorrect — the correct form would be “Karya sinematik”.
In the replies they’re lamenting the loss of the Malay language identity and some are comparing it to Indonesian or saying it’s becoming Indonesian. I noted in the reply that while it’s also non standard grammar in Indonesian, this is common practice.
Folks, this is advertising. Grammar rules often go out the window to catch people’s attention and to create some sort of brand or messaging association. Based on the replies, Apple succeeded in getting people to talk about it. The fact that it got posted on social media means it’s reaching beyond its intended audience. It worked! 😂😂

It’s a popular meme in Indonesia to point to neighbors like Malaysia and Singapore and say that things might have been better had it been the British who colonized the country because the Dutch were resource extractors, seeded racial and class divisions, sowed conflicts for their benefit, and conducted genocide, but the British also did the same in many of its colonized lands—India and Pakistan anyone?—who’s to say they wouldn’t have done the same in these lands?
Colonialism, regardless of its form, leaves behind a legacy of division and extraction. Ultimately how a post colonial nation progresses depends on its own people. The past may have shaped the nation but it doesn’t have to define its future.

In the 1950s, Indonesia had to pay billions of guilders to the Netherlands just to secure full sovereignty, about 4.5 billion.

As a kid, the history lesson at school and what I read about World War 2 made for a confusing history because we saw Japan as the enemy which was defeated by the Allied Forces led by the United States, but the Allies were also the enemy because they tried to help the Dutch reclaim the colony and forced Indonesia to pay for independence. A payment so large for a new nation that it wasn’t fully paid until 2002.
The battle cry of Indonesia during the revolutionary war 1945-1949 was, “Inggris kita linggis, Amerika kita setrika”, which means, “We crowbar the English and iron the Americans”, because they sided with the Dutch.
The defeat of Japan, which was (questionably) promising independence to Indonesia despite enslaving the people during their occupation, gave the independence movement the opportunity to declare it for themselves without Japan’s assistance in August 1945, days after the atomic bombs dropped.
However, the Dutch forces returned with the Allies and launched their “police operation” to reclaim the colony as Dutch territory. We weren’t taught much of what happened in Europe so as kids we were mostly in the dark about the Nazis. The main stage of World War II was essentially a footnote in Indonesian school history books of the 80s and 90s as far as I recall. I learned about it from the movies and documentaries.
The US and the UK had promised the Dutch they’d have their pre war territories back until they realized it wasn’t going to happen with all the resistance, so all the parties sat down at The Hague in 1949 to hash out a power transfer, after multiple prior efforts failed. This time it worked and the United States of Indonesia was recognized by the end of the year. The name obviously didn’t stick and the make up of the country was changing for over a decade.

While this isn’t something we learned in school, this was easily discovered or read about online since. On top of that, this became more widely reported in the last two decades as Indonesia increased efforts for Dutch reparations while delicately navigating the 70+ years of friendly diplomatic relations.
I’ve had debates with people about Dutch responsibilities over this former colony here but nobody has or will ever sway my stance that the Netherlands must pay full reparations over their colonization and the atrocities committed during that time.

The refusal by The Netherlands and other countries and organizations to recognize 17 August 1945 as the Independence Day of Indonesia in favor of 27 December 1949 when the official transfer of power took place after the Round Table Conference at The Hague months prior, is the same as if the UK refuse to acknowledge July 4, 1776 as the American Independence Day because the revolutionary war was still happening until 1783, and will only recognize September 3, 1783 because that’s the date of the Treaty of Paris.
