My opponent’s hypocrisy on full display: complains about dishonest attack ads, while perpetrating them. Complains about dark money, while benefiting from it. Claims to want open dialogue, while ducking a debate.

September 10 marks the date in America we remember that we settle our deepest disagreements through peaceful dialogue & debate, never through violence. The Toledo Blade Editorial Board has often criticized my positions through this campaign, but I respect them for standing up for the principle of open debate:
Editorial: Acton debate decision damaging
THE BLADE EDITORIAL BOARD
An accepted political wisdom and expected candidate conduct has been “If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen,” since President Harry S. Truman uttered the phrase during turbulent times in office.
Amy Acton, Democratic nominee for Ohio governor, falls far short of that standard in refusing two debate opportunities against Republican nominee Vivek Ramaswamy, which raises legitimate questions about her political acumen and leadership ability.
The Acton campaign says “Dr. Acton’s focus is on talking with Ohioans, not platforming a scam artist who spreads baseless lies about her and her family.”
Unless Dr. Acton is exceptionally weak, turning down a national debate platform on CNN and a statewide broadcast debate originating in Cincinnati make no political sense.
The Ramaswamy campaign has a massive money advantage. If advertising dominates, Mr. Ramaswamy will be able to steer the issues to his benefit.
A widely seen debate is an equalizer that would negate much of Mr. Ramaswamy’s monetary advantage. It’s an opportunity for the Acton campaign that is only provided because the race is uncommonly close.
If Mr. Ramaswamy is spreading “baseless lies,” Dr. Acton is foolish not to accept the opportunity to turn those claims against him. Moreover, Mr. Ramaswamy is vulnerable on policy proposals covering taxes, spending, consolidation of universities, and grandiose population projections.
But, Mr. Ramaswamy has the heart to lead, the courage to be in the arena that Dr. Acton is missing. It amplifies and validates GOP claims that Dr. Acton is a “quitter” who left the Ohio Department of Health when the coronavirus policies she advocated became controversial.
It may well be that Toledo’s long serving Congressman Marcy Kaptur provided the example Dr. Acton is copying. In 2024, Ms. Kaptur refused to debate Republican Derek Merrin in a forum proposed by The Blade and Buckeye Broadband, also claiming to be the victim of “lies” in campaign commercials.
We found that to be a highly disappointing blemish on Representative Kaptur’s record, but it is far less serious shortcoming for one member of a 435 person legislative body than it is for the chief executive of a massive state like Ohio.
Ohio’s next governor will well understand the sign on President Truman’s desk, “the buck stops here.” Some very tough decisions await whoever voters make governor.
Dr. Acton raises serious doubt about her ability to not only handle the pressure of those big decisions but also to use the bully pulpit of her office to build public support for her proposals.
If Amy Acton doesn’t have the skill set to handle a debate, she should never have run for governor of Ohio.

Lowering healthcare costs is a top priority for me & the lowest-hanging fruit is crystal clear: crush Medicaid fraud. I’ll strike a deal with the federal government that allows Ohio to keep billions in savings & bring down healthcare costs for law-abiding citizens across our state.

The CFPB is NOT funded by Congress but by the Federal Reserve, an intentional gambit by Democrats that allows CFPB to evade Congressional oversight. But that’s a double-edged sword: if it isn’t funded by Congress, that means a President doesn’t need Congress to defund it either.

The reason top tech companies often hire foreign-born & first-generation engineers over “native” Americans isn’t because of an innate American IQ deficit (a lazy & wrong explanation). A key part of it comes down to the c-word: culture. Tough questions demand tough answers & if we’re really serious about fixing the problem, we have to confront the TRUTH:
Our American culture has venerated mediocrity over excellence for way too long (at least since the 90s and likely longer). That doesn’t start in college, it starts YOUNG.
A culture that celebrates the prom queen over the math olympiad champ, or the jock over the valedictorian, will not produce the best engineers.
A culture that venerates Cory from “Boy Meets World,” or Zach & Slater over Screech in “Saved by the Bell,” or ‘Stefan’ over Steve Urkel in “Family Matters,” will not produce the best engineers.
(Fact: I know *multiple* sets of immigrant parents in the 90s who actively limited how much their kids could watch those TV shows precisely because they promoted mediocrity…and their kids went on to become wildly successful STEM graduates).
More movies like Whiplash, fewer reruns of “Friends.” More math tutoring, fewer sleepovers. More weekend science competitions, fewer Saturday morning cartoons. More books, less TV. More creating, less “chillin.” More extracurriculars, less “hanging out at the mall.”
Most normal American parents look skeptically at “those kinds of parents.” More normal American kids view such “those kinds of kids” with scorn. If you grow up aspiring to normalcy, normalcy is what you will achieve.
Now close your eyes & visualize which families you knew in the 90s (or even now) who raise their kids according to one model versus the other. Be brutally honest.
“Normalcy” doesn’t cut it in a hyper-competitive global market for technical talent. And if we pretend like it does, we’ll have our asses handed to us by China.
This can be our Sputnik moment. We’ve awaken from slumber before & we can do it again. Trump’s election hopefully marks the beginning of a new golden era in America, but only if our culture fully wakes up. A culture that once again prioritizes achievement over normalcy; excellence over mediocrity; nerdiness over conformity; hard work over laziness.
That’s the work we have cut out for us, rather than wallowing in victimhood & just wishing (or legislating) alternative hiring practices into existence. I’m confident we can do it. 🇺🇸 🇺🇸

Federal agencies have cute 3-letter acronyms, but turns out they also have mascots. National Weather Service (“Owlie Skywarn”). Natural Resources Conservation Service (“Sammy Soil”). Food & Nutrition Services (“Power Panther”). They give away drink koozies, keychains, etc. In 2016, federal agencies spent ~$1.5 *billion* on advertising, public relations campaigns, & public affairs staff. DOGE doesn’t have a mascot, but if we did, it’d be a chainsaw - for cutting costs.
