I ask my students to contribute to the opensource project of their choice.
I just did a quick grep through the 238 projects I have in my archives.
Of 238, 7 don’t mention "github.com".
On close inspection, 6 of them are because the student forgot to putt the URL of the project repo.
So, on 238 students, only one managed to contribute to a project which is not hosted on Github.
It is even worse than I thought.

: my philosophy is now to answer by email all the requested information. I let organizers dispatching those information. I don’t join any groupchat, I rarely fill any forms. If requested, I say "here are the information".
I’m of course not rigid (it makes sense if the ask speakers to vote or if they ask writers to fill their signing availability schedule)
But, surprinzingly, replying only by email and being straight to the point earned me a lot of respect by organizers.

Le Pixel 8 que j’ai commandé chez @npub1hn8…g0mt a un énorme problème : il perd la 4G 80% du temps. Plus de data même avec du très bon réseau. Le reboot ne fixe le bug qu’une fois sur 10. C’est inutilisable.
Truc incompréhensible : Whatsapp continue à fonctionner, même sans data !
Pas de réponse du support jusqu’à présent.

Librewolf is exactly what Firefox should be.

Trying to figure out why my :debian: sid silenced the mic. It looks like a pipewire/wireplumber issue. If I switch my profile from "stereo input + stereo output" to "proaudio" in pavucontrol then set the default input to "pro 6" (see screenshots), internal mic is working. (but plugged-in not).
Any idea to identify the issue in order to report the bug against the faulty package (that’s why I use Sid in the first place)?
My brain is stuck in Alsa/ESD era ;-)

Et bien j’étais aujourd’hui sur un plateau télé où la nouvelle a été annoncée par une journaliste.
Le crime a été annoncé comme étant "incompréhensible".
Une fois hors-antenne, la discussion s’est poursuivie sur ce sujet et j’ai tenté d’expliquer ce que je savais à ce sujet, que ce n’était pas incompréhensible du tout.

Vous avez peut-être vu que le CEO d’une compagnie d’assurance santé aux USA a été assassiné.
Dans mes réseaux, tout le monde poste des blagues à ce sujet car ce CEO était une ordure et sa société refusait de rembourser la plupart des frais, jusqu’au médicament pour calmer les nausées des enfants sous chimio. La blague est que chaque personne ayant eu un jour affaire à cette société à un motif valable pour être l’assassin.

Mastodon is decentralized developed by volunteers and a handful of people paid by donations. The goal is, like the web, to create a common infrastructure (the Fediverse) that will have no leader and will outlive all of us (like the Web).
Bluesky promises to be decentralized (some day) but is not and is funded by VC. The goal is to make them do a good return on their money sooner or later.
Think about it next time you read something like "feature X is a bit better on Bluesky"

The best way to help those who are or will be under a dangerous political regime is to normalize the tools that protect them.
If you use Whatsapp, try to replace as many conversations as you can with Signal.
If you use Gmail or Outlook, switch to an independent privacy preserving provider, at least for your personal emails.
If you use Chrome, switch to Firefox.
By making those tools "normal", you are making them look less suspicious.
If you don’t do it for yourself, do it for others.

Vu la critique de @npub1hmx…26mp qui considère que #Bikepunk est quand même très fort un texte militant anti-bagnole, je pense que j’aurais du conserver l’avertissement « Certaines scènes risquent de choquer les automobilistes les plus endurcis »

I simply open the RSS feed with #offpunk to see the latest posts.

Stop putting QR code on your posters in the city.
I don’t have my phone with me.
When I have it, I don’t want to open it.
When it is open, I don’t want to scan random stuff.
Just put the information on the posters. The date, the place, the price. Write them !
Add an URL to your website. One I could memorize, note down or even recognize later.
And no instagram/facebook. I want the information, not "follow".
You are not cool, you are simply losing a huge part of your potential audience.

En Belgique, on vote puis tous les partis prétendent avoir gagné. Pendant des mois, ça discute de coalitions pour former un gouvernement. Parfois même avant les prochaines élections.

It’s been years since I deleted all my social accounts beside Mastodon. And decades of using only Linux.
I’m reading in the news that Windows is crashing or forcing ads onto users. That Twitter became X and is a shit show. That millions of Meta accounts have once again been hacked. That people using web service FOO feels cheated since it was bought by BAR.
And it feels like reading about an earthquake in a distant country. Must be terrible for those poor people.

I need help with #git
A contributor to #offpunk is trying to send me a beautiful patch but it always fails when applied with "git am". I don’t understand why it fails. Everything is perfect.
If the contributor remove the failing part from the patch, the patch fails in another part. (as witnessed with --reject)
I’m completely loss here.
I really need help. Reboost from git or #sourcehut users are appreciated.

For more than 20 years, I’ve downloaded files using wget because I could never remember curl options.
It turns out that I was not alone.
@npub19x9…r67d created a simple wrapper around curl called "wcurl". This is brilliant! And, yes, the name is very intuitive. Best of all, it is already in Debian (and on my system) but it should really be part of the official curl distribution (ping @npub1cm0…enqe )

Now, thanks to ChatGPT, you could improve this workflow by:
- making step 3, the only easy step, somewhat easier (and thus hiring less competent engineers)
- making step 5 nearly Impossible.
