I heard Adrian Weckler talking about this earlier in the week and can't get around the fact they think it's a bad thing. EVs are getting cheaper and cheaper, and the rapid change in price means people are disincentivised from upgrading their car every two years. These are two massive positives for anyone concerned about the environmental cost of car-dependency.
EVs are now more affordable than they've ever been and the people buying them will be keeping them for longer.

I got the new S2 bus this morning from Rathmines to Heuston Station and it's really great to finally have a frequent, reliable and direct public transport link to the station but the route does an odd thing after you come through St James' Hospital. At the top of Steeven's Lane, when you're already in sight of the station it heads all the way in to Bridge Street and then back out the quays.
Surely there's a way to allow it to use the Luas route straight down Steeven's Lane?

Otherwise all you achieve is people moving from other sustainable modes (walking and cycling) to public transport with very little impact on car use.

The council have never shared the details of the deal with the developer and which was done entirely behind close doors and never, to my knowledge, discussed in any detail at council meetings. Local councillors certainly seemed to be in the dark as to what exactly was agreed, as reported by @npub1y57…zjag at the time.
A design for the space was produced 18 months ago and went to public consultation, but there has been no sign of any further progress since then.

Remember that time Dublin City Council handed over most of the public space at Portobello Harbour for two years to facilitate a private commercial development?
And remember Owen Keegan assured us this was fine because he had done a deal with the developer and they would fund the redesign and redevelopment of the public space?
Well, the hoarding finally came down this week and the space has been returned to the public, with half of the granite paving replaced by tarmac and no redesign.

I've just listened back to the piece on Newstalk. I wouldn't recommend it.
Pat Kenny used the example of someone trying to get from Lucan to go to the Abbey Theatre. They both agreed that this was impossible except by car and that the new restrictions on private cars would make that impossible too.
No mention of the brand new #BusConnects bus plaza at Liffey Valley and the new C-Spine bus which will get you there quicker than driving.

I hear Conor Faughnan was on radio again this morning criticising the reduction in default speed limits across the country.
I'll say one thing for him, he is consistent. Here he is in 2016 saying much the same thing.

My commute to work is a short bike ride - about 10 minutes on a good day. And on that short journey everyday I witness multiple breaches of Road Traffic laws. This morning's list:
- parking in a bus lane
- pulling out without indicating
- driving in a bus lane
- breaking a red light
- using a mobile phone while driving
- driving without lights
- driving with defective lights
One garda on a bike could keep himself very busy cycling around Dublin's streets in the morning.

It's over five years since the Caiseal Mara Hotel in Moville was fire-bombed, and arson attacks have been taking place with increasing regularity since then (apart from a brief lockdown respite).

And there we have it, a Fianna Fáil councillor from Rosscahill on Morning Ireland telling us that "Ireland is full" and that we can't house 70 "young males" in a disused hotel.
He very proudly insisted that all the people involved in Friday's blockade were local people i.e. that it hadn't been infiltrated by far right agitators (as if this was something to be proud of) but was adamant that no locals were involved in the arson attack on the hotel on Saturday.

This would mean charging everyone for the use of the M50 relative to the length of road they are travelling. It might even make it cheaper for those doing a full circuit (but adding cost to those travelling just a short distance).

As a Policy Council delegate who voted at the February Policy Council meeting to extend the moratorium, it was my clear understanding that supporting the SF motion was entirely in line with party policy. The only difference between the SF motion and the party policy was the length of the extension (9mths v 6mths)
My view on that hasn't changed

@npub133l…6u3s @npub1zwn…vjs7 That's not true, Karl. The majority of Green Party councillors on Dublin City Council voted for the SF motion to extend the eviction ban. Only two voted against, for reasons best known to themselves.
The situation in govt is different, the PP has a mandate to deliver the PfG. They can and do push for more, and have got the coalition partners to go further than the PfG on some issues despite being the smallest partner in govt, but on other issues there has to be compromise.

Jack Chambers TD speaking at #ITRN2023 at #ATUSligo says "we owe it to the people who have lost lives to take action this year". He mentions the speed limit review and the "worrying trend in driver behaviour post-Covid" which needs to be addressed.
He also notes that 1 in 3 driver fatalities have a substance in their system (by which I understand to mean drink and/or drugs).

@npub1f9m…cn3m I haven't posted, liked or retweeted anything on Twitter since November last year but I've kept my account, mainly because I don't want my Twitter handle to fall into other hands.
Initially, I had hoped that there might be a post-Musk future for Twitter and that I might return but that seems increasingly unlikely.
I don't think having an inactive account bolsters the platform in any significant way. Active Users is the key metric that investors and advertisers will look to.

This is a good piece on the demise of #Twitter but when it starts to talk about alternatives it repeats the trope about Mastodon being difficult to use:
"Less tech-savvy folks may find it hard to adapt to the interface, leaving it struggling to reach critical mass."
I haven't used any of the other alternatives (BlueSky, Threads, T2) so I can't compare but is Mastodon really that hard to use or has this just become a lazy tag?

I'm sitting there having my lunch on the lovely newly landscaped Francis Street when this guy pulls up in his van onto the paved area right in front of me, sticks on his hazards, leaves the engine running and takes out his phone to make a call.
Perfectly normal behaviour. I'm sure the council are delighted the money they spent on the public realm enhancement isn't going to waste.

It's like saying that architectural drawings created by Computer Aided Design are not copyrightable. AI is just a tool and there are already some artists who are using it to great effect. Check out the work of @npub1weg…85wd for example.

@npub1djv…74n2 it never occurred to me to search the Irish Military Archives in my own genealogical research until now but I've found some very interesting, and quite distressing correspondence from my grand uncle John J. O'Sullivan who was an IRA volunteer in Kerry 3rd Brigade during the War of Independence and the Civil War. He was badly burned while his company were setting fire to the RIC Barracks in Sneem and suffered life long injuries requiring continuing medical attention.
