It's a classroom setting where we get between 20-30 examinees sitting for state exams, in an old building with poor ventilation. When our manager faced the new computer-based system, she immediately asked 'what if it crashes?', and she assembled a box labelled "crash kit" for us. There are blank paper forms to fill out for membership sales, the info to be entered later when the tech is back online. We can accept cash and issue paper receipts, or use the portable charge, payments to be processed later. There are paper temporary member cards, and tally sheets to keep count of member attendance. In the several years since then, we have only needed the crash kit a couple of times, both times for only a part of the day while techies scrambled in to fix the issue. But when it's suddenly needed, it's good to know the backup plan is in that box, all ready to just grab and use. Every business should have something similar in the way of a tech crash plan, and make sure everyone knows where it is, and knows that they should just go ahead and use it. npub18d7dkj5jvk0z96dza7k3ddpmm4ydcfj580muywkrurxsstg2dc8syjc47s Common Sparrow @nprofile…xwug Love this! I didn't realize until I read this book that honeybees and bumblebees are a very small subset of all the varieties of bees in the world. There are over 20,000 species of bees. Only 9 of those are honeybees, and only about 250 are bumblebees. The vast majority are known as solitary bees, and these made for new and fascinating reading. For instance, there are mining bees, which nest in holes drilled into the ground, waterproofing their tunnels with secretions from their body, to guard against flooding. There are mason bees who lay their eggs in discarded snail shells, sealing up the openings, and then flipping the shells open side down to guard against the seals being broken open. There are cuckoo bees, which lay their eggs in the nests of other bee species, in much the same way the avian cuckoo does in the nests of other birds. The book isn't only about bees, but also about the world in which the bees play a vital part. In between discussing bees, the author also writes about wasps and beetles, trees and gorse, and birds. No single piece of a natural system exists apart from all the rest. This book gives plenty of detail about the bees, while still placing them in the larger system. This classic has been recommended to me over and over by so many different readers, that I finally got around to reading it just a couple of years ago. I should have read it sooner. Yes, it's that good. This collection of essays was published after the death of the author Leopold. It is loosely structured, with essays falling together into several groups with their own topics. One section follows the author's restoration of some abandoned farmland in Wisconsin over the course of a year, with observations of the natural prairie country and the ecology of its life. Another section reflects back on the author's earlier days with the Forest Service, and his youth in prairies and forests of Canada and the U.S. Here he dwells especially on a life-changing encounter with a dying wolf which began his fresh thinking on what ecology of wilderness really ought to be. It was a group of more general philosophical essays, gripping and thought-provoking, which really got to the core of what ecology is about. The essay entitled "The Land Ethic" contains many of the central ideas about our relationship to the natural world. This quote sums it all up: “A thing is right when it tends to preserve the integrity, stability, and beauty of the biotic community. It is wrong when it tends otherwise.” Link to book: https://www.penguinrandomhouse.ca/books/100064/a-sand-county-almanac-by-aldo-leopold/9780345345059 #BookRecommendations #Nature #Environment npub18d7dkj5jvk0z96dza7k3ddpmm4ydcfj580muywkrurxsstg2dc8syjc47s Common Sparrow Don't look to the past. I spend a fair amount of time with a 5-year old. So I like to include the little ones in my book recommendations now and then. Both of these books are good ways to introduce ecological themes to children. "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" is a simple picture book, telling how a caterpillar ate and ate, spun itself into a cocoon, and emerged as a butterfly. The pictures are colorful, the text is brief, good for preschoolers. There are holes punched in the pages of the book, where the caterpillar "ate" through the paper. Some of the things eaten are silly, but the overall arc of the plot is the life cycle of the caterpillar/butterfly, which is true enough to reality to serve as a great introduction to the topic. "The Lorax" is for slightly older children, able to sit through a longer story and follow a plot. The Lorax is the character who "speaks for the trees". He scolds the Once-ler, who cuts down the Truffula Trees to manufacture "thneeds". Eventually all the trees are cut down, driving away the animals who must look for other homes. In the end, the Once-ler learns and repents, and gives a boy a truffula seed to replant. I mentioned this book here awhile ago, in connection with one of the daily haiku prompts, but today it's time to give it a direct recommendation. It's about the earliest history of spinning and weaving in the Bronze Age, and the role women played in developing these arts, and the role these arts played in the lives of women. Spinning was the basis of all textile production, and the most time-consuming. Without thread, there could be no weaving. Women had their spindles and distaffs always ready to hand, spinning in any odd moments as they went through their days, as they walked down the road, as they sat beside cooking pots, as they tended children, as they visited and socialized. No wonder spinning played such a part in cultural memory, from the three Fates spinning the thread of a human life, to Ariadne's ball of thread in the labyrinth, to fairy tales like Rumplestiltskin. Spinning and weaving were peculiarly female labors, because until industrialization, they could be performed at home while children ran about. Clothing was highly valued because it took so much labor to produce, yet because it wore out and vanished from the archaeological record, historians paid little attention to it, until modern interest in women's history highlighted its importance. The archive will ensure that the stories we tell about the Greater Rochester community—and the resources that allow us to tell those stories—better reflect all residents’ experiences and contributions. .." "...The library was approached by historical Black churches and organizations in the area seeking a place to keep their records, and we realized there was no place in our existing collections to house this material. These occurrences shed light on the gaps in our existing collections and exacerbated the already glaring truth that unfortunately, too few archival collections document the history of our community’s African American residents. ... It was also decided that the archive would be guided by the principle that the people whose stories are being documented should have the agency to decide for themselves how their history will be preserved and shared. ..." Childhood memories there. A sister who lived there as an adult. Love and respect for so much of what is Canadian. What this regime of facists has done to Canada hurts my heart. I feel like I just watched a despicable family member stab a dearly loved friend and neighbor in the back, and the shame falls on my whole family. I can't fault Canadians for wanting noting to do with any of us. Having some Canadians, like you, understand that you have some friends yet here in this awful place brings me to tears at your kindness after being treated so badly. Thank you. Please go on defying Trump. Every setback you inflict on him helps us in our own resistance. npub18d7dkj5jvk0z96dza7k3ddpmm4ydcfj580muywkrurxsstg2dc8syjc47s Common Sparrow One year ago today, my partner Brian died. He was one of that week's covid statistics. According to the weekly tracking of covid deaths, 1,515 Americans died in the same week as Brian. https://mindly.social/@[email protected] /111982182949584596 Every one of those deaths was a person whose loss hit somebody as hard as Brian's death hit me. Every one was more than just a statistic. Brian came into my life when I was nearly 50, when I wasn't expecting to meet a special someone. We had 15 wonderful years together. He had semi-retired, was working part-time. I was a bit younger, still working two jobs. We were talking about all the fun things we were going to do when we were both retired. We expected to have another good 10 to 15 years ahead of us. Avoided covid for four years. Vaccinated, boosted, wearing masks at work or when shopping. Both of my jobs are public facing jobs, so I was especially careful. But by 2024, everyone else was getting careless. Sick people coughing all over us, unmasked, were all around us. At one of our part-time jobs, where we both worked, was one such person. We both were finally caught by covid. I was flat on my back at home for a week. Brian was hospitalized in ICU, developed pneumonia, and died. Covid is still out there, folks. So is flu, and RSV, and other nasty things. If you are sick, stay home. If you must go out, (yes, there are medical appointments, and quick runs for food), then have the common sense to wear a mask out there. Do it for my Brian. #CovidIsNotOver npub18d7dkj5jvk0z96dza7k3ddpmm4ydcfj580muywkrurxsstg2dc8syjc47s Common Sparrow Between cement slabs, stubborn grassroots push through cracks. (1858) This book explores the intersection between black history and Native American history. At a time when Florida was still part of Spanish territory, people escaping the slave states of Georgia, Mississippi, and the Carolinas fled south. Florida was closer than the northern free states, and Spain had a policy of providing refuge to black fugitives from the slave states. In Florida, they found allies among the Seminole, who welcomed them in and gave them a home. They became caught up in the wars between the United States government and the Seminole. The "Seminole Wars" had a series of causes, including territorial expansion of the United States and plans to take Seminole land and remove the Seminole to reservations. But as the author Joshua Giddings, a prominent abolitionist, made clear in this book, the recovery of their "property", (black slaves), played a very large part in the continuance of these attacks. While Seminole were either killed or moved to reservations, black fugitives were returned to slavery. (Munchkin home with ear infection). But I wanted to participate, so I wrote to a bunch of elected officials to get my voice in amongst the others. A friend told me that her daughter-in-law, (just under 5 feet tall and very feisty), participated in a protest in Iowa, where she lives. She was pushed and knocked down by a policeman, but was not arrested with others, because she was limping, and they said they didn't want "liability" if she was in custody! My friend was extremely proud of her DIL. npub18d7dkj5jvk0z96dza7k3ddpmm4ydcfj580muywkrurxsstg2dc8syjc47s Common Sparrow In night's thick darkness, one pre-dawn bird call startles. I've been thinking about it lately, because its lessons seem more relevant than ever in our present situation. It's about the willingness of individuals to stand against the tide, to say, "Nope, not going along with this", when confronted with immoral or unethical demands. What impact can a single person have? How can one person stop an avalanche? This book shows us cases where someone wasn't paralyzed by that question, but did the obviously right thing anyway, under the pressure of surrounding group conformity. I wrote about this book in more detail at that time, in a book blog I was keeping then. I think I want to re-read it again now, and to recommend it to others. https://mariasbooks.wordpress.com/2013/03/19/beautiful-souls/ #Books #BookRecommendations #Courage npub18d7dkj5jvk0z96dza7k3ddpmm4ydcfj580muywkrurxsstg2dc8syjc47s Common Sparrow When the lights go out, we fumble through dark cupboards searching for candles. #DailyHaikuPrompt - Candle
