Could you let me know how long it takes a review to appear on Comaps? Its not immediate like Mangrove/MapComplete. Do you need to wait until the map is updated? I just assumed that reviews were pulled from Mangrove in real time.

And if you want to write a review, go to https://mangrove.reviews/. Its really simple (with the exception that your "password" is a private key).

I almost didn't believe this when I saw it: @npub1854…hexw now has REVIEWS!!!
The reviews are taken from https://Mangrove.reviews (@npub174d…8yjc).
All open source, and no Google. It's still a work in progress, but its a nice first step!

If you don't live in the US, you might have a hard time understanding this story. So here is a random photo from a Target in Los Angeles.

I'd like to thank @npub1kuv…ez3m for setting up an interview with me yesterday!
I didn't talk about research at all (yes, I still do research!), but rather discussed the open source tools that the non-profit [@planetary_research_cooperative](https://solarsystem.social/@planetary_research_cooperative ) are offering to the planetary science community, for free. If you are sick of big tech and big publishers, check out the recording on our peertube server!
Opinions may or may not reflect those of the Planetary Research Cooperative.

Just declined another review request for a journal that publishes closed-access content. It is very easy to say no. Just forward this letter to the editor:

And why do I say censorship only accounts for a few percent?
There is an open letter denouncing censorship that was advertised on the PEN newsletter (which has over 3000 subscribers). Only 80 people have signed the letter so far....

AGU attendance was down by 23%, which is consistent with these travel numbers. For LPSC, my guess is that things have just "gotten worse" as it is a couple months later than AGU. LPI is also censoring abstracts, but I suspect that this only accounts for a few percent of the drop.

Its hard to compute using the abstract metadata. But here is some info about Europeans traveling to the US.

And for Trump: 50% means "half" or "divide by two".

2026-01-27 10:21:58 GMT

The number of abstracts submitted to the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference (#LPSC) this year is down by almost 50% when compared to normal years.
It's hard to say what is the main cause, but big factors are Europeans who don't want to travel to the US, reductions of US research budgets, censorship of abstracts, and just your average hatred of Texas.

Plagiarism in academic journals (1/N)
I have encountered plagiarism more than I would have liked to. Most of the time, the text just stood out as being in a different style and a quick search on the internet would come up with the original source.

Here is the recording of our last #PlanetaryResearch #DiamondOA journal meeting. Most of the discussion was about our upcoming call for an editor-in-chief, editors, associate editors, and media team members.

Mural of the Croatian scientist Andrija Mohorovičić in the city of #Osijek where he once taught. He is best known for his discovery of the crust-mantle interface using seismic data from a 1909 earthquake. This interface is now known as the Moho, as no one can pronounce or properly spell his name.

Wikipedia page of the day: Kakistocracy
A kakistocracy is a government run by the worst, least qualified, or most unscrupulous citizens. The word is derived from two Greek words, kakistos and kratos, with a literal meaning of government by the worst people.

The #PlanetaryScience community is in the process of creating a new diamond open access journal (#DOAJ) that will be free for authors and free for readers.
We just had our first kickoff meeting yesterday, so if this is something that interests you, please check out the presentation and get involved!

The first order of business is to converge on a name for the journal....

Would you be in favor of scientific journals requiring an #AI #LLM statement at the end of the manuscript similar to the following?
"The authors affirm that no artificial intelligence tools were used in the writing (or as an aid in the writing) of this manuscript."

There are now a bunch of diamond open access journals in the geosciences. Before submitting to a traditional venue (evil or not), please check them out!

If you are going to this year's #EPSC2024 and you are looking for a new mastodon home, solarsystem.social is the place for you!
We accept signups from anyone that is working (even peripherally) in the planetary sciences.

Now that I have a new home on solarsystem.social, here's a new #introduction!
I am a #planetary scientist working at the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris (#IPGP) in France. My research uses the #gravity field, #topography, and #MagneticField of the planets to decipher their internal structure and geologic evolution. My favorite terrestrial body is the #Moon, but I also work with #Mercury, #Venus, and #Mars. Soon I will need to learn about #Psyche and the icy satellites of #Jupiter!
