From what I gather this is a client instructed demand. I.e set pow difficulty X to reply to this thread. I’m more so worried about the relays. Perhaps they can invoke a back off mechanism with PoW requirement - or just LN payments as suggested by others.

The problem is the definition of “someone”. It’s trivial to create new keypairs and spam from arbitrary IPs. From the perspective of the relay they seem like any new user.

How will Nostr relays avoid spam and DoS? Given the zero cost of spinning up keypairs it will be trivial to spam the network without some element of proof of work/trust or payment.
Wouldn’t be surprised if proof of trust ends up being an outcome of Nostr that radically changes the way we use the web.

TIL. Still learning but my guess is it’s a lot easier with merkle trees as you can verify that you have received all subsequent pieces and just present a forward going cursor. With nostr you wouldn’t know what you’ve missed in the past. Bloom filters might help. Ie the client sends a filter and the server pushes everything that is guaranteed to have been seen

The simplicity of nostr reminds me a lot of IRC. In some sense beyond the protocol even. Despite its comparable shortcomings, the IRC era was in some ways the most interesting period of the early internet. Turns out if you connect enough pseudonymous users around arbitrary topics of interest you get a lot of collaboration and innovation. I hope this is ushers a new wave of that.
