Hi! Name's Aster. I am an aspiring geologist, do stuff with PostMarketOS, and pretend I have any understanding of the Linux kernel. I also like Halo and Kingdom Hearts. Apparently I mainly work on porting iPhones to Linux now. Luddite. Bump into lamps by night. Will not boost without alt-text. Be compassionate when its hard, don't censor yourself, and wear a mask!!!! I take follow requests and basically the only thing you need is a PFP and a bio. #NoBridge #Linux #PostMarketOS

Last Notes npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: @nprofile…8d0p You're right. I'm sorry that I assumed that was a jab at some projects I work with. Usually people use that as the first thing they critique us for and there's been an uptick of that recently. Seeing a major project use that argument rubbed me the wrong way. npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: @nprofile…8d0p I can see where they are coming from, but the way they presented it isn't very constructive. But, I also feel like the way this account presents itself creates room for bad actors to grab at mistakes and twist the wording. For example, this whole thread started from a regular news account posting hashtags that they like. Then, when someone asked where GrapheneOS was, they responded saying they were open to changing it. Your response was to bring systemd into the matter. npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: @nprofile…8d0p Oh god, Kiwi Farms? Of course, its always them. Some people are just always full of hate and want to take it out on people who want to do good. I'm sorry y'all have to deal with this stuff and am honestly impressed that y'all keep your social media around at all. npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: @nprofile…8d0p Woah, their posts are really shitty. I honestly think that the best option would be to just not respond to them. I get trolls on my posts all the time, some of them even saying that my work is useless or making up things about postmarketOS that aren't true. If I clapped back at all of them I would probably be a lot sadder. I just want you to know that postmarketOS has very strict rules on harassment and people that bring that kind of energy into our spaces are usually instabanned. npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: @nprofile…8d0p GrapheneOS is a Linux distribution though? If Android is considered a form of Linux, then GrapheneOS would be a distribution thereof. I know there are some Android projects that don't like being called a Linux distribution, but, if GrapheneOS considers itself one, then who am I to say it isn't? Also, on the attacks thing. Every time I ever respond to anything to do with GrapheneOS, even if it isn't a debate, I get hit with that. Why? What have I done to deserve that? npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: @nprofile…8d0p I never said that Android is *not* Linux, I said its up to interpretation whether it is, as with all things. For example, the Wikipedia page on Mobile Linux includes Android (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_for_mobile_devices), but, if you look up "Mobile Linux", the results are for non-Android distributions because its just a category that people use when it makes sense. It was probably popularized by Pine64, you are right, but that's like saying people using "coke" instead of "soda" makes them wrong. npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: @nprofile…8d0p This is like arguing if a hotdog is a sandwich. Sure, its meat between two halves of bread, but some people might not see it as a sandwich, and some do. This is the same with Android. It has all the pieces to be a Linux distro, but whether it is is up to interpretation. Is it the userspace (the bun), the kernel (the meat), or something else that makes it a distro (a sandwich)? Or is it how its presented? In the end it doesn't matter, because both are good in their own right npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: @nprofile…8d0p I know that it doesn't require the explicit Android fork of the kernel, but every corporate vendor uses it as a base, so in the public consciousness, Android uses a fork of the Linux kernel. My point wasn't semantic, but categorical. If the public categorizes Android different from other Linux kernel-using operating systems, then Android is not Linux. This is the same with Darwin, which is technically a BSD-like, but it is not regularly lumped in with FreeBSD and the family. npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: @nprofile…8d0p @nprofile…c8pt @nprofile…dey5 I think you do have a point here. Android is Linux, and that isn't even an argument. The Android kernel, while being a fork, is still functionally just the Linux kernel. But, like all things, humans categorize, and "Mobile Linux" or "Linux Phones" is just a category that mostly includes distributions attempting to use close-to-mainline Linux kernels. "systemd phones" wouldn't work either, because postmarketOS for example supports OpenRC. npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: Friendly reminder that aromantic people are still people and that there is a lot more to life than romantic attraction. npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: @nprofile…d73q I prefer to stay on the good side of the people that can grade me however they want with no rules... npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: @nprofile…d73q Oh, I could probably say "I'm more used to [program that does the same thing but is FOSS]. Can I use that instead?" and they'd probably be fine with it if it can use the same file format. Its just easier to use the soc arch excuse. Most of my professors have nearly no idea how computers work. If I said it runs Linux, they'd probably ask if I could install Windows to make it work. npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: Using an ARM laptop is amazing, because if my professor wants me to use shitty old Windows software, "My laptop is ARM, so I can't run that" is a valid excuse, unlike "My laptop runs Linux". npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: I wanted to make some new pride wallpapers for postmarketOS, since there is a severe lack of them. I basically just created one for the most notable flags and a few that I personally like. If there is a flag that I didn't make a wallpaper for that you want, just comment and I'll make one. Or, people who *have* contributed but stopped. (With the exception of just not having time or such) I'd love to hear some feedback on how our contribution process could be streamlined. #PostMarketOS #Linux npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: I think the saddest part of the LLM infection of open-source software development is the loss of trust in each other. Beforehand, if somebody submitted some bad code, it could be assumed it was either a mistake or they weren't well-versed enough with the codebase. Nowadays, any code submitted by an unknown party brings immediate scrutiny and a "guilty until proven innocent" mentality. Its a valid defense mechanism, but I will never forgive the corpos for this. npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: @nprofile…yzy8 Honestly, that usually just gets ignored. What is better is to prompt to put a codeword or phrase into a comment and not notify the person using the LLM, so when they send in a patch and claim it is their's, a simple search will tell you if they violated your trust or not, since it isn't always obvious if somebody used an LLM for a patch. npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: @nprofile…sjem @nprofile…7u4p One of the major issues of LLMs is that they tie skills to a subscription. Developers have learned how to review code and debate changes effectively, but LLMs actively deskill people and cause them to rely solely on a paid tool. Another major issue is that the code that LLMs output are differently licensed depending on the legal jurisdiction, which can cause legal issues with licensing. Then there is the environmental issue of power and water and land used. npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: Sometimes I feel so inferior to the kernel devs that I meet working on postmarketOS. Its like, I'm over here trying to decide if lib or share makes more sense for a config file and they're over there adding camera support and porting entirely new devices. I know that both the distro and kernel sides are important, but the kernel side is a lot flashier and has more immediate reward (until you have to upstream your code, and then you are hit with the email thread of unfathomable despair). npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: Forgejo doesn't allow plain AI-based contributions anymore! (Forgejo is the thing that powers CodeBerg and can be used on its own.) > Forgejo does not accept works of authorship (code, documentation, etc.) either partially or completely generated by AI due to legal uncertainties. Now, this is not a blanket ban, because they still allow using it for everything else other than straight copy and paste text generation, but it is better than before. https://codeberg.org/forgejo/governance/commit/57bf0779bec61e2facd1679efc9bc5839e631d40 #CodeBerg #Forgejo #Git npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: What are some distros you would want to see a mobile version of? I'm curious because it seems there are only a few mainline Linux mobile projects and imagining more is fun. npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: @nprofile…xg92 I knew this was coming when they embraced AI so hard. I brushed it off at first as them trying to attract investment in the current ~~hellscape~~ market, but couldn't ignore the warning in my mind. Although, being such repairable devices, if people already have a Framework they don't have to buy another one ;) npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: Every time I see somebody boasting about hyprland I have two dueling thoughts. First is that they probably just see a cool-looking wm and wanted to try it out. The second is that they are supporting a very negative community and legitimizing it. The solution is usually to say that that's cool and then explain my reservations about it. Usually people fall into either "oh no I didn't know about that" or "yeah, so what?". Only one of those is worth continuing the conversation. npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: Nix is an interesting language. Why did you decide to get one? I finally have a stable income and want to save up for a new computer, but I don't know whether I want to get a Framework or get something running ARM. I know battery life is better on ARM and I do a lot of compilation for ARM, so getting around cross-compilation would be nice. Yet, the repairability and modularity of Framework is enticing. I run #VoidLinux as my daily driver and absolutely love #Linux (if that wasn't obvious). npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: #Lomiri is in #AlpineLinux! This comes after over four years of effort put in by @npub1e9g…kvc5 and various other contributors, along with the more recent three months of effort I have put in. This is a surreal moment for me because this is the biggest project I have ever worked on, so having something actually come of it is amazing. Lomiri should be added as a UI option to #postmarketOS once some final packages are upstreamed and bugs are worked out. #Linux #LinuxMobile https://gitlab.alpinelinux.org/alpine/aports/-/merge_requests/59779 npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: @npub1xvg…fy5f I don't think the newer Mir2 builds have been tested on the PinePhone yet. If you want to try testing go for it. npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: @npub1xvg…fy5f One thing that is needed is people to test Lomiri on different devices to make sure an issue isn't device-specific. This should be easier to get once Lomiri gets into Alpine, but for now we just have to guess. npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: @npub1xvg…fy5f The new version of Mir is still causing issues, but upstream knows about it and a Mir developer is working on updating qtmir. The only major changes have been getting audio working, disabling the startup wizard, and fixing GTK header bars. I am working on postmarketos-tweaks integration to make up for the lack of UT Tweak Tool. npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: Thank you #Freedesktop for being a standard that open-source desktops can strive to meet. Working on #Lomiri and seeing what happens when a corporation completely flouts standards makes me realize just how important said standards are for a competitive yet interoperable desktop experience. (I still love Lomiri, but I am not blind to its flaws. Blame Canonical, not UBports.) #Linux npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: @npub1m26…2jhh What are the benefits of using ZFS on a laptop? I thought it was meant for large collections of drives and such and ends up losing power on single-drive systems? npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: I know people are probably getting annoyed from all the #Lomiri posts from me, but here is another to push you just a bit further. A bug with msm8953/msm8996 devices where fonts would render poorly and drop letters was fixed! Oddly enough, the fix was not the same as used in Plasma Mobile, the other QT5 desktop, but was instead the same as the fix for Phosh, the GTK desktop. One step closer to *checks notes* something? #MobileLinux #LinuxMobile #postmarketOS npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: All the progress on Gnome Mobile makes me want to see Gnome ported to desktop. Imagine being able to integrate gestures, window snapping, and maybe even turning the pull-down menu into some sort of status menu!? Gnome Mobile on desktop would be amazing! Sadly it will probably never happen... npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: I am going to get back to working on #AbyssalLinux soon. I had to take a break to get Lomiri working on postmarketOS, but now that I am "free" I can get working again! There have been a few updates to the tools I am using to generate the rootfs, so that will be the first thing I work on. #Linux #LinuxMobile #MobileLinux #VoidLinux npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: Is there a reason to learn #Zig at this point? I know it aims to be a replacement for #C, but is there any actual practical use for it at the moment? (other than fun of course) #Programming npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: @npub1xvg…fy5f Ah. The Pinephone. Makes sense your gripes then. GTK4 isn't very nice to low-end devices in general. Wish that wasn't the case... npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: @npub1xvg…fy5f What is wrong with Tuba? I am posting this from a Phone running Phosh using Tuba. npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: @npub1xvg…fy5f Actually, there is no such thing as lomiri-touch-session. I assume it is just something to remind the Debian team to fix Lomiri on phones. npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: Some screenshots of the progress on the #Baeri desktop! This is not a project to replace Lomiri, but just a personal project for my own education. If you want to contribute to it, I would ask you to consider contributing to Lomiri first. https://gitlab.com/ubports/development/core/lomiri https://codeberg.org/Baeri/Baeri #Programming #LinuxMobile #MobileLinux #Linux #UI npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: @npub1xvg…fy5f The postmarketOS project is sort-of against the usage of flatpaks on mobile Linux and recommends using system packages. You would impliment it into pmbootstrap yourself though. (pmbootstrap is quite well-written so you can work on it with little to no python experience.) npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: @npub1xvg…fy5f Oh lol. Well I already rewrote it to be less frustrated. I really do admire the work of UBports. I can only imagine how annoying it is to keep all those old components running while they were completely abandoned by Ubuntu. One example would be qtmir, which struggles to keep up with Ubuntu's Mir because the Mir developers have a much larger team than UBports, leading to qtmir lagging behind and having to rely on depreciated or removed functions in Mir. npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: @npub1xvg…fy5f Ah. Maybe with it being midnight where I live I must have completely misunderstood how to write something without sounding angry. Let me edit the post lol. npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: @npub1xvg…fy5f Oh no. I am not bashing the developers at all. The fact that they still have Unity8 running and running so well is absolutely stunning. I am actually planning on seeing if I can help with the porting to QT6 and maybe if I can update the dependencies of Lomiri itself. I do have a crazy idea to just recreate Lomiri in Rust using QT6 so that porting also upgrades the components. (Why Rust? I program in Rust. Everything must be Rust. lol) npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: Honestly: It might be easier at this point to abandon the Unity base and just completely rewrite Lomiri from scratch. Maybe design the components with Unity as a guide, but they would have to be rewritten for modern standards. npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: As much as I love #Lomiri and that #UX is has, I am starting to lose my mind packaging it. It is all written with #Halium / Android in mind, so making it work on #mainline #Linux is hack after hack. It relies on so many forks of packages and those forks are all at least two to three years old. It uses old #Unity8 components that barely work with modern libraries. The people over at #UBports have done a fantastic job fixing these issues as they pop up, but it just isn't enough. npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: I don't like #GTK on mobile devices. Not only do I think that the framework doesn't fit the mobile form factor, but I also don't think it looks good on mobile. #Phosh is an amazing mobile UI. It is very performant and adapts Gnome to mobile very well, but I feel like it is dragged down by GTK. That isn't to say I hate GTK. I love Gnome on my desktop. I just don't like GTK/#libadwaita on mobile for a variety of usability and visual reasons. npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: @npub1xvg…fy5f Thanks! That's the goal! I really love Lomiri and the more distros it is on the more I get to experience my favorite desktop! npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: @npub1xvg…fy5f The Debian libraries are the same as the Ubuntu ones. My issue is that Alpine packages a newer version of a dependency and the newer version has breaking changes that I have to work around. npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: Just hit my first blocker for #Lomiri in #postmarketOS. The libraries required for the core apps are hard-coded to Ubuntu libraries. Guess it's time to patch the entirety of the core! #UBports #UbuntuTouch #Unity8 #MobileLinux #LinuxMobile #Linux #qt #qml npub18gylrx07nyj4jc0td5fvf2ez4paeuvl7tvg3jprrl43gcgr69qcql7tnxz justsoup :asexual_flag: Got a major refactor of abyssal-packages done. You can finally build packages without having to clone the entirety of void-packages just to get xbps-src.
