@nprofile…sftd In my opinion, no amount of anti-theft features is worth any amount e-waste.
If you have a physical device, you should be able to use it.

Every HackerNews post about IPv6 has some of the worst, most privileged, idiotic, vibe-coded, proprietary, ignorant, 16bit, capital-guzzling, unicorn takes I've ever known on the subject:
- IPv6 addresses are too hard to remember.
So? You're not meant to remember addresses, that's why we have DNS, write it down, literally a non-issue.
- IPv6 is confusing and I don't want to learn something new.
That's a personal issue buddy, either start reading or get left behind, that's what you said about AI right? More things that you depend on this transition.
- NATing has solved the IP limit problem so there's no point.
NATing is a plaster slapped onto brain bleed, easy and cheap, but ineffective, it causes a wide range of usability problems, such as blanket IP bans, restrictions on self-hosting, connectivity issue for VPNs both private and corporate.
To make matters worse, the effects are significantly worse in poorer countries, while Europe, China and the USA have a bounty of IPv4s to use (though China's still aren't enough), India has been on critically short supply for a while now with reports of multiple NATed network layers being issued. Imagine if you got banned from Valo because your neighbour 4 districts away got caught cheating.
- We've been trying for 40 years and it hasn't worked so let's give up.
OK, we're going to give up on solving world hunger too then because that's clearly not getting anywhere, and the energy crisis too while we're at it, just shut it all down.
Just because you personally haven't seen the progress or felt its effects doesn't mean its not happening, people smarter than you have been working on this before you were born, and at this rate might continue to work on it after you switch careers to Goose Farming.
- IPv6 hasn't worked so let's just make IPv7.
Insane take, despite how it looks, IPv6 support is extremely widespread and ready to go, the reluctance of big tech and ISPs is purely due to the cost implication and lack of enforcement, creating a brand new spec now would enforce another 40 year delay just to assuage your own personal opinion.
- IPv6 is a security risk because the router isn't NATing.
Misunderstanding of what NATing does. Even with a public-facing IP on every device, ports are still protected by the router's firewall.
- IPv6 is a privacy issue because now you can easily identify every device in a home by its public IP.
A valid concern, if it hadn't been identified and resolved with the Privacy Extensions to SLAAC that randomises your IP address after a set time period, mitigating the problem to that of your NATed IPv4 Public IP, if not making it more private by muddying the telemetry waters.

Just an extremely rare centralized service outage from a 99.9999% uptime rock-solid provider.
I'm sure it won't happen a second, third, fourth time (this month).
Please keep relying on expensive unnecessary load balancing and definitely give Cloudflare your TLS keys (for security).
It's literally unsinkable, and AI will surely make it even more reliable, BTW we're laying off another 50,000 employees

- Netflix capping streaming resolutions on "un-trusted hardware (like my computer)",
- Denuvo in video games requiring an internet connection and time-based installation limits. Preventing you from playing the game you own.
- Music files being locked to the platform and software you bought them on, so you can't play them on your parent's Hi-Fi.
- Books bought on Kindle not working on your Kobo.
- Research Papers encoded with a now-obsolete PDF DRM that can no longer be read.
DRM will ALWAYS screw over the PAYING customer while doing NOTHING to affect the pirate.

Hi Chat, soon I will be building a new Nation off the coast of Germany and the Netherlands. Consisting of approximately 300,000km², sitting at an average elevation of 270m. This will devastate the shipping and fishing industries for both.
It will consist of vast grasslands intermingled with sparse forests. Populated entirely by 56 billion sheep and 67 until-now-extinct bird species, exact numbers are unknown.
There are no known maps of the area and satellite imagery produces few results for which to use as reference points.
Radio frequencies including satellite connections do not permeate through the area or above atmosphere.
There are no roads and attempts at construction are thwart with frequent technical and logistical problems, theft, sabotage and in some cases murder.
Germany will claim the land due to the economic benefits of wool production, but this will be in dispute for 15 years. Settlers will be granted citizenship after living in the location for 5 years but they must withdraw any existing citizenships. Those who chose this option will not be seen again.
Construction has already begun and cannot be stopped. Trespassing on the land will be met with distant stares and general animosity, but most who travel beyond the horizon will not return.
At least one of the sheep is building a nuclear bomb, its intentions are unclear.

If you're an EU Citizen, please consider signing the Stop Killing Games Initiative: https://www.stopkillinggames.com/eci
It's not just about Video Games, it's about consumer rights.
It aims to prevent publishers from producing video games with the intended purpose of disabling them in future. It does this by requiring an End-Of-Life Plan, which involves making reasonable efforts to allow people to continue playing the game after official support ends.
Many games become unplayable after a period of time because they are designed with essential online-only features that cannot possibly be supported forever.
This stands in stark opposition to normal consumer practices where you either:
- Buy a product forever.
- Rent a license with a set deadline.
If this initiative passes we would have strong grounds for a law that:
- Prevents the unnecessary loss of media due to harmful practices.
- Benefits gamers who want to keep playing games past the sell-by-date.
- Benefits developers who poured years of their life into a product, only to see it vanish forever due to some bigwig exec.
- Sets a precedent for protecting consumer rights, with a knock-on affect to other products requiring online features to work, such as cars, phones, and other software.

Every time I use windows I feel sick, confused and annoyed.
The first thing it asks you on install is to choose how much data you want to give up for advertising and diagnostics. Not whether you want to send any, just how much, with the least being "minimal".
The constant barrage of ads, mandatory online connections, and corporate integrations disgusts me, and slows me down, I can't ignore them I have to decline and then investigate how to turn them off.
The number of hoops I have to jump through just to get a usable operating system is absurd, such as editing the registry so the file search shows files and not bing results, having to open Edge and ignore 5 requests to sign-in so I can download a real browser, while also ignoring 5 patronising and manipulative attempts to deter me from switching from Edge.
Then I have to download a bunch of third party proprietary drivers just to use my GPU properly, all of which need me to click through 5 windows to complete the install else I'll accidentally install the trial for some spyware antivirus or end up enabling enough analytics to recreate my personality as an AI, which will naturally be used to advertise to my own mother.
I then spend 15 minutes going through the privacy settings checking and disabling various additional data collection features that weren't mentioned in the setup because this isn't my computer it's Microsoft's and they deserve access to it.
Then I have to consider how much more effort I want to spend making windows mine, so I open up Group Policy and enforce several enterprise only settings that actually disables data collection entirely, disables tips, feedback surveys, "experiences" and other such garbage no one wants, knowing in despair more will be added in a new update and I'll have to check everything again. All of which is only available of you have Windows Pro because we couldn't allow just any old grunt full access to their own computer, instead we'll paywall it behind $150, or you can buy a dodgy key on G2A for $10 or hell run that massgrave thing and pirate your copy which btw is 100% malware and you should not run dodgy scripts off the internet especially ones so blatantly obfuscated and designed to be easily switched out to any script the highest bidder asks for.
Windows is user hostile, it's designed to exploit you, to squeeze you hard of as much cash and data that it can find. Windows is not popular because its good, but because Microsoft have a monopoly on the market, because so much software is designed to run on it, which makes a loop of parasiticsm, because it's there in front of you and you don't know any better (not your fault).
I don't use Linux as a joke, or a compromise, or as a struggle, or just for the moral high-ground. I use it because it's actually really good, I watch anime, i play games, i write emails, i watch youtube, i code (or try to), i manage servers, i send cat pictures to my grandma, i organise files, i do whatever the fuck i want and its between me and me and no one else and it just works, it's worth customising, it does what I ask and it does it quickly, it doesn't feel like I'm renting my computer, it doesn't hide things or patronise me, it doesn't ask me to spend money, or buy a subscription, it doesn't try to manipulate or gaslight me, it doesn't misunderstand the concept of consent, it doesn't randomly update and break itself, and it absofuckinglutely doesn't have the audacity of telling me to "license" it for the privilege of using a glorified digital billboard.
If you want your computer to feel like an abusive relationship, constantly working to undermine you, getting slower and slower while taking away features and replacing them with things you don't want, recording eveything you're doing and sharing it with Daddy Microsoft whike asking for money for that privilege, just because it's familiar to you, because it runs the software you grew up with, because it runs Valorant and League or some 30 year old enterprise centrifuge in your nuclear fuel refinement facility then that's fine. That's your perogative.
But Linux does work, and it works well. If you put in the effort to learn something new, (and it's not much effort, it's less than using the registry or policy editor), then in the long term everything gets so much easier, and the endless stream of bullshit Microsoft pumps out won't affect you.
I run Ubuntu BTW, LTS, with uncustomised Gnome and FireFox in a snap.

@nprofile…36ma assuming this is a work computer that has internet access but is just restricted, have you considered DNS exfiltration? :aru_0130:
You could setup a listener on port 53 on a server and then make a resolve DNS request through powershell on your gpg computer using the gpg key as a subdomain and specify the DNS server IP as your server.
It's horribly insecure and if it's a private key you can consider it compromised. But it would be funny to do :aru_0130:

Ubuntu finally supports HDR in 25.04, I've had a HDR monitor for several years but never been able to use that feature.
Anyway, tested it out on the Live CD, it just made vibrant colours become washed out. HDR is complex and weird, it's like a standard implementing multiple different things at once where the end result is most things look worse or burn your irises with brightness. Doesn't help that a monitor can implement only parts of the standard and still advertise as "HDR".
I've heard it's better if your HDR supports True Black, like an OLED, otherwise doesn't seem to be worth it, though there's probably more nuance to it than that.

I turn on my PC.
The local wildlife are immediately sterilised by the untreated waste of my four un-shielded nuclear reactors, operating far beyond criticality.
The sound of 10,000 cooling fans deafens the city's morning traffic as my warehouse of 500 parallelised AMD EPYC CPUs stolen from OpenAI burst into life, forming the equivalent processing power of 2019 in one room.
Nearby, my cluster of Nvidia 6090 Test Cards begins to warp the local time continuum as they calculate answers man was never meant to know.
Very gently, I open Microsoft Teams.
Instantly, the already deafening noise of fans increases to a murderous wail as they try to keep my equipment at operating temperatures. A nuclear reactors' fusion catches up with its cooling and explodes destroying the lives of millions. The floor begins to melt away as my processors overclocked ten-fold reach critical mass and descend directly into hell. My Nvidia cluster collapses into a singularity and begins to devour the planet.
Quickly now, I open a text chat, it's a bit laggy.
The sheer struggle of loading some text destroys the remaining systems. Me and my equipment are deleted from reality by an unknown overseer.
Humanity is not ready for instant messaging.

I'm going to make a fedi-bot. Every time a film is announced the bot makes a post saying "I'm going to leak the full copy of <film> before it releases.".
Then, when one of the films is inevitably leaked by someone else but the trail goes cold, the authorities will investigate my bot as a potential culprit, I mean it's clearly admitted to the crime, that's an easy arrest, easy win.
So, they'll spend weeks to subpoena the ISP for the address of the IP address, it'll lead to a raspberry Pi I stole from a warehouse break-in 6 years prior stuffed into the ceiling of Birmingham New St McDonalds connected to their free Wi-Fi which is actually a proxy for a second Raspberry Pi I stole from an Oxford University Computer Science demonstration during an open-day 4 years prior using a SIM card I took from a 3G connected Kindle I found in the local tip, which I've connected to a car battery I stole out of a random Citreon in London a week ago, hooked up to nearby private solar-field I spliced off of somewhere in rural midlands.
On the Raspberry Pi will be gigabytes of compressed encrypted data each one named after a random slew of political party members and a date. The encryption passwords are 4000 characters of garbage, the targz files are all cat pictures I harvested from Reddit. It's worthless intel, they'll have wasted decades.

VLC Media Player is incapable of going backwards 1 frame, it can go forward but not backwards.
This is due to real limitations on video codecs, it is simply an impossible action to do, the explanations are available on multiple forums. It simply can't be done.
MPV of course, does it anyway, I don't know how.
