Does #Bonn already have a #NixOS or #RustLang meetup? 🤔

Should just be this as nixfmt-rs uses the same binary name as nixfmt:

in the end you can publish wherever you want, and I can avoid places I don't want to read. It just means I won't read any of your articles, which is fine 🤷‍♂️

To me this is an acceptable compromise, but I also don't think this is what we would have ended up with without any backlash to the initial plans.

#Eventbrite to be acquired by #BendingSpoons, following their acquisition of #Meetup.com which caused many users to migrate to Eventbrite in the first place. I think at this point if becomes very obvious that the #Fediverse is the best place to coordinate your meetups, and you have many options to choose from: #Mobilizon, #Gancio and even #Wordpress with the #ActivityPub Event Bridge plugin. Everyone knows Bending Spoon's playbook, enshittification is inevitable.

At our next #Nix #Heidelberg meetup on Friday, October 17, we'll hear from @npub1s05…tnkj on "Nix in 2025: Why I switched".
Michael Stapelberg is the inventor and maintainer of the #i3 window manager, a former #Debian #Linux Developer, and creator of the Go appliance platform gokrazy. Having occasionally tried #NixOS over the years, Michael finally went all in in 2025 and has published multiple blog posts in the process.
Make sure to sign up for it on our #Mobilizon!

To sum it up, please reach out if you:
- are interested in #Nix, #NixOS or #RustLang
- live in the #Mannheim or #Heidelberg region
and either:
- can help out with recording and editing our meetup talks
- can offer a somewhat regularly available venue for 20 to 35 participants (doesn't matter if it's company offices, universities, hackspaces, ...)

My next point is only partially related. The association we moved our meetup under (@npub1phj…w6dr) is, after its 10th anniversary, close to being dissolved, unless I can gather some people to rekindle it. This is no requirement for the continuation of our meetup, but then I'd need some kind of partnership to take its place for a stable venue in #Mannheim or #Heidelberg (or multiple, be it from local associations or companies that are using or interested in #Nix, #NixOS or #RustLang).

Now the first thing you'll think of might be "just do less". My honest answer to that is that in this case, I'd rather stop organizing these meetups. I'm happy to take care of the scheduling, reaching out, organizing and moderating. But I badly need some people to at least take recording and editing out of my mind. Our last meetup was in January. The reason for this is I was burned out by still needing to edit our last recordings, which I only managed to publish half a year later.

Organizing a meetup is no easy task. I'm personally responsible for reaching out to people for talks, find a venue (we have no stable venue unfortunately, even though the Mathematikon was stable for most of the year at least), schedule date and time between our presenters and the venue, market it on social media (on five different platforms), make sure we have a functional recording setup (because the venues seldom do), moderate the meetup, cut the talk recordings, publish and again market them.

Some realtalk and call for help (thread): for a bit over a year, I've been somewhat regularly organizing the domestic #NixOS and #RustLang meetups in #Mannheim and #Heidelberg. What started as a somewhat spontaneous collaboration of two people that went to university together quickly moved into an already established non-profit association to allow more people to participate in the organization and shape the form of our meetups. The truth is, it was and still is mostly a one man show.

:boost_requested:

My train trip was not without complications, but not because of DB (the effects of the recent flooding apparently closed some tunnels in Austria). Nonetheless, I only needed 9 hours door to door, so that turned out fine. 😄
