the worst offender is the entire code base, the second worst is that sysd intercepts reboot and halt commands by not going to init 6, but questioning the intent of the request to reboot or halt (or in some regressions there's a reflection to "halt -p" which should halt and power off but instead it reboots... so there's never a power off occurring. I've watched it do that on SOL over and over. madness. they're trying their best to implement windows failures into Linux, but they will fail, because sysd is an exercise in gross failure.

windows is never secure, that's their goal. it's always "been a feature" never a goal. there are enough technically smart people in Redmond who could have fixed or prevented issues over the years but they never do - the coincidence goes in a parallel diagonal up and to the right: profit, anti-security, anti-privacy, anti-openness, anti-competitive, anti-ethical.
Microsoft is not a good company, they do not make good products, and they export their failures everywhere they exist. Windows is a virus magnet, maker, and distributor. It's always been this way, since the start. Having worked with their engineering teams to build extremely fat interconnects on masses of dark fiber, ostensibly to "connect the world..." (yeah right), they are both a monolithic monopoly-reliant corporation and yet individually most employees I've worked with there have been reasonable and decent people. Sad situation.

absolutely agree there, those lock ups have been very disruptive to enterprise use of Linux workstations. my daily driver doesn't get rebooted more often than once per month unless there's a hardware problem — Wayland is the single most effective way to force a reboot in that respect. it can take an hour to setup the workstation tooling after that happens, which is especially not agreeable to multiple forced reboots per day. Wayland is not stable.

yep, those screenshots are more like Ultima VIII. The gap between pre-release and IX is massive... completely different worlds of immersion. Loved both, but VIII has a special place in my memories. Inevitably the game engine from pre-alpha had to be scrapped, which led to an emotionally painful delay between releases.
thanks for the post! gosh, it's been ages since I thought about those games.

shame about the OnlyKey, I'll have to look at some other options. particularly I liked that it has a PIN to secure its use — the unauth aspects of yubikey have always concerned me.
anyway, services are OpenSSH, Radius, OpenLDAP, FIDO2, OAuth, OTP.

intriguing post. what's your opinion on this implementation for smartcard authentication — if you had an ideal arrangement would anything be changed? I'm looking for a similar solution, though I've not used Nitrokey, I do have a PIV C910 and OnlyKey.

Linux with ZFS on root, using ZFS native encryption (no need for luks), works really well on Gentoo. I'm impressed with OddLama's installer tui-based scripts, the time savings are significant.
one item of interest: only two partitions required (three if swap is created). ZFS handles all of the usual requirements except EFI, just the way it should be.

Is that more or less, or equivalent, to previous years over the past decade — adjusted for comparison to global migration trends where every Western country has experienced a massive shift in these border crossing issues?
with 287, are we doing a worse job when the numbers are described by standard deviation off of the trend, as described by department analysis which tracks expected values? big numbers are big, but proper statistics are critical for understanding the underlying data.
is this 287 considered too high because it should be lower based on allocated resources, or too high because of budget allocation mismanagement, or too high for moral reasons? or maybe it's a substantial improvement from earlier quarters in yearly seasonal immigration patterns? it's not clear what your message is other than telling us a numerical value.
I'm really quite interested in the topic, from a scientific analysis and humanitarian ethics perspective, so I hope these questions don't come off as being negative or critical.

The vast and varied subject of ‘Women’s Safety Online’ is a topic which impacts many facets of daily life, including emotional and physical well-being. This post is not a primer on the concepts, rather it offers a short timeline to explain why I am no longer on LinkedIn or Twitter social networks for reasons of personal safety and privacy.

the NIC has to support it as well as the optic, and the switch side as well, as FEC has to be pair-negotiated.
what kind of hardware is involved? FEC debugging helps to know the following:
switch os: arista, cisco, juniper, etc
optic: DAC, AOC, SFP/SFP+/SFP28/etc
nic driver: ig, ix, ixl, etc
nic mode: i350, x550, x710, etc
nic firmware version: intel-nvmupdate util

💾 Data Processing Existentialism 💾
there's a certain feeling which occurs, when calmly scripting an EXIF metadata analysis function, and a sanity-test loop returns an array with one photo's 'date_created' field set all the way back in 2016, and you suddenly think...
holy fuckin hell it's been nearly a decade?!
nine years and nine pounds, no more straightening my hair, no more size four, but that's life. getting older is never anything new, and I felt similarly the prior decade before. all throughout there's rarely been a dull moment, but nine years ago was just before the neuro-endocrine functions changed, before Tokyo, Fiji, Costa Rica, Victoria, and so very many places in-between.
I shared an introduction on social media, twitter and mastodon a few months apart in 2022, discussing whether I'd make it to this year, whether my diagnosis would find resolve. I really didn't know how any of it would turn out, didn't live with expectations or engage with hope; and so this year when treatment finally completed — after all of the trials and scans and tests — it's done. finally, finally done.
I don't have to worry about those things anymore, which is a beautiful thing, and an entirely new spectrum of emotion that's impossible to convey. now life can return to normal, however that's defined going forward. 💝

You may prefer the sanity of the BSD community of Operating systems instead of the complete mess of what Linux has become. For the simplest introduction I would recommend looking at the Live version of GhostBSD (based on FreeBSD, but with a full desktop environment ready for use by default). There's no corporatization, no pandering, no ads, no gimmicky whatever, and the BSD license is actually free software (unlike the restrictions of Linux's GPL).

Tethics has been coming to mind far too often this past Q1'25.
Granted, Q4'24 was a total shitshow in a lot of corp ways for a lot of people when it comes to the non-existence of meaningful ethics, and really all four quarters of '24, oh and also '23... annnnyway...
So.. Tethics.. these days we don't even have a pledge for orgs to pretend to sign and care about. It is assumed that ruthlessness is the rule, and work/life balance carries no weight for far too many managerial structures.
Lest not dismay, do not fret! There is a Tethics website: https://www.tethics.us

correct on all points. every single claim that systemd proponents make to its benefit is already an existing tool or command or method which has existed in Unix and BSDs (and to a lesser extent in pre-systemd Linux distros).
having been professionally involved with all of the major non-windows OS's for over a decade longer than systemd has existed, I can assuredly say that far too many of those claims exist simply due to the claimants vast inexperience with operating system design and engineering. they don't even know, and seemingly don't care, that we never needed systemd, and the vast majority never wanted it.
it's no coincidence that systemd was forced into the Linux communities at the same time that MSFT stopped trying to crush it from beyond -- instead that was the very same era in which they began their assaults on open source via "embrace extend extinguish".

🏥 Today is an Anniversary 🏥
On this Saturday one decade prior, I was not alive.
Firefighters broke down the door. Hypoxic body moved to the floor.
EMT slit my throat. Primed the airway for life support.
Defibrillators fired off. Electric reset, buffers gone.
Brain remained offline, machines keeping in-time.
While the medical pathways may describe, too many emotions remain intertwined. The neural surgeons, the ER team, and everyone else in between, they simply said that I was gone. We had both died, one twin following the other, yet against all odds till on this day — today — I am somehow still alive.
Today I am 3,655 days old 🩷

🚒 iPhone vs Android 🚒
Round 394!
ok but in all seriousness, let's say I want to send some SMS/RCS using my cell, but I want to do that from the computer... should be feasible?
iPhone's iMessage: "we love our walled garden so much that NO ONE can send messages using a web interface, despite iMessage being an iCloud enabled app and the ecosystem having iCloud apps available online to any non-Mac -- but we decided that iMessage alone should never be usable on the iCloud web interface (because reasons?)"
Android via Messages App: "sure thing fellow Happy Camper! here you go! https://messages.google.com and it's just as secure as using the device itself."
Best part... Android's method WORKS ON FREEBSD!

easy, don't bother with GPL. it's unnecessarily restrictive and generally misunderstood by many developers. whenever it's under my discretion, then the policy is to prioritize BSD*, MIT, CDDL, and some of the Apache licenses.

🤍 Appeal to the Browser Goddesses 🤍
Can we please make it a thing where 32GB of RAM isn't an insufficient amount for day to day web browser usage? Getting an OOM core dump for that reason is inexcusable.
- Should the Zoom browser app really need 2GB on a single tab when it's already downscaling a 1080p feed to 320p on an enterprise account?
- Should Amazon's website really need 1GB per tab just to view the cart or a ~800Mb for a single simple product page?
- Please remind me how an MKdocs fully static page with a single 400k image and no datatables or fancy JS somehow require 242Mb?
- Or perhaps shed some light on the requirement where Google's main page with a single search form somehow needs ~500Mb
There are no "good reasons" for these inefficiencies. We don't suddenly have better search fields or compressed jpegs now vs a decade ago with 1/10th of the system resources.

OPNsense 24.7.4_1
Whoever decided to change the dashboard chart/graph libs and change the reasonable metrics info tables from useful to garbage... clearly this was a terrible idea that should never have been forced upon the user community. It looks like a child's toy instead of the once useful set of charts and specs/stats.
I''ve been using OPNsense since the split from PFsense, have loved its features and potential and its community, but over the last few releases there have been too many negatively impactful changes which indicate very concerning decision making at the top. If it weren't already setup at several critical points in my homelab and colo, then I'd never choose this product.
While having a GUI for a security appliance is nice and convenient sometimes, this is just a waste of time anymore... Even writing this post makes me sad because I recognize that nothing positive will come of it - sputtering into the wind of internet commentary.
Guess it's time to dust off my BSD-RP build system and generate an installer, spend part of the weekend fork-lifting it into a replacement for OPNsense, validate ALL of the pf rules, and convert service configs from OPNsense' XML to a reasonable JSON or UCI template format... etc etc...
Sadness.

oh, forgot to mention, zstd compression levels range 1-19 (further, yes but via extra option)... but guess where modern servers perform the best (best defined as ratio of compressed file size to bandwidth/sec)...
welp, it's zstd-1 and occasionally zstd-2. higher compression levels than that and the performance trade off in relation to file size is generally wasteful. but wait, what about if we use hardware compression accelerators... sure, and the result is the same but with higher bandwidth.

Contentious statement, maybe, but this comes up so often that it makes me wonder how the same problems persist over decades...
FreeBSD's pkg system is superior in every way to Debian's apt package system. How often does apt crap-out from dependency failures? every day it seems. FreeBSD pkg... never had those issues with binaries or ports in >20 years. :freebsd_logo:
makes me wonder, do people just never branch out to see alternate solutions and methods for implementation - instead just assuming that their reinvented wheel is always the best? that's some fanboy scheiß if so :tux:
and to the fanboys ahead of time, I've run many a private apt repo for large orgs, and build perhaps too many debs for sanity sake; I know how the systems work, it's just not a good implementation compared to others (even in linux world there's dnf and portage to show this is not a flame on linux specifically, just apt. apt sucks.

Hello Fediverse! It's time for a new instance #introduction, having recently migrated to BSD.Cafe :freebsd_logo: from hachyderm.io.
The neurosurgeons said I wouldn't wake up from the coma, but they were wrong.
Then they said I'd never walk or talk again, but they were wrong.
I never expected to reach forty, and so often now I wonder, "how long will the 🧠 tumor let me live?"
Professionally, I'm a Principal Systems Architect focused on performance engineering for "global edge compute" workloads. This year marks two ticks from having worked for a quarter-century in the tech industry. 💾 :sparc64: 🥰
Personally, my interests range from backcountry telemark skiing and long-range marksmanship in the wilderness, to berries and bunnies and everything in-between as long as it's cute and pink and sweet and made of hearts! 💗
