I've spent quality time at "R1" universities first getting my CS PhD and then teaching for over a decade. For the last few years I've been in industry doing mostly (though not exclusively) systems software. I've been a software architect for foundational services on two recent product roll-outs that are making actual money. No "crypto" no "AI" no "surveillance" and remote only (unless it's a teaching gig).
