Quick appreciation post for checklists.
I had to do a delicate migration in prod recently, so I did the usual SRE thing: step by step checklist, minimize the critical section where things are down, lots of sanity checks throughout, dry run before the real thing. (If I was really serious, I would have found someone to watch over my shoulder too.)
First time through, one of the sanity checks in a critical section failed, so I immediately aborted and rolled back. Turned out to be a trivial bug, but it would have been ugly if I’d continued and didn’t catch it until later.
Fixed the bug, started the procedure again from the beginning, everything worked fine this time through.
Kudos to the humble checklist. Far from the first time it’s saved my ass.

For me, the defining characteristic of open source is that you’re giving up control over your code. You can choose how much to give up, based on the license, but you pretty much always end up with less control than if you kept it closed source.
That’s good! It’s the point. I tend to license my open source work as public domain, which gives up as much control as possible, but that’s just me.
Regardless, once you’ve given up control, it’s gone. You can re-license going forward, but not retroactively. You can’t – or at least, shouldn’t – try to claw back control later. You gave it up. That’s the whole point.

If you find yourself saying “this time is different,” think first. History rhymes pretty damn hard, human nature doesn’t change much, if at all, and the very few times that genuinely do turn out to be different, we don’t tend to see or call out early on. Predicting the future is difficult, and we’re not good at it.
It may feel good to think we’re special, living in a special unique time, and occasionally we are, but not often. End of history illusion, etc.

Hi Bridgy Fed fans! It’s time for another status update, headlined by two big new features.
First, you can now use custom domain handles on accounts bridged into Bluesky! Web sites and fediverse accounts can both do this; click through for instructions. Here’s an example. We’ve been excited about this for a while, we hope it makes bridged accounts feel a bit more like first class citizens.
Second, if you deactivate bridging to Bluesky, you can now undo it and bring back your bridged account! Just un-block and re-follow the bot, or for a web site, file an issue or ping me. This is supported if you first deactivated after 2024-10-22; we’re still working on the rest.
I’m also excited that Tamschi has generously volunteered to help triage issues and coordinate development. He’s been a valuable presence on the project for a while now. Please give him a warm welcome!
Oh, and I got distracted for a bit and built a labeler that emits custom self-labels, then promptly realized that custom self-labels probably aren’t allowed, even though Bridgy Fed has been using them since launch. Ah well!

Morning all. Quite a day yesterday, and today so far. I’m obviously taking a beating from everyone who thinks the Bluesky bridge should be opt in. OK.
I want to run one idea by you all. The way the bridge is currently designed, no fediverse profiles or other content are proactively bridged into Bluesky. If someone on Bluesky wants to see or follow someone on the fediverse, they have to manually request it on the bridge. That fediverse user’s posts are then only bridged going forward, and only if someone follows them.
What if, the first time someone on Bluesky requests to follow someone on the fediverse via the bridge, the fediverse user gets prompted, “X from Bluesky wants to follow you. Are you ok with connecting with Bluesky?”, maybe via DM. I assume that would still be considered opt in?
Realistically, most people in the fediverse will never hear about the bridge. Traditional opt in and opt out both generally expect people to proactively find a setting or take some action, often one that only a tiny fraction of people ever learn about. I don’t really care how many people discover or use the bridge, but this kind of just-in-time prompt, only shown when someone wants to follow or interact with them, feels like a useful improvement in that it puts the decision in front of them directly.
Thanks to @kio for the idea. It seems promising; I’m now planning to try it out well before launch. Let me know if you don’t like it.

Bridgy Fed now supports all web sites! You can now use it from the fediverse to see and follow any site, regardless of whether it has microformats2, webmentions, or WebFinger. Bridgy Fed extracts as much profile info as it can, generates fediverse posts from Atom and RSS feeds, and so on.
Web sites start out bridged to the fediverse as [domain]@web.brid.gy. For example, to see new nature.com articles in your fediverse feed, follow @[email protected]. And as always, if you have a web site, you can upgrade Bridgy Fed to use its domain in its fediverse handle, like mine at @[email protected].
(I’ve loved seeing other similar bridges recently too, including @[email protected]‘s RSS Parrot and @[email protected]‘s pi-activitypub-server. We’re all pulling in the same direction!)
This is one more step toward making Bridgy Fed support people wherever they are, on any network, fully bidirectionally. Stay tuned for more!

My dad has spent some of his retirement doing hobbyist machine learning projects. He heard the term “data lake” a while back and has taken to calling his datasets a “data swamp.” Feels like a terminology improvement the whole field could get behind.
