It’s VCs’ job to predict the future in all sorts of directions, and be extremely confident about those predictions, and also be wrong 9 out of 10 times. Remember that next time you hear a VC say…anything.
(Not that VCs are all dumb, or delusional, or malicious! Far from it. But still.)

What can be learned about maintenance mind from all this? One thing that seems clear is the need to examine its opposite: neglect mind. Examples of both were evident in my tale of the 1968 Golden Globe Race…
The race's biggest loser, Donald Crowhurst, had neither maintenance training nor much sailboat experience, and he was delusionally optimistic. His neglect mind was part laziness and ignorance, part surrender to fantasy.
Maintainers are realists.

Quick appreciation post for checklists.
I had to do a delicate migration in prod recently, so I did the usual SRE thing: step by step checklist, minimize the critical section where things are down, lots of sanity checks throughout, dry run before the real thing. (If I was really serious, I would have found someone to watch over my shoulder too.)
First time through, one of the sanity checks in a critical section failed, so I immediately aborted and rolled back. Turned out to be a trivial bug, but it would have been ugly if I’d continued and didn’t catch it until later.
Fixed the bug, started the procedure again from the beginning, everything worked fine this time through.
Kudos to the humble checklist. Far from the first time it’s saved my ass.

Fun fact: “six seven” traces its roots all the way back to Old English in the 1380s. Geoffrey Chaucer coined it in his epic poem Troilus and Criseyd:
But manly set the world on sixe and sevene;
And, if thou deye a martir, go to hevene."
200 years later, Shakespeare picked it up and used it in his play Richard II:
But time will not permit: all is uneven
And every thing is left at six and seven
The common English phrase “at sixes and sevens,” from an early dice game that preceded craps, is unrelated.
It is thought that the expression was originally to set on cinque and sice (from the French for five and six). These were apparently the most risky numbers to shoot for (‘to set on’) and anyone who tried for them was considered careless or confused.

…solar geoengineering’s economics are almost the exact opposite of climate change’s: While global warming is a “free rider” problem, where countries must collaborate to avoid burning cheap fossil fuels, solar geoengineering is a “free driver” problem, where one country could theoretically do it alone.

We had some downtime bridging to Bluesky last night, roughly 10:30-15:30 UTC. Back up and running as of a couple hours ago. Bridging from Bluesky, and between web and fediverse, were unaffected. Apologies for the outage!

WALL·E
Lately I’ve been thinking about orphaned code. Code that’s still running, live, with no remaining developers or users.
Forgotten hardware devices. Deserted VMs on cloud free tiers. Smart contracts whose DAOs disbanded years ago. Old school internet worms. Abandoned, starving Tamagotchi.
Can you think of other examples?
There are obvious conclusions here about maintainability, ecosystem security, etc, but I’m not here to lecture, I have no particular conclusions. Just a vibe.
It’s a very, very…mad world.

For me, the defining characteristic of open source is that you’re giving up control over your code. You can choose how much to give up, based on the license, but you pretty much always end up with less control than if you kept it closed source.
That’s good! It’s the point. I tend to license my open source work as public domain, which gives up as much control as possible, but that’s just me.
Regardless, once you’ve given up control, it’s gone. You can re-license going forward, but not retroactively. You can’t – or at least, shouldn’t – try to claw back control later. You gave it up. That’s the whole point.

If you find yourself saying “this time is different,” think first. History rhymes pretty damn hard, human nature doesn’t change much, if at all, and the very few times that genuinely do turn out to be different, we don’t tend to see or call out early on. Predicting the future is difficult, and we’re not good at it.
It may feel good to think we’re special, living in a special unique time, and occasionally we are, but not often. End of history illusion, etc.
This time is probably not different. At least, not significantly. And that’s ok.
(This is not a subtweet about anything in particular, not even politics. Promise. But whatever you’re thinking about, it may still apply!)

Hi Bridgy Fed fans! It’s time for another status update, headlined by two big new features.
First, you can now use custom domain handles on accounts bridged into Bluesky! Web sites and fediverse accounts can both do this; click through for instructions. Here’s an example. We’ve been excited about this for a while, we hope it makes bridged accounts feel a bit more like first class citizens.
Second, if you deactivate bridging to Bluesky, you can now undo it and bring back your bridged account! Just un-block and re-follow the bot, or for a web site, file an issue or ping me. This is supported if you first deactivated after 2024-10-22; we’re still working on the rest.
I’m also excited that Tamschi has generously volunteered to help triage issues and coordinate development. He’s been a valuable presence on the project for a while now. Please give him a warm welcome!
Oh, and I got distracted for a bit and built a labeler that emits custom self-labels, then promptly realized that custom self-labels probably aren’t allowed, even though Bridgy Fed has been using them since launch. Ah well!
Lots more since last time too:
Add original account ids to Bluesky DID documents
Scale new user signup better
Fix nasty rare bug that bridged reposts with the wrong original post
Translate fediverse @-mentions to webmentions
Better error handling in RSS/Atom feed processing
Improve Sharkey/Misskey compatibility with images in posts and profile banners
Improve GoToSocial compatibility (more)
Detect and handle Bluesky handle changes better
Bridge videos into Bluesky more efficiently
Significantly improve Bluesky firehose efficiency
Bluesky => fediverse: link mentions of non-bridged users to their bsky.app profile
Improve handling of deleted fediverse accounts
Full AT Protocol lexicon schema validation
…and lots more bug fixes and internal improvements
As usual, feel free to ping me with feedback, questions, and bug reports. You can follow the now label on GitHub to see what I’m currently focusing on. See you on the bridge!

I wish I had a better sense of where gravity comes from. Anyone have good intuition that they could explain?
I obviously get what it is: apple falls from the tree, etc. And I think I more or less get how it is: Newtonian mechanics, general relativity, curved spacetime, etc.
But I do not get why it is. Why does gravity exist? Why do large accumulations of mass naturally pull other mass toward them? 🧐
One theory I’ve heard is that there’s a universal field, like the Higgs, with particles traveling in all directions and colliding with mass. If you’re near a massive body like a star or planet or moon, it blocks some particles on its side from hitting you, but not from the other side, so the net effect pushes you toward it.
That would make gravity related to volume instead of mass, though, which obviously isn’t right. Still, I don’t remember hearing any other explanations. Does anyone know of any?

Counted tests just now while working on Bridgy Fed, it currently has 814. Expanding to include the whole stack, including granary, arroba, lexrpc, etc, there are 2669 total. (Nice.)

Finally got around to reading Geoff Huston’s comprehensive, heartbreaking eulogy for DNSSEC. He takes the thought-provoking position that TLS has largely subsumed the need for DNSSEC – not perfectly, and with a somewhat different threat model, but still. Great networking neckbeard reading, as always.

Feels a bit harsh – legacy software projects do much of the heavy lifting that makes the world go ’round – but I guess still a useful term. Maybe.

One of our cats purrs so loudly that it’s a running joke in our family. It makes her fur vibrate. We have to turn the TV volume up when she sits with us. Once, she was in another room, and I heard her purr through the wall. No joke.

You know how, when you leave your car in the sun with the windows closed, and then you come back, it’s hot and stuffy and feels like a sauna?
I love that feeling.
Maybe because I run cold in general, maybe because it reminds me of my childhood growing up in LA. Who knows. My wife and kid hate it; I love it. 🤷

Morning all. Quite a day yesterday, and today so far. I’m obviously taking a beating from everyone who thinks the Bluesky bridge should be opt in. OK.
I want to run one idea by you all. The way the bridge is currently designed, no fediverse profiles or other content are proactively bridged into Bluesky. If someone on Bluesky wants to see or follow someone on the fediverse, they have to manually request it on the bridge. That fediverse user’s posts are then only bridged going forward, and only if someone follows them.
What if, the first time someone on Bluesky requests to follow someone on the fediverse via the bridge, the fediverse user gets prompted, “X from Bluesky wants to follow you. Are you ok with connecting with Bluesky?”, maybe via DM. I assume that would still be considered opt in?
Realistically, most people in the fediverse will never hear about the bridge. Traditional opt in and opt out both generally expect people to proactively find a setting or take some action, often one that only a tiny fraction of people ever learn about. I don’t really care how many people discover or use the bridge, but this kind of just-in-time prompt, only shown when someone wants to follow or interact with them, feels like a useful improvement in that it puts the decision in front of them directly.
Thanks to @kio for the idea. It seems promising; I’m now planning to try it out well before launch. Let me know if you don’t like it.

Fediverse! I’ve been building a bridge to Bluesky, and they’re turning on federation soon, which means my bridge will be available soon too. You’ll be able to follow people on Bluesky from here in the fediverse, and vice versa.
Bluesky is a broad network with lots of worthwhile people and conversations! I hope you’ll give it a chance. Only fully public content is bridged, not followers-only or otherwise private posts or profiles. Still, if you want to opt out, I understand. Feel free to DM me at @[email protected] (different account than this one), email me, file a GitHub issue, or put #nobridge in your profile bio.
A number of us have thought about this for a while now, we’re committed to making it work well for everyone, and we’re very open to feedback. Thanks for listening. Feel free to share broadly.

Saw Cirque du Soleil’s Kooza last night. It was great. But the one act of theirs I’ll never forget was from over a decade ago: Lara Jacobs’s Balance Goddess in Amaluna. Didn’t feel like a circus act at all; it was quiet, meditative, haunting. Started simply, balancing a few palm ribs on each other, but by the end of it, she’d constructed an elaborate maze of them, from tiny to massive, perfectly and impossibly hanging in midair, defying all known physics. Otherworldly. One of the most incredible things I’ve ever seen.

2024-01-26 17:21:25 GMT

Daaamn. Reading Meditations, this jumped out at me:
Thou must hasten therefore; not only because thou art every day nearer unto death than other, but also because that intellective faculty in thee, whereby thou art enabled to know the true nature of things, and to order all thy actions by that knowledge, doth daily waste and decay: or, may fail thee before thou die.
To paraphrase:
Sure, hurry up and do stuff before you die, but that’s not enough. You’ll run out of strength and get dementia way before that. So hurry up even more!
Hoo boy. This is not the chill, everything’s fine, don’t stress, Zen style Stoicism I was promised. 😆

Nothing has made me feel more like a graybeard recently than seeing people use “the internet” to mean social networking, or what people are saying to each other online, instead of the series of tubes and hardware and software that carry data packets from one networked device to another.
I know, I know. Language evolves, words mean what we mean them to mean, literally no longer means literally. All this is Good and Right and The Way Of The World.
Still though. You young whippersnappers, get off my lawn, uphill in the snow both ways.

Bridgy Fed now supports all web sites! You can now use it from the fediverse to see and follow any site, regardless of whether it has microformats2, webmentions, or WebFinger. Bridgy Fed extracts as much profile info as it can, generates fediverse posts from Atom and RSS feeds, and so on.
Web sites start out bridged to the fediverse as [domain]@web.brid.gy. For example, to see new nature.com articles in your fediverse feed, follow @[email protected]. And as always, if you have a web site, you can upgrade Bridgy Fed to use its domain in its fediverse handle, like mine at @[email protected].
(I’ve loved seeing other similar bridges recently too, including @[email protected]‘s RSS Parrot and @[email protected]‘s pi-activitypub-server. We’re all pulling in the same direction!)
This is one more step toward making Bridgy Fed support people wherever they are, on any network, fully bidirectionally. Stay tuned for more!

This plank in Die Partie Bundesverband’s platform is amazing. My non-existent interest in politics is suddenly renewed.
11 Beer price cap
The PARTEI is committed to a nationwide beer price cap and the strengthening of the ordering principle. For this purpose, a beer price index is collected. The brake comes into force as soon as two indicators appear somewhere in the economy at the same time: great thirst and a verifiable empty glass jar rate. In preparation: kebab price brake (3 euros)

Web 1.0, Web 2.0, and web3 are “the hosted web, the posted web, and the signed web.”
Heard this quote from Jay Graber for the first time today, via the DWeb Digest. Concise, elegant, poetic. For a straight ahead functional description, it’s got a surprising amount of soul.

Wow. Never thought I’d see the day that Mickey Mouse would lose his copyright and enter the public domain, but it’s finally happened. The internet may have long since moved on to newer, stranger battles, but the old graybeard hell of copyright wars has finally frozen over. Truly the end of an era.
