like, batching is the devil. you know what doesn't have to batch? the CPU. you tell it to do thing, and shockingly it just immediately does thing
also, wanna do a readback of your framebuffer? no problem! it's just memory! reading it is as cheap as writing it! no synchronization required, no gpu stalls involved

well for one, i dont have materials at the moment
but i started making a materials file but then i realized that if something has a gold material but is translucent or a gold material that is opaque or a gold material that is both, those should not be separate materials

someone asked to see it in motion so i made a video
i just edited the model shader so everything that isn't a full block is gold so things look a bit weird. and the grass is shell textured so those are just horizontal planes

also all of this only reduces fps from 310 to 270. and 30 of those lost 40 fps are just from rendering the back view environment map, which you could turn off if you have a slow computer and you'd still get the metallic material effects just without the reflections
so i'd say this is very potato-proof

the really nice part is that the environment reflections, overlayed matcap, and blur are all composited in the fragment shader so i can control how strong the blur is and what matcap is overlayed and even how strong the reflections are

ok i've fixed the reflections and all artifacts and discontinuities and this is what i've got
it also works in the dark, i reduce the matcap's speculars by the overall luminance of the scene
and it's even got makeshift mirrors :D (also yes all the grass and plants are gold, just roll with it)

decided to add a blur, and i decided to use @npub1hkl…9agh's one sample blue noise blur (https://www.shadertoy.com/view/XsVBDR) which is a really performance friendly little blur
it has this grainy effect that i actually kinda like and feel adds to the metallicness

ok i got one to work and in the process of getting rid of unnecessarily expensive math operations (atan2 and asin) i accidentally seem to have come up with an almost exact replica of asin for the range 0 to 1 >_>

i juiced up the crude carpentry table: now it drops the items you craft, and materials involved in the crafting get a little animation. also it now shows the quantities of materials when you mouse over the crafting station for convenience
next is adding more items/recipes to the table to finish it out
i'm also gonna give splitting block game development into shorter (bi)weekly threads a shot. we'll see how that goes

after many, *many* refactors the recipe picker popup is now in, which means that crafting stations in block game in general are now complete!

My contribution to the game difficulty debate is I made an SMB3 style platformer with a mode where dying simply pops you back up immediately on a flying cloud and with cheats beyond that
Just like I made a turnbased roguelike with a mode that gives you infinite lives, which also has a cheat menu

nerdsniped myself into thinking about distant terrain LoDs. you can read the full exploration of the subject in this thread (https://mastodon.gamedev.place/@eniko/115609446120694951) but the conclusion is that it's doable, storing the LoDs for a map the size of gta5 or botw would only take about 350 megabytes of disk space

just realized. since block game's terrain is going to be finite*, i could conceivably solve the distant terrain issue by simply slowly generating all of the chunks (and LoDs) in the background over time 🤔
also i could only store visible faces to reduce storage, since at distance you don't exactly need to know about blocks that are inside walls

you can now interact with objects in the world in block game, which means you can tell the carpentry table to craft the currently selected recipe by pressing E
once i add the recipe picking dialog window basic crafting mechanics for the game will be done

more refactoring today as the spaghetti code governing use (left click) and interact (E) behavior and getting the hint text got too much for me and i had to clean it up
all the left click stuff is unified properly now using proper left click behavior classes and entity events, next is interact

ok! now when you add crafting components to the carpentry table you can see them on the table in the world! well, up to a pile of 3 anyway >_>

added block entities and an item input component which can filter items. then i added a new click behavior that adds items into an item input, so now i can put rough wood, sticks, and cordage into the carpentry table
no screenshot because it doesn't visually show the inputs yet, that's a tomorrow task. you'll be able to see the wood, sticks, and cordage lying on the table after you add them by left clicking

ok i've finally reworked all my block code so that i can have more complex blocks with data stored outside the standard block array, and i've fixed all the bugs that caused

added flint knife and cordage, which you get from using a knife on flamereeds
this means all the components for the crude carpentry table (rough wood, sticks, cordage) are in place and i can start working on that next

added the crude carpentry table, block game's first proper crafting station, which will pave the way to many pieces of furniture and building blocks
i also added a sub-text line to the hint window and it now shows how many items will be crafted as well as how many items are required/will be consumed

making more complex recipes that require a certain quantity of source or target items to craft, so i made it so the hint text tells you if you could craft an item but have insufficient materials

i added actually putting picked up items in your inventory but got sick and never posted it

OK people are telling me, well you use alpha to coverage and that works with msaa
But alpha to coverage is a fixed pattern so if you have two 50% alpha surfaces overlapping you'll only ever see one of them
And that's not stochastic at all that's just regular screendoor transparency with all the problems that the stochastic part is supposed to solve. I don't understand

i mean i don't really understand how stochastic screendoor transparency interacts with msaa though. seems to me like if you're probablistically discarding in the fragment shader based on alpha then with msaa it would either keep or discard all the samples? so that wouldn't help?
