At one time in my career I was regularly at technical conferences. That's changed and I'm at my first in-person tech event of the year, at #APIDaysLondon
I'm also giving the first public talks for the year (tomorrow), let's hope I remember how that goes!!

@nprofile…2q04 I tried to talk about this the other day and ended up at "reduce, reuse, recycle" whole trying to remember their names - which is a different set of words but could also be applicable!

@nprofile…f2dr we were talking about the Kraken data display earlier at #oggcamp and it turns out it's a public dashboard https://dashboard.kraken.tech/

@nprofile…2q04 I love this! I have many happy memories of popping in for various events and coworking with you all. What an impressive list of projects.

@nprofile…2d25 the real irony is that I mostly write shell type scripts in python now. I do still use a Makefile in any project where I can't be overruled about that sort of choice though

@nprofile…2d25 what scares me is that there are people paid to work on software who think that bash scripting is some kind of old magic.

I resisted giving an information security lecture in the changing room at the swimming pool but really. Teenage girls, one in the shared space and one in a changing cubicle 10 yards away. “He never said that?” “He did, he chatted me! Where’s my phone?” “It’s out here. What’s your password?” “222222”

Why are there so few women in the tech industry? If you think you know the answer, read the report https://wearetechwomen.com/2025-lovelace-report/ and then tell me if you were right? Then share it with a friend or colleague. #linkTuesday

Today we had to say goodbye to Orbit the cat. He came to us needing a temporary home when he was 2.5 years old, and lived to be 20! A handsome creature, but it must be said that he was not the sharpest tool in the box!! We'll miss our little friend but it was time. Sleep well, puss.

It’s new job time! Yesterday was my first day with https://www.tmforum.org/ where I’ll be helping publish Open API standards (described by OpenAPI, I know it’s confusing!) that can be adopted across industries.
First impressions: Enterprise software tools are a very different world!

At the risk of stating the obvious, please do state the obvious! In two separate meetings this week it seemed like someone was arguing against a proposed change and in both cases, they were actually very supportive of the idea, and had already moved on to talk about what else could be done. Stop. Express your support (you can thank the suggester if you like!) so that it's clear, and THEN you can build on the original suggestion.
In both cases, we nearly ended up not doing the original thing!

First has to be @nprofile…q04p which I have had for years as a hosted service from @nprofile…yp5j
Pretty sure I'm not using more than about 5% of the features of this one but my use case as a dropbox replacement and occasional file upload/download thing is brilliantly well served across my weird platform selection (iOS/Android/Linux).

This is your regular reminder that open source, self-hosting tools are great AND you don't actually have to host them yourself most of the time! Plenty of great companies offer these tools as a paid-for service - exactly like the subscriptions you have on those other platforms, except more ethical.
I'll share my favourites in the thread - please add yours!

How does your calendar look on Wednesday? Join us for the online OpenUK digital meetup at lunchtime. I've pinned down two open source project maintainers from projects you might have heard of (Kubernetes and PHP) to get their open source stories and some advice that the rest of us can use! See you there https://www.meetup.com/openuk/events/306591774/?eventOrigin=home_next_event_you_are_hosting

What are you using for CI with your @nprofile…8x0h repositories? I don't really want to self-host but if there are hosted providers (especially with a free tier for my tiny project but not a requirement), I'd love recommendations.

As a user of many uncool technologies, I really appreciated this article about Contempt Culture from @nprofile…ecuj - a great article with a thoughtful message about how we can be the change we want to see in our own communities https://blog.aurynn.com/2015/12/16-contempt-culture #linkTuesday

Speakers: If you have a weird "cut" on the start of your #FOSDEM video recording, tell the video server that it the video starts too late. The next version the video server sent me had much better source video (all three talks I gave had this problem, I assume others might as well - but don't panic!)
I love my annual interaction with the FOSDEM video servers!

It’s #fosdem travel day! 🚶‍♀️🚅🚅🚅🚇🚇🚶‍♀️ I’m looking for work so talk to me about #DevTools, #APIs, and #DevEx and let me know if there are people I should be meeting!

Added a Wallabag integration to FeedBin and overwhelmed myself with "to-read" articles, in a wonderful way :) Moving away from having all my data in someone else's services has been a great catalyst for refreshing my whole tools setup!

Calling the Yorkshire/Leeds people: I'm speaking at Leeds PHP about OpenAPI on Wednesday evening, please come along if you can! https://lrnja.net/409LDNJ

2025-01-10 12:02:12 GMT

If you generate your OpenAPI files, or just want to polish them, you think you can't edit them because they'll be regenerated. Good news: you can save your edits as an Overlay and Speakeasy have some tools that make this easy in both the user-friendly sense and the automatable sense!
Check out the blog post I wrote (and then had to edit before I even published it when they shipped more tools) https://lrnja.net/3C4NLOU

Today I'm trying out some new developer tools, but it's hard going because most of those little "copy" buttons on code samples aren't actually links, so my accessibility tooling can't click on them. Do me a favour: open your own documentation, and see if you can tab to the "copy" button on your code samples? If you can, go ahead and brag about it. If you can't, please change it so you can! #a11y #devtools

@nprofile…dhpg My big question is why aren't more people paying attention to developer onboarding, especially if they run a growing company? I've seen exactly one company that does this well.

In my quest to try to own the things I buy, VLC on ipad is playing my mp3 files (from a CD I own) from the house server. Funny how subversive that feels in a world of subscriptions! My weekend project will be adding my bandcamp purchases to the server.
This is what the resistance looks like, folks.

Who has your data and what are they doing with it? TechCrunch are offering some constructive advice on alternative tools - and where to find them as a service if you don't want to self-host! https://lrnja.net/3Z9KpkS #linkTuesday I'm already a Nextcloud convert and in the middle of a migration to Wallabag, and I'd like to try FreshRSS too!

Running test suites and remembering why I bought a powerful laptop instead of a beautiful one! #thinkpad (this one is a P14s, it GOES and while I don't stream any more, I think I could do that AND run the test suites on this machine!)
