Agreed. I am just finishing a book called "Unceded" which is a detailed history of BC's aboriginal land title issues. It has deepened my understanding of just how unfairly the tribes in the province were treated (even more so than the rest of Canada, which wasn't great to start), but also left me consistently wondering if current-day actions can actually heal much besides the guilty consciences of some of the settler's descendants.
There was another thing that struck me: in each decade since the mid-1800s, there was someone in the power structure strongly advocating for the land rights of the natives. At the time, they were ridiculed or ignored. Viewed from 100-170 years later, they are the only voices that seem sane. It makes me wonder, in today's struggles around tech asymmetry and power imbalances, which point of views will seem obviously right to those from the future? Will the grandchildren of the AI colonizers feel guilt over the history of how their ancestors systematically took their homes and stripped them of the ability of earning a living and feeling the value of their labor?
I think history shows us that that is where this all goes: those made wealthy from the abundance of a new frontier never share that wealth with all. Elon's dream of abundance and not having to work is moronic. I bet the masses will be packed into tiny digital reservations where the ravages of disease, addiction, and despair will erase our numbers.
Anyways, I am trying to learn from history. Maybe I'm way off the mark.

Not totally true: many states allow a path to trade licensing without attending trade school. I worked as an electrician trainee for three years, learned everything on the job, then tested out. If XRP has such a good ledger, why would companies/banks/individuals choose to use it over one that is truly decentralized and permission-less? I'm not sure how they make a better case to be used as a value transfer mechanism over Bitcoin. It seems to me that it will continue to trend down over time in BTC terms.

I agree with the conclusion that robots being able to accomplish generalized high-skill trades work is a long way off, however, I think the heuristic doesn't work. There Roomba is like a narrow intelligence, say Deep Blue playing chess. Deep Blue beat Kasparov in 1996. Going on 20 years and still no AGI. So, I don't think that if someone solves for a great Roomba that signals tradesmen robots are around the corner.
I think about this a lot. I am an electrician, mostly working on residences. I would love to be able to hire an assistant bot. But the amount of adaptation that is needed for the specific puzzle of each job seems tough to solve for on the cognitive side. Even more so, the physical side, moving through crawl spaces and crawling over attic rafters, seems very far away for robots. Maybe bots that work in commercial settings building conduit in warehouses that are wide open, but homes have some tight spaces that wires run through!

I'm not sure where anything I have will go in the future. I have to think about that.
It sounds like you believe children are the only way to contribute forward. Is that the case? Why is money moving forward the only aspect you bring up? Plato, Davinci, Newton, Whitman, Poe... none had children, but wouldn't you agree that their contributions still echo through history? Tesla died penniless and never had a child, yet you are likely sitting in a building lit and heated by his legacy.
I'm not saying I am even close to the level of those people, but I do think there are plenty of other ways to use a life to be of service to others and contribute things that will last far beyond my years.

Good on you both for doing that. You know why it is important.
I was not saying kids and caring are incompatible. I was saying that we have been able to fill a role that not only helps our parents, but also eases the burden on my siblings. Kids were not part of my life trajectory, but family has still been a source of deep meaning.

2025-01-18 21:17:06 GMT

- reply

I agree, it does have more weight if you start your own family. But not everyone takes that route, and that is okay too. Not every person has the same path to meaning. I think the important thing is that as someone without children, I recognize and honor those who do, as they are doing something beautiful. It wasn't my path, but I support it. I'm not one of those idiot DINKs on social media trying to brag about how smart and free I am for not having kids. Those people are truly childish.

My wife deals with some tough anxiety issues, especially around taking care of pets, food prep, etc. So that was one thing that made us reluctant.
We also spent years working as leaders at an at-risk youth program. We met some parents who definitely were the reason their kids were struggling, but we also met really good parents who were dealt an incredibly rough hand. I think that put us off the idea of kids, just knowing that you could get a life-wrecking experience even if you did everything right.
I'll be honest, I do wish I had children sometimes. My niece is an incredible source of joy in my life, and I can't imagine how much greater that joy would be if I had a child of my own.
But, we are in our late forties, and that window has passed us by. I try to find other ways to be of service to others to find that meaning. Isn't that the real reason kids are so amazing? Being presented with a ton of motivation to give of yourself on their behalf... having something more important than yourself? I have to find that in other ways. It's tough, but doable.

2025-01-18 14:10:23 GMT

Most of these replies focus on the "children" part of your post. I think the "family" end can provide ample meaning in life as well. My wife and I do not have children. That was a choice we made for many solid reasons, and I would not change it. However, I am surrounded by friends/ coworkers/ / siblings that have children and I absolutely see how their lives have more meaning... at times I envy that.
However, although we have no children, we have taken care of my wife's father at the end of his life, and that was a deeply meaningful experience. We plan on moving halfway across the US in a couple years to do the same for her mother, then again for my parents (all in different states). We can only do this because we don't have children, but we seek to serve the elderly in our family. It brings meaning to my life. Sure, different than children, but meaning non the less.

It is plausible that the market cycles could break in an unexpected way, like 4 green years instead of 3, but then 2 year bear and not nearly as deep of a dip. The larger pools of money required to push the price up from here are working on longer timelines, they move at a slower pace than we are used to. That could really catch people out. I'm not going to slow down, too much of a risk that nation states actually get involved and the price just teleports to a new level and never dips back to where I was buying at before it happens. That is not my base-case, but it there is a non-zero chance.
I used to just dump any spare fiat into bitcoin as soon as I had it. So many times I would have been better off just setting a plan and not looking, would have gotten more sats. I was letting fomo guide me.
I've finally come to place where I can let the DCA ride, but have a little on the side for dips. Helps me scratch that itch when the market drops, but still do the more rational long-term strategy of buying the market a bit each week.

1: There is no audience to "own", only other people to communicate with. If you say something interesting/useful/enjoyable, other people may choose to zap you. Simple, clean, ethical.
2: There is no need for "closer channels". You already have a direct channel to people who follow you. So, individuals can provide value for value and middlemen like you @npub1kje…4x4r are irrelevant.

We are also going to be blamed for it even if it is a slow collapse. Whomever is doing well at the time gets the blame, just like what is happening now with fiat billionaires. They did not create the broken system, just saw the loopholes and levers to play it to their advantage. We see the system for what it is and understand how Bitcoin is an honest antidote. The normies only understand that the price of eggs and gas went up, and dammit it is unfair! They will be coming with the torches and pitchforks, so we better double down on educating people before the collapse happens.
