The poor dogs are now dealing with a thunderstorm! The humans are obviously fine but Finnegan can't figure out why we aren't more upset! Zoe (the Labrador) is doing fine too, lol. A big boom hit and I had to move from my chair to the couch so the little guy can be in my lap. Poor Finn! I can feel his heart beating against my leg.

Hey hey #artist friendos, I like to note when I get great customer service (in this age of increasingly icky corporate interactions), and I just had a wonderful exchange with Jade from Toms Studio. She helped me with a problem I was having and offered great solutions.
A couple years ago I switched from using Microns to their refillable Lumos pen, and love it. I just got their pocket fountain pen with the Architect nib, and it's WONDERFUL.

Do you have a favorite blurring app for iOS or Mac OS? I'd like to post more of my art, but much of it lives in art journals with personal journaling. I'd like an easy way to blur the often very-irregularly-shaped sections of text.
I'm using Skitch here, it seems to have worked okay but it bulked it up to a 20 MB png, yowza. Are there better options?

The deeply #neurodivergent wish for there to be some kind of social signal or hand gesture (or emoji, in text) to add to a question, signaling that one is sincerely asking for understanding about something (that is maybe obvious to others), in a way that means, "Explain this to me like I'm from another planet. I'm not trolling, mocking, or playing the wise ass (despite past data, lol)."
Maybe I just learn the ASL for "earnest" and then insert that when needed. And hope it catches on. :)

Went to breakfast this morning, we haven't been out in ages and we were hoping it would be mostly empty, and it was!
Jupiter drew in their sketchbook, I doodled in mine - I've started folding over a few pieces of watercolor paper and sticking them in my Traveler's Notebook, and then it creates a signature to bind a book together later. I still love making books but (maybe weirdly) I like to make them as I need them.

I dunno if anyone remembers this but about six months ago my friend Katie adopted a “failed” bomb sniffing dog named Ethos. She had been exited from the program because she didn’t like loud noises. (No joke)
She and Katie became immediate best friends and now Ethos enjoys a life of endless treats, cuddles, and gets to take nose work classes (at which she totally excels).
Anyway, Merry Christmas from the cutest career-changing Labrador in the South!🎄

Hey hey friends who get #migraines, can you please share your favorite tips? I seem to be getting a new condition, lolsob. I think it's likely hormonal (i.e. peri/menopause).
Right now things that help are: sometimes caffeine (sometimes that backfires), Tylenol (Advil does little), that headache music I mentioned before, getting off screens and away from bright lights and noise, rest, or VERY gentle movement (like slow zen-walking around the house).
What works for you? (boosts welcome!)

Had to run an errand today that involved navigating what I consider to be one of the worst intersections in the city - it's between two shopping areas and just slow and clogged and everyone is always grumpy.
Two people were standing OUT IN THE RAIN, making giant bubbles that would float into the intersection and interact with everyone. It was total magic.

All I want is a few acres of forest and spaces for my favorite people to each have a tiny home. And paths that go between the houses. Far enough so you aren’t looking in but close enough so that evening Rummy games and impromptu 80’s dance parties can happen organically.
Also the paddock for the rescued horses. Don’t worry, I’ll take care of those.
I know I mention this every few months but it’s because I really want it to happen and maybe if I keep mentioning it, it will.

Okay so I know the world is <waves hands at everything> but do you want to hear a good story? Me, whose life has shrunk to getting out of the house only for doctor’s appointments, who has panic attacks getting groceries, that me - that me just went to Tsunami books and watched Kevin Burke play the fiddle for two hours and it was pure unadulterated bliss, and I had nary a wobble, I was as steady as an old mare in a meadow. The WHOLE TIME. I haven’t felt this much like my old self in a decade. 🤯🎉🎉

AuDHD and dyscalculia are a difficult mix when knitting. Following a regular pattern can be stressful, I tend to lose my place easily.
So I used @npub1rld…yspy to fix it! I put my favorite sock pattern into a template that, when printed, fits perfectly into my Traveler's Notebook that's always with me. Only the numbers for my size (so I don't mistake other sizes for mine). Checkboxes so I always know exactly where I'm at.

I’ve been organizing music today, into static playlists for use with an MP3 player.
It’s astounding how good this task feels, to break away from streaming services and go back to my own collection of music, algorithm-free and played on a device that isn’t collecting my data in order to exploit me.
I’m not at all being facetious when I say that it feels healing. I love analog but I don’t need analog everything. I want the tech I do use to feel like a tool, not a compromise with the Death Star.

You know how TV characters are always like “zoom in here” as they point to some low res video, which then magically magnifies until you can see a person’s pores?
Well, I’m watching a show, and one person points to the screen where another is sitting at a computer, playing security footage from a convenience store. She asks for a zoom in and the guy says, “I’m afraid our technology does not have that capability,” and I practically screamed in triumph at the technical correctness of this. 😂

I thought it was like 😂 but just LESS. Like the difference between a chuckle and a guffaw, and yes I laugh a lot and there are gradations.

I spent a lot of time looking through Traveler's Journals and assorted accoutrements yesterday, which included a lot of brass - brass pens, brass clips, brass rulers, etc.
There was so much talk of "it will take on a nice patina" - everyone loves a good patina.
Hey did we ever consider that AGING also gives us, humans, a nice patina? My little brass fountain pen is more beautiful for its age. It also smells a little weirder. But that's aging too. Let's just embrace the whole thing.

Thirty years ago today I put on more tulle than should really be allowed and married this nerd (whom some of you know as @npub1tn7…juss), who I still have a bonkers huge crush on. 🥰
I look at these photos and just - GAPE at our youth. We were 21 and 22. Our kids are right now 20 and 23. Can I imagine either of those total babies getting married? How did anyone let us get married that young, lol?

A woman just found him and brought him to our door to ask if he's ours. I grabbed my phone to call animal control and she mosied on home, so now we're waiting for an animal control person to come pick him up.

So I have one bike, an electric assist bike, and as I've shared here, I'm saving up for a #Rivendell next spring (non-electric, regular bike).
Hubby has teased me this is too many bikes, and I've said, "Dude, you have no idea how bike people get, be grateful I'm only thinking of two," and it led to us guesstimating how many people have more than one bike. I said over 30%, he thinks 1-2%.

They played something tonight, I was busy making soup and didn’t get the name of it. When I came over to check, they’d put Cal’s box on my chair, and he stood up and reached out a paw and was trying to pull my hand down for scritches. It was so sweet and so bossy. How is he this charming? The older he gets the more I love him. Cal is going to make a cat person out of me.

I went looking in mah stuffs for something to make me laugh, and I found it: this video I took a few weeks ago when my friend and I were having lunch.
The dinos appeared, walked past us (waving at us I think, we were the only people facing them) and then dino-waddled to the other side of the cafe where they have other outdoor tables. We heard some loud Happy Birthday singing, then they reappeared and walked back to their car. It was so great!

Honestly one of the great joys of Fedi for me has been finding other neurodivergent folks to swap stories with, and share encouragement.
For so many years I felt so alone with that stuff. It seemed like "everyone" was just doing fine and I was the only one struggling with these seemingly basic things.
To tell a silly anecdote and have a dozen people go, "Also, my brain!" is meaningful in such important ways. It may seem like just a little social media interaction, but it's much more.

I finally re-found a website I lost years ago! "What is Orange? Exploring Watercolor Mixes as a Fundraiser for Racial Justice," is a wonderful #watercolor reference for color mixing, including a great guide to mixing different skin tones using common pigments found in most palettes.
I love this site and had bought her guide ages ago, and through the magic of ADHD, managed to lose it.

We're in Oregon and just got the new Covid shots! Here's how:
1. Our doc's clinic wants EVERYONE to be vaccinated, regardless of health status. We asked, they sent two prescriptions for the new vaccine to our local CVS pharmacy.
2. We made appointments with CVS for a FLU SHOT. If you choose Covid and you aren't 65yo, the website will say you aren't eligible.
3. Arrive, point them to your prescription, they'll cheerfully give you BOTH.

That watercolor paper I spent two hours tearing up off the roll, then placed under stacks of books and weights to de-curl it and left it there, an entire WEEK AGO?
All that removed only about 50% of the curl. 😅 And yeah we flipped it partway through. So yeah I don’t think I’ll be buying watercolor paper rolls anymore. I’ve still got the one other Arches roll downstairs to deal with.

Last night I joined a new community for neurodivergent folks, doing the free trial. I left when I realized I didn't like the UX. But more importantly, the cost is $30/month, and will soon go up to $50/month.
This is REALLY bugging me. A "community" should not cost anyone $360-$600 a year. I'm ok with $1-5/month to support infrastructure; I think that can be a meaningful gesture.
But we have to find a different, better way to organize and care for each other (literally why I'm on the Fedi!).

Three good things:
1. Have gone for three morning walks this week! I stop and draw flowers - e.g. these gorgeous hydrangea(s?)! So far no one has stared at me while I do this. Much.
2. Jupiter helped me clean and reorganize the mantel tonight, which now (thanks to Greg digging in some old boxes) FINALLY has my huge 8x12 framed photo of me hugging Edward James Olmos. Because that's very important.
3. In 27 minutes it's July 31st and I'm 51. :)

Entered the drive-thru of Human Bean this morning. I've been trying to drive a little every day, to ease some entrenched car anxiety (it's helping!).
In line, we sat for ages because a person two cars ahead was ordering....something big? Who knows. When we got to the window, found out that person had paid for our coffee! The barista, she was BEAMING when she told me. I was so touched. I paid for the person behind us. Barista beamed more.
She said, "Everyone is so nice today!"

Garden joys: my ladybug is back, we chatted! She didn’t have a lot to say. The yellow flower is a real stunner! No idea what it’s called, let’s name it Yellow Flower.
The cardoon is once again 8 feet high and the bees are all over it like jam on toast (that means our hummingbird must be around here somewhere). I walk carefully around the bumblebarrons but they’re so busy rooting around in the big purple thistles that I’m not sure they even register my presence.
