Thinking I'm going to be changing to a different account name. Same server, but a different account name. I've long used my name on various accounts and my own website but with things as they are in the US I'm taking steps to reduce the most obvious exposure and easy access to my identity.
I've felt very conflicted on this. On the one hand, I've always been open about my activism and beliefs online and in my community. But having my name hard-coded as the actual account name that I can't easily change seems like an unnecessary risk given where things are in the US and where they seem to be headed. What risk is acceptable?
That said, I have no illusions about being anonymous. That's not my intent. I've been publishing on the internet for nearly 30 years. I still have a blog that I intend to keep. But I have been taking measures to gradually scrub my name, location, etc from the most obvious places just as an added layer of obfuscation.

In 100% agreement especially with her concluding statement at the end of the interview.
For better or worse, it seems increasingly likely that the US as the dominant power on the planet is coming to a close. I'm not sure what to say about China being that new power but the US has been blocking climate progress for decades and under the current regime it's clear US policy is now a double down in the wrong direction.
Between increasing climate related disruption and geopolitics and economics, just, shit. This just looks like an intensifying disaster for the planet.

A few other notes about the website:
- Static, hand coded html/css.
- Almost no javascript. I think at this point, the only javascript is the jotform links.
- The html for most pages come in at under 15kb. Even with images our site loads up fast even on slow rural internet.
At this point all of my sites are accessible though they could all use improvement. I'm still learning. You don't know what you don't know.
And they're all hand coded to be efficient and quick to load. Almost 100% free of javascript. The last thing I need to do over the next year or two is to get them all free of Google fonts. A mistake I made years ago.

2026-02-12 16:06:56 GMT

I'm not a website accessibility expert but I've been learning the past few months and as of a week ago I've got our local rural regional library's website up to a solid result according to the IBM Accessibilty Checker extension for Mozilla. There are still some improvements to be made but we're getting there.
The last time I looked there were no other Missouri sites even close to passing which is a shame. Frankly, very few websites I've checked pass.
Also, look at all the cool stuff my local library does! Use your local library and volunteer if you can. I can think of no other social space as important as a #library in a society that strives for continuing #education, #learning #literacy, #democracy and anything resembling #freedom.

100% this. But also as it pointed out in the video, the United States is not a #democracy, is not democratic, it is not governed by the people. This is by design, and this has been the case for the entirety of the nation's existence I've mentioned Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States several times recently as I'm reading through it, and I will continue to recommend it. It makes pretty clear, what is also pointed out in this linked essay, the details are there decade after decade after decade. The political process of the United States, the two party system, this is not democracy, it is a fucking sham and always has been. Is a system designed by the wealthy for the wealthy.

This is not about getting back to some previous normal. The previous normal was too shit to return to. We've known for awhile that the core was weakening, that it was rotting, that we were neglecting it. This is about building something new.
We use the crisis they are causing against them. We use their attempt to subjugate us against them. Like our loving brothers and sisters in MN we extend our empathy outward, we embrace one another and build action based in solidarity and love.
Our future should not be about what we can tuck behind a picket fence and in a two car garage in a comfortable middle class suburban home.
Our future is our resistance to their attempts to subjugate us. Our future is our resistance to their attempt to make us afraid.
Our future is our ability to confront our long history of genocide, subjugation, white supremacy and injustice. This crisis is an opportunity for transformation. They started something that we should finish.

- Start planning with your neighbors and your co-workers now
- Organize neighborhood planning meetings, potlucks in homes, and assemblies
- Learn from the love and bravery of those in MN. Be inspired, learn, act
- Make room in and around your home for people that need help during extended protests and work outages
- Build personal and neighborhood capacity
- Start saving money for mutual aid
- Start building personal and community food storage for extended disruption
- Develop neighborhood communication, face-to-face and using Signal

- Immediate cancellation of contracts with any military, intelligence, or security agency in any nation
- Immediate cancellation of contracts with ICE and DHS specifically

- Agreements to worker and citizen advisory councils to begin a process of auditing and oversight. What??? Yeah. Push it as far as possible from the exclusive focus on profit at the expense of the public good to a worker-citizen based process.

In the months leading up to May 1, 2026 let's build a GLOBAL #BOYCOTT. People can begin now, pledge to delete their accounts at the major US tech platforms:
- #Amazon
- #Google
- #Meta
- #Microsoft
- #Apple
Imagine for a minute, what that looks like! The lead-up to that day and the actual day. If hundreds of millions people, globally, were to actually delete their accounts (or at least stop using them to purchase services).
Those CEOS, those boards and stock holders SHOULD FEAR US. They think themselves isolated from their actions.
We should not just talk shit about them, we should end their companies, we should cut their companies to the ground.
With the internet, is such a thing really so far fetched? For fucks sake, we have the internet.

I would suggest proton.me or tuta.com. Both offer a free account. Proton also offers an encrypted cloud drive service with document features, similar to google docs. Both are based in Europe and are privacy focused. Both offer fairly low-cost email plans for around $4/month. Between the two I'm using Proton a bit more and will be using them in the future.

I came over from the Mac side but the M1 Mac I still have no longer connects to iCloud. I still have a Google account for exactly this reason. Well, and to catch any email from old friends, etc. But 99% of the time it's not used.
That said, I think we should creatively, proactively nudge, prod and agitate when we encounter blocks. Especially what you describe with your town rejecting Proton. I guess it comes down to a pick your battles situation.
One thing I'm doing going forward in relation to contacts and clients that still use Google services is that, where possible, I'm suggesting a switch to Proton and explaining why. Try and try again. I have one such client that continues to use an Apple Numbers document shared via iCloud and a couple documents in Google. I'll keep suggesting otherwise and where possible with that client I'll use Proton instead.
It's a process, we just have to keep trying. 🙂

100% agreed with the sentiment of a boycott of the US.
But, let's acknowledge that the violence of the US started 250 years ago with genocide of the indigenous people of these continents. Then continued in slavery and violent foreign interventions as far back as the 1800s.
Violence and resource theft is a foundational element of US domestic and foreign policy. Trump is just being more open about it. Please, let's be totally honest about this history!
Any boycott, to be honest, needs to go far beyond Trump and acknowledge what came before and what would come after. Trump and his regime is a big red, pussy zit that's rupturing all over itself and everyone else.
Now is the time for a full reckoning with 70+ years of US hegemony. The global community, Northern and Southern nations, have an opportunity to begin a re-balancing of the global order.
A better, more fair and sane world will be one where the US is demoted. No better, no more powerful than any other.

YOU are CHOOSING in part because you don't want to make an effort. It's easier to complain and weakly protest. Americans are really good at this while they avoid any actual action. This is how we got here (hand wavy gesture).
YOU control YOUR COMPUTING. YOU.
Yes, it requires effort. Why not start now with small steps to begin a process to gradually replace Apple Services and apps. Download the #FOSS apps that can replace the Apple's Mac apps:
- LibreOffice to replace Pages, Numbers, Keynote
- Mullvad which better protects your privacy compared to Safari
- Thunderbird for an email client
- Proton to replace iCloud email, calendar, iCloud Drive
- Ente.io for cloud photos and sharing
Don't give up before you try. Your #freedom and #privacy are worth the effort.

A fantastic post that makes an excellent point: Liberty, freedom and computing ethics really do matter. Now more than ever.
And Matt's process of extricating himself is right on. He's doing it gradually, as he suggests, "quiet quitting". SLOW, STEADY. If you're deeply entrenched in Apple services don't quit before you start because it seems too much to do.
Slow, steady steps. In the end, you will be more free.
YOU WILL BE MORE FREE.

Great post. Another Apple user struggling with Tim Cook and the current state of Apple.
As a former long-time user, I get it. 34 years and I was in deep. It takes time, effort and some determination to ESCAPE their maze. Even more difficult if it's a whole family. I suspect that if it can be made into a team effort, it's more doable. It IS a challenge but the outcome is worth it and it leads to greater user freedom which is something we don't think about enough.

Proton has fairly affordable/comparable plans for cloud storage, email, VPN, password management and more. All private and fully encrypted. The Unlimited or Duo (2 users) plans get you the packaged services.

All private and encrypted, based in Europe. I'm using their email. I keep all of my files in my own local cloud but will probably upgrade to the unlimited plan later this year for collaboration with clients.

If Apple-focused YouTubers and podcasters are actually fed up and as disgusted as they often profess to their audiences, they should step over the line and actually call for a boycott. There's no shortage of reasons at this point. Start naming specific grievances, list them out. Repeat them. And use the word boycott over and over.
Move on from criticism. If ever there was a time for #tech media folk to actually take a stand, 2026 is that time. Passive "reporting" helps #Apple. Do better.

It's convenient to think that boycotts don't work because then we can just keep buying whatever we want. But boycotts often do work. As recently as a few months ago pressure was put on Disney for suspending Jimmy Kimmel. But there's a much longer history of very successful boycotts. Ever heard of Rosa Parks?
Of course, Apple's HUGE. Even more reason to stop giving them all the money. No one forces you to buy a new iPhone every other year or subscribe to AppleTV.

Enough complaining. Initiate & organize a campaign.
Make concrete demands. Spitballing:
- Tim Cook's firing
- Demand Apple publicly state opposition to current #ICE actions
- Apple commitments to human rights, democracy and rule of law
Follow with actions against Apple including:
- Consumer boycott
- Store pickets
- Call on Apple employees to organize/make demands from the inside
Make news, shift the conversation rather than let #Apple dictate conversation with their product releases.

If Apple users and developers are really disgusted w/ Cook, here's a thought: Initiate a campaign.
Make concrete demands. Spitballing:
- Boycott campaign with demands starting with Tim Cook's firing
- Demand Apple publicly state opposition to current ICE actions
- Push Apple on commitments to human rights and democracy
- Call on Apple employees to make demands from the inside
Follow with actions against Apple including store pickets and a boycott. Make news, shift the conversation.

I don't disagree but I would add that the problem goes deeper than Tim Cook's disgusting behavior. At least his conduct is out in the open. There's a lot going on with Apple that should have users questioning their continued use of it's products. But let's be honest, it's not just Apple. All of US-based big tech is making user hostile decisions.
#BigTech has been enjoying a free ride for decades because their shiny gadgets have so many enraptured. It's past the time to take a hard look at that.

2026-01-26 19:20:22 GMT

Are #Apple enthusiasts that post about Apple's latest product release also doing free Apple Marketing?
Yes, yes they are.
Connecting the dots (and this isn't that hard), is voluntarily doing marketing for a company who directly supports a fascist regime for favors bootlicking by extension?
Why the fuck would anyone opposed to #fascism and #ICE murders volunteer to do free marketing for a company and CEO (FUCK YOU TIM COOK) engaged in active fascist bootlicking?
Get off your knees.

"The neighbourhood as central to political, social and civic life: It's not a coincidence that we are seeing some of the strongest and most effective rapid response networks in cities like Minneapolis precisely because the ethic of being a good neighbour - despite political differences - still rings true. What many may call mutual aid is basically people looking out for their community members, their neighbours, their teachers, their co-worker, their local street vendor etc. "

Daily steps to building our #resistance into a #GeneralStrike
In the face of extreme daily brutality the folks of Minnesota have been giving the rest of the US a demonstration of how we resist rising #fascism in the US. Anyone can begin taking action to build their personal and community capacity for resistance today. Depending on your location and context, only some of these will apply. Do what you can, do what makes sense in your current context...

That's just the first 3 things we can do to prepare. It's a long list.
I think most important is that we start meeting with our fellow workers and neighbors with the clear intent to prepare long-term resistance action/strategy.
For all the absolute horror, this month of brutality provides us with an opportunity to better organize and prepare. Both sides have demonstrated what is to come, what is to be expected.
The red alarm emergency bell has been rung nation-wide.
#GeneralStrike

2026-01-23 12:22:13 GMT

We'll need much more of this. The people of #Minnesota have been giving the rest of the nation a lesson in how we resist #ICE. This is how we do it. This is the template for how we #Resist.
It's been 1 year of increasing fascism but the horror thus far is just the beginning. At the very least we should expect years of low-intensity civil war.
Prepare for long-term #GeneralStrike:
- Save money
- Set meetings with your neighbors, build block-based #selfdefense
- Get on #Signal, set-up groups

YES. Read Warner's post. This is something I've also been writing about for a very long time. Until we fully reckon with the historical foundations of the United States we will not be free. Our nation is still bound to #genocide, land theft, #settlercolonialism, slavery and violent international interventions. We cannot pretend otherwise. We cannot ignore the fundamental truths of this nation.

100% yes. If we have any chance of stopping this we will need a series of rolling general strikes, widespread, that build into a mesh that shuts it all down. There are many millions of us and we will all be needed to do our part and to do the most we are able.
America is now, and will be after, unrecognizable. We cannot just stop fascism but have to push past the fundamentally unjust farce we've been chest-beating about for 250 years. We have a chance to do better.

All the nice homes of suburban America, the plush carpets, the two car garages filled with cars, extra fridges, boxes of too much stuff, the, the green lawns and strip malls, this is the bribe of comfort, the "reward" and goal of a life of playing by the rules, working hard, etc that white middle class America has been told is the point of life here, the expression of "Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."
It is also the lie that we benefit from #capitalism or that it is natural.

We don't get to pretend these truths away because they are inconvenient or uncomfortable. Our lives are built on them.

We're not supposed to talk about that. That is meant to be left alone because that is a challenge to the ORDER OF THINGS. That is the challenge to the actual, systemic problem that has been lurking for 250 years but for 500+ years since Europeans brought #settlercolonialism to these continents and began their #genocide.
What's the expiration date for justice in regards to the original sin of genocide and land theft that took place here? The sin of slavery?

Something that is not really acknowledged in the #US is that the white middle class has long been a beneficiary of #WhiteSupremacy which also means it serves as a protector of that system. The #Democrats, especially the establishment of that party, know this perfectly well. They are protectors of #neoliberalism and #capitalism and, ultimately #fascism. They will continue to be useless in this fight.
The deep fight, the real #resistance will have to tap into the real #struggle of #ClassWar.

#FASCISM. They will do what they want. The pretense of #democracy, law, etc no longer applies. NEW FUCKING RULES. Elections? Lol. Stop pretending because they no longer are.

2026-01-18 12:09:48 GMT

Agreed 100%. ICE is not the problem. The problem is the latent #fascism that was always lurking behind the facade of democracy.
#Democracy in the US has always been a fucking lie, an illusion put in front of the brutal #capitalist machine built on #genocide, #landtheft, #colonialism and subjugation. The white middle class insistence that democracy was real is an expression of privilege and #whitesupremacy.
250 years of #shame, that is the #US. I encourage you to read Zinn's People's History.

Agreed with the erosion of the #Apple ecosystem. I'm not "almost equally happy" running GNU/Linux, I love using it in a way that previously enjoyed macOS & iPadOS. I don't feel the hardware constraints Rui mentions on a 2018 Thinkpad or on my 2012 Mac Mini. Daily html/css coding, page layout with Scribus, vector work w/ Inkscape are all very fast. Mint Cinnamon on the Thinkpad, Trisquel with KDE Plasma on the Mini is perfectly responsive.

I totally get you on that. The UAW leadership called for this strike in late 2024 in anticipation of what Trump would do. And they're coordinating with other unions across the nation. I'm not a member of the UAW but as I understand it this is the sort of thing that they plan for well in advance to prepare for a long-term work outage.
There's nothing that stops us from carrying out actions between now and then beyond our own ability to prepare for the various likely outcomes.

Decades of a culture focused on consumerism, very passive in terms of activism. Most in the US will avoid confrontation until it's right in their face just as we see in Minnesota. Only then do people begin to understand and act.
Even with that, most folks outside of that zone are currently hoping they won't be required to act. They want to stay in their bubble, scrolling instagram, watching sportsball.
Activism, especially direct action that is viewed as risky is avoided.

As I understand it that GS was called by the president of the United Auto workers in late 2024 in anticipation of what was coming with this regime. As it will involve the UAW as a union and other unions it was also timed to coincide with their ability to coordinate strikes.
None of that is to say that serious actions/strikes cannot be happening before then. They can and should. Obviously, the sooner the better.
Many in the US are NOT prepared for this crisis. Should have been.

- Start a monthly neighborhood assembly meeting to build communication and practice democracy.
- Start specific committees that meet weekly or ass needed to directly address the needs of your neighborhood. Add new committees and needs are identified.
- Committees: Food Security, Medical First Aid, Defense, Transportation, Housing, Community Fund, Communications, Security, Tech

Start a #MutualAid and #SelfDefense block group in your neighborhood. Define roles, jobs, tasks to organize your neighborhood. Establish extra capacity for first aid, improvised housing of people, building both knowledge and supplies of food and medical supplies.
In other words, start long-term community planning and prepping. Coordinate with your neighbors especially those of that share your concerns.
Start now. Begin now. Action leads to action and confidence.
