Why does the linux kernel not automatically warn somehow when RAM OOM is about to happen? Is that really so hard? Or do the applications just launch and say 'sod it, not my problem, let's go' and the OS says 'Not my job to stop anything?' #commerzbank #Mastercard had a glitch and online payments were refused at least yesterday from about 16:00 yesterday 03-07-2026 to today. Two separate vendors declined my card (#Amazon and #Kickstarter). Commerzbank knew yesterday nothing of it and could see no fault. #codeberg no longer works for me. After two pull requests on their website I get
Network error SyntaxError: JSON.parse: unexpected non-whitespace character after JSON data at line 3 column 1 of the JSON data
and then only after waiting e.g. overnight can I no more PRs .
I use codeberg in preference to gitgub on principle, but now I cannot use codeberg effectively any more.
Anyone know what this problem is?

Footnote to above post: The provision of a special forwarding node address as in 6. is only mentioned here because the post wanted to highlight what is needed if immediate guaranteed access is wanted akin to what happens on the normal internet. The provided forwarding node is specially provisioned 24/7 & set up 1 hop away from the repo hosting machine by the repo owner. It acts as its "reticulum ipv4 web access point". In practice the default interface should work eventually but might take time.

@nprofile…mpn6 Thanks. Yes, it should ALL be upstream derivations but the hate campaign against AI generated PRs is so bad I do not do it & make it all local. The flake uses 'parts' so you can pull in just the part/s you want: very handy so you do not need the whole flake & can test before maybe importing/harvesting the nix code The readme is not up to date, sorry. As you can see from the number of commits, even with Claude Code doing the heavy lifting, it is a very long term project to make my #flake.

I am slowly making a mastodon block list or filter that hides posts which cite articles from website that require registration or payment. Ironically it seems that I am just blocking the whole internet... this is not the way it was supposed to be. #nomadnet might well offer an escape route temporarily.

Train in DE again 110 km for 3 people #Bayernticket works out at 74 euros *(3/5) = 44.50 € . My car incl all costs fuel etc. costs 0.40 € per km = 44 € . Again. Every single train ride in DE (not using the special discount cards and monthly / annual tickets) costs identically the same as using a car. This is very strange and cannot be a coincidence and suggests the pricing of #diebahn is not based on their costs but politically motivated decisions.

Using a repo like codeberg and #git for managing a #flake for #nixos that applies for all multiple machines of a fleet each, having their own git branch, using the .#<machine_of_fleet> is really hard. Does anyone do this too? Why is it so hard? For example I have not stopped using #checkout as a command because it makes no sense to me and leads to confusion, and use switch and restore. Also I have made a mental note not to refer to "main" in any operation other than the one master machine. Tips?

@nprofile…p5zg Thanks for the tip. I am trying to do a proper nixos derivation from source of meshchatx and ran into a void on 0.4.6 which is specified as a dependency. Will dig around. Mark Q said that he is not going to release latest versions on GitHub and the github version is 0.4.4. But
0.4.5 seems to be there but not tagged as a release. I am going to flap around with the help of Claude Code to see if I am being dumb and/or stubborn. Will report when things clarify e.g. find what the diff is.

The #lora #rnode #cardputer #m5cardputer #ratcom code 1.9.2 included a fix https://github.com/ratspeak/ratcom/releases/tag/v1.9.2
and flashing from Chrome using the web flasher resulted in the #cardputer working as an #rnode directly with no problem accessing my existing lora #reticulum mesh.

the #reticulum code is to be taken off #github . I was not able to join the discussion as it was locked. I just wanted to say that github is the reference location for code (which is a shame but still fact), and that I am using #radicle as a robust meshed git repo system & #codeberg so no sheep. As mirror repo codeberg/github are ok locations just to get it out & get bootstrapped. To only get the #RNS code over #rngit reticulum itself seem not beginner-friendly.

I think there needs to be an independent channel of communication about the git status of any code obtained from any repo at all to notify if the repo you are seeing is behind the SSOT. I mean a separate infrastructure that is not down just because the access to the SSOT repo is down. Redundant git status channels are needed in my view, including all known peer to peer TCP alternatives. Just ideas.

With the prolonged attack on #Canonical servers still affecting updates, I’ve been wondering whether a system like #radicle could maybe help as a secondary mirror and reduce the impact of outages or attacks. I mirror my Codeberg repo to a Radicle seed node to cope with #Codeberg outages. That does not mean I can push when Codeberg is down. The single-source-of-truth issue is still unclear to me, but downloading a pre-attack version should be possible. Pushing new work during an attack is tricky.

I am trying to update my #nixos flake and discover that #x11 is not supported by the latest #gnome but I also know that some of my hardware (#HPelitedesk800 , VM machines running xrdp and x11spice) fails to show correct windows under #wayland so this is very un-linuxy and I feel like a sort of macos hardware obsolescence vibe ... A patent is more appropriate than copyright (which as the link says does not work when LLM has done the job) because then re-coding in other forms is not going to change the infringement. If the code's technical purpose is patented then the owners of the patent can prevent those who seek to use it in a non-permissive manner from bringing it to market and let those who follow the copyleft philosophy use it for free. Of course patenting each step is too expensive.

Strangely I had more problems when the #reticulum stack was being updated because making things backward compatible and compatible with all #meshchat versions was not really achieved if even possible... so now, with the "maintenance mode", so long as you can indeed flash your radios (plural, use two to at least be able to talk to yourself 😂) everyone will be on the same "page".

1. pull a new flake down into a directory with a new name /flake-new
2. rename the old /flake directory /flake-old
3. rename /flake-new as /flake
4. try nixos-rebuild switch --flake .#<machine_name>

Thanks I think you have solved it.
1. git clone repo → local_machine/flake-new
2. Create local_machine branch from repo main
3. Copy local_machine/flake flake features or files from local_machine/flake into a local_machine/flake-new
4. Commit and push local_machine branch to repo
5. Merge branch on repo
6. Rename local_machine/flake → flake-old, and rename local_machine/flake-new → flake
7. Future pushes from local_machine/flake now share Codeberg's history

Any tips and tricks for using #git for #nix #nixos #flakes : when the "mother flake" flake lives on a public repo & is set up to provide multiple #configurations for different machines built using:
nixos-rebuild switch --flake .#<machine_name>
I dug myself into a hole by copying the files from the mother flake repo to set up a new machine and the flake on my new machine has diverged & cannot be merged back into the mother flake repo because I did not *clone* it down so has no common git history

and they are run professionally and competently and socially conscientiously. Amazing. But these are not owned by the tenants (which is fine). Also they tend to have very large blocks (efficient) and they tend to become "socially homogeneous" which means that there is no geographical mixing between "different income categories".

@nprofile…yj83 @nprofile…x9tq And.... house prices seem to go up faster than income not because they are a bubble but because the amount of extra money put into circulation to drive inflation results in a halving of the value of cash every 10 years ish... and houses are just an opt-out from using cash as an asset when the powers that be change the value of the money after you earn it. House price inflation is just a measure of the devaluation of your currency, not the root cause of poverty.

@nprofile…yj83 @nprofile…x9tq While people are not able to vote for policies that give me the same take-home return on my 100 euros invested in a normal bank as someone would get who gambles with billions and does not need the money in the first place, society has failed to make use of capitalism's (math's) gift of compound interest. Renting is the identical problem. It takes you out of the game and causes the entrenched poverty over generations that the rent reform seeks to ameliorate.

@nprofile…yj83 @nprofile…x9tq Interesting. The interest rate for safe, immediately available small sums of money is low & never above the government-calculated inflation number. So the normal person loses their assets in real terms if they rent & "save" cash. They cannot gain from capitalism. The importance of owning property is not profiting from price booms, but that the value of houses keeps in step with the true measure of inflation: the cost of your most important cost point i.e. accommodation.

@nprofile…x9tq My thesis is that DE has absolutely no free market at all worth speaking if. But the average quality of life is vastly higher than the UK on all fronts. The UK and US live of hope and aspirations of the working person....which are dashed... and DE just makes the working person content enough that the true wealth stays with the usual suspects. A sort of social symbiosis.

@nprofile…x9tq This is what certain ladies made of ferrous elements understood to the core and why the UK has elements of fairness in its laissez-faire system. In DE you only ever buy one house/flat for life. There is no way into the market. There is no market. It is like not being allowed to save with interest. You are forced to rent: there simply are no cheap flats to get on the ladder because they are all uniformly in top quality blocks due to the legal requirements & actions of bulk investors.

@nprofile…x9tq DE regulates wages in the public sector by law so there is no higher pay if you work in a shortage profession. Jobs are not advertised with a salary offered. They ask you what you want to earn & take you if you under sell yourself. The higher skilled will be skipped if they try to maximise their income & get under-cut. There is absolutely zero mobility between professions. So what happens: your income is static & low & you have to rent: you never ever gain assets from working.

@nprofile…x9tq The rules in DE are protective of tenants & renting life-long is not a state of limbo nor "second class lifestyle". The law even sets limits on the rent according to rules like how high the tiles go in the bathroom. Law is so strict that the housing stock is tip top because tenants can demand & get repairs. It is a huge business managing & maintaining rental properties. The rub: your pension fund buys flats & you rent them back. You lose all your capital. Zero wealth gain for you!

For each host, recovery must restore not just configuration, but a compatible pair:
(flake revision, persist snapshot)
The trusted recovery unit is therefore not “latest flake” alone, but a

I’ve been thinking through disaster recovery with #NixOS #flakes, impermanence, and #ZFS.
A flake defines a system declaratively, but assumes storage (e.g. ZFS pools) and persisted data (e.g. /persist) already exist. Flakes don’t create storage—they only configure it. Right?

BUT I do not yet use the TCP connection at all only lora radio at the moment... so not sure I have anything that could help you if you are connecting over internet. (Try feeding errors into claude / chatgpt. Claude code is best at command line & will fix your problem for sure if it can see your setup files)

@nprofile…g2t7 Well get this. Even if you own a flat you might not be allowed to rent it out to short term tenants e.g. for a week or so ... so how is that property justice? If the safety regulations are kept and tax paid why does the state seek to determine what you can do with your property. There are so many biased laws that benefit corporations over small people. Capitalism has not reached the majority of people who only have less as a result.

For impermanence I do not on the fly see any difference between the different machines listed in the Configs/hardware (which is how I currently have it also) or have I missed something. I am seeking a flake example that has different hardware (mount) locations for different machines... just wondering, no problem.
