one idea that I got is a long shot, but might work.
There are apps that do auto time tracking by recording the active apps. They might be able to capture it because they are always watching for the active window. I haven’t used Mac in a while - TimingApp for Mac used to do this. When it happens, just leave it for 30 seconds or so and the check if it’s caught?

This is amazing, my bash prompt is already loaded by the time #KDE #Konsole launches.
The pyenv and nvm shell patching was so slow. I was feeling bad for spending money on a 7 series processor. I mean if my 6 year old i5 prompt is reacting just as fast as the latest Ultra7, what's even the point?

There is a "BraveSoftware" folder in my ".config" even though I have never installed Brave Browser in my machine.
Turns out, #1Password is putting in a "NativeMessagingHosts/com.1password.1password.json" file and that's the reason this folder exists.
How hard is to check if the folder is present before adding the file?

Running a benchmark using hyperfine tells me, pyenv takes ~172ms and nvm takes about ~265 ms.
And together their loading impact is around ~330ms everytime I open the terminal.
No wonder one commentor on Reddit said, opening their terminal feels like waking up a sleeping man and getting him to work instead of someone fired up and ready to go.

I have been spending the free time last few days using Ansible to install software on Debian. A few things:
* The deb822 ansible module is great. It shortens 4 lines of shell command from providers to add a new debian repo source into a single call.
* A surprising no. of crucial software I use like nvm, pyenv …etc., are totally dependent on Github for distribution. It's all installed on user env and patched into user shell. I am not a fan.
* Setting up "config distributions" like Doom Emacs, LunarVim are almost impossible. Better to do it from the shell by hand. The LSPs and the layers of dependencies we have added to make these text editors into IDEs is absurd.

I was just thinking the other day, how the entire social media scene is blown up version of a high school cool kids group and Mark Zuckerberg just is a somehow the kid who seems to be in senior year for 3 years just buying up the group every year. FB, WhatsApp, Instagram.. He was a genius and really cool kid with FB. But is now just a rich kid buying his coolness and is actually pretty bland otherwise.
Yes, I have taken some shortcuts in the analogy. But this simplification is fine for me.

The combination of light workload and being constantly short of my toolset has made me just wipe Kubuntu and install Debian Testing with KDE.
Now slowly adding software using Ansible following @npub16p4…yy7t ’s footsteps.
This has made things slower to setup, but has the benefit very deliberate and clear decision making. I am chucking out anything that asks me to download a binary and drop it into a random folder.
Surprised how many tools that are essential are packaged and the rest which are “nice to haves” and not packaged.

This post "Declarative Ubuntu" by Fernando Ayats is an interesting take on doing documented and versioned management of a Linux system.
It talks about creating a meta-debian-package of everything that's needed in a system and installing that package. This is different from say using Ansible to configure your system.
Maybe it would be worth trying this out.. hmmm. do I have the time to do this? 🤔

Migrating fully to a new laptop has taken me 3 weeks, and even now I am only 80% there. There is still another 20% I am totally dependent on my old laptop.
Geez... the evolution a computer goes through over the years. The packages, the shortcuts, the settings and tweaks... It's not an easy task.

I use #Linkding as my self-hosted bookmarks manager, because it offers a clean and no-frills interface to collect and manage bookmarks.
I don't like Linkwarden because of the cardview that feels like a ecommerce or product site all screaming for attention.

The concept of Linux Subsystems is on an immutable base is interesting. Like VMs but accessible from the base system all the time.

After thinking about immutable-distros and configuration driven distribution like NixOS, I have found one thing that I would really be happy to use - A self documenting distro.
Something that’s equivalent to literate programming. Is there a way to say I installed a program on a specific date from a specific place and the files of it sits in the disk here taking that much space.
The amount of crap I find strewn around locals, configs, caches.. are freaking joke. And there is no way to keep track of anything.

One of those days when things stop working for no reason and after digging down you find yourself dealing with an SQLite DB file of 4.8GB.
The system reports it's using 98% of the 4.84GBs, and you wonder why is a 20GB disk getting reported as ~5GB.
Finally, you just give up trying to get out of the quagmire of AWS volume, OCI plugin, sqlite temp requirements..etc., and just start deleting some old data.

No longer clicking Win+Tab and Alt+Tab randomly 🌀 until I get the correct combination of Keyboard layout + KRunner working.
I am super stoked about this. You see, Win+Tab switches keyboard layout and Alt+Tab brings up Krunner. I mess up these keys all the time.

Got my new keyboard from Keychron. That was surprisingly fast. Last time I had to wait a bit IIRC.
Anyway, it's a K15 Pro low profile. Didn't realize I ordered one with 5 Macro keys.
Now I have mapped 4 of them to switch desktops in KDE. No more cycling a menu :)

As far the choices, I like the small portable ones. K3 Max or K3 Pro with RGB backlight and hot swappable switches. I have the K2, would totally buy K3 Pro if I need a replacement today.

I was idealist and then life slowly changed me into a pragmatist in the last decade. I might sound like I am retiree here, but the change from youth to parenthood is a lot. Not much changes after that tbh.

I harbor no such thought that we will live in "harmony with nature" (whatever that means). I am more of a pragmatist who doesn't want mass migration happening by the time I retire and would do things to prevent that. Fossil fuel to solar and wind transition is a no-brainer at the moment. There is a cost to everything. Solar and Wind seem to have the lowest cost in the long run.

The only ecological issue in the BBC article that wikipedia page links to is the local villagers complaining that they can't graze cattle in govt land anymore. I think we can live with that level of "uncleanliness" because the way climate change is going that village will be walking with their belongings on their head in a few years.

I really liked the concept of #VanillaOS and it's stacks and images. Since my work involves developing and testing multiple features, I wanted to give it a go by setting up a stack of by base system and then creating a new instance for each ticket I am working on.
But, the installer couldn't detect my wifi card (apparently the drivers for some of the latest cards don't exist) and OS won't isntall without an internet connection.
Oh! well, continuing with Kubuntu as is. Live and die with docker I guess.

good question. And I think we know the answer.
Axis MF has been mostly good. They generally check if I know what I am doing and as soon as I start talking confidently and ask specific questions, they get out of the way. But this time, even after mentioning that active funds charge 1.5% commission which is a lot more than passive funds, the guy tried to convince me. That’s what pissed me off.

I think performance would be the same. I read that the Ultra ones are focused on power consumption so might throttle more. 16 cores might only be just as performant as 10 cores.
I went for it mainly because of the low power mode. I use Linux, so no laptop provides as much runway as Windows. Hoping low power processor can go a little longer.

3 months ago, looking at wide monitor was such a pain, I rotated it out to a vertical concfiguration.
Now the neck and shoulder are straining again and rotating it out to a horizontal config seems to be more comfortable.

I am not sure what's up. But the Kubuntu 24.04 clean install on a full hard disk format has issues booting up. No #ItJustWorks experience.
Dropped into recovery mode and ran fdisk, networking and an apt update before it booted consistently into the GUI.
Then an `apt upgrade` seems to have fixed it.
It shouldn't have been this stressful.

I just got the new PC. It was supposed to be a Thinkpad, but for 32Gigs of RAM and an Ultra 7 Processor, I settled for an Ideapad with soldered RAM running at 7400Mhz instead of slots wtih 5600Mhz.
Oh! did I say, it was 1000 bucks cheaper?
Anyways, getting the Kubuntu Bootable media ready. The first time it boots, it will be in #Linux. That Windows Copilot crap won't even see the light of the day.

I get it. I like it as a part of the story telling. But, to me the entire movie as a whole is a slap to morality. Everything happens in the wrong side of law and ends in the wrong side. I thought about it too, but let it go as I didn’t want to spoil the fun for myself. For a law prof it would not be a easy task.

Watched #Maharaja (#Tamil movie) on Netflix. Interesting screenplay, interleaving multiple time periods. The movie keeps trying to surprise you until the very end. I say "trying" because after the first couple of ones, you get used to it, and it's more predictable.
Has hardcore violence at the center of all this. So can't really recommend it to anyone.

Public transport is so much more manageable when it’s just me, the one person.
Took the kid to his Rhythm and Rhymes session and back, 2 trams either way, with very little fuss.
Last time both of us did that, we swore never to take trams for this class again. 😅

Yup. Thinkpad 5th Gen is 2 slots. I usually buy laptops 1 generation older to save money, but if I buy a Thinkpad, it might have to be the latest, just for this.

In my research for an upgradable laptop, discovered that #Lenovo #Thinkpad Gen 4 has 1 soldered RAM while Gen 5 has both as slots.
Had the same issue with my current laptop. That's why I have an odd 20GB RAM config (4GB Soldered + 16GB I added)
