I made palak paneer for the first time yesterday! While I didn't have all the spices and had to use frozen spinach instead of fresh, it still was delicious.
I now need to go back to the Indian store, get stocked on spices and make a proper version.

The most confusing thing is that Drew posted about a way better solution just 3 days before: https://drewdevault.com/2026/03/25/2026-03-25-Forking-vim.html
Why not fork rsync? Why suggest replacing it with tar, ignoring the single most important feature of rsync (you know, the 'sync' part)?
This reads like a joke posted a few days too early to be an April fools.

2026-04-08 22:57:40 GMT

I would expect the anti-AI crowd to have a bit more self respect and not come up with half-assed, terrible solutions like this: https://drewdevault.com/2026/03/28/2026-03-28-rsync-without-rsync.html
This is just appalling. If this is how they are going to avoid any AI tainted code base, I just feel sad for them.

What saddens me the most about the recent Lutris drama is seeing how many people still view Lutris as a Wine prefix manager when I've said for more than a decade that I didn't want Lutris is be a Wine prefix manager.
If you want a "Wine prefix manager" use Bottles, that's what it's for.

There are a lot of things to discuss. There's a lot of pressure to put on companies and governments alike. There are tons of issues and bullshit in that space...
But I am not to be shamed by people I don't know and who have never helped me with anything in life.

Some observations about AI tooling:
- It requires experience, judgement and taste. You must be able to question its output, iterate on it
- 6 months ago it was shit, recent models did get a lot better but they're expensive
- it will be beneficial to people who deal with a bunch of different things more than those with focused and stable projects
- context is key, without context AI will hallucinate. Tools like Claude Code produce much better results than querying a web browser

@nprofile…njch I'm not trying to achieve anything. I was pointing out that it's funny to me that some will critique AI energy usage while still participating in car culture. People drive cars or use AI if they need to or want to. Both require a considerable amount of energy because they achieve a considerable amount of work. The real issue is again corporations going crazy and consuming a lot more resources than they should / buying all the RAM in the world.

Whether your source of information is from LLMs or humans, you should verify it, cross-reference it. If you accept everything you read as true, then the problem is with you, not the tech.

Of course, most mega corporations will try to get in the AI space and get benefits from it, inducing a lot of cringe, low quality products and deception.
That doesn't make the tech inherently bad and corporations jumping on the latest hype isn't something new.
But is hype / bubble / whatever you want to call it based on the fact that this is groundbreaking technology.

Doom The Dark Ages runs nicely if you have a Nvidia GPU. Tested on Playtron GameOS.
It also runs on the Steam Deck with SteamOS Preview, it's fairly playable at 30fps @ 720p
On Nobara 42 with AMD GPU, the game crashes during the Bethesda logo. It's fairly usual for id Software games to require Mesa patches and this time it's the same. But the patch seems to be already in SteamOS so I'm hoping it will be merged in Nobara soon.

@nprofile…mqwa are they only consumers though? Without the support of the studios, Linux users are their own support, they find solutions, they help the whole platform improve.
Mesa, Vulkan, controller support have massively improved over the past few years and those improvements only benefit Windows games for the most part.
Game devs (well mostly publisher) only care about shipping on a platform where they will sell. Maybe Linux will become a 1st class target if it gains enough traction.

2025-05-08 07:37:34 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…mqwa it's not a matter of respect, game devs can't help users on a platform they don't target or use.
Most studios are aware of the Steam Deck / Proton and know their game will run if it doesn't do weird things.
Linux users should still approach Proton / Mesa devs before contacting game studios, that's how games get fixed nowadays.
Is it unhealthy to have games that are not directly supported by their creators if Linux is already doing a better job than Windows in a lot of cases?

My only hope is that one day we just get rid of that whole "Linux gaming" thing and it just becomes part of "gaming" in general. There's already so few differences compared to Windows, the distinction becomes less and less relevant.

Websites like GamingOnLinux are representative of a larger problem which is how little value developers get from the overall Linux community. We give a lot, we get back almost nothing and yet they keep asking for more and are generally bitchy and useless.

If I can finish this day without getting into a fight with GamingOnLinux, I will be very proud of myself.
