Definitely been happening to me a lot lately on nostr and telegram when attempting to answer questions about projects I'm working on and people who react with hostility because they think I'm trying to scam them or something 😔
My heart rate spikes, I start typing really fast. It's a total threat reaction. In this case, the threat is: "I thought me and this person could provide value to each other, but he's seeing me as an enemy and we're losing an opportunity for mutual benefit. How can I fix this?!"
It's not a good trait, but I find it hard to let it go of when I have the presumption that everyone has the potential to be a valuable collaborator. Optimistic maniac!

You assign trust/influence/value-to-you to accounts along contexts - not just "about the person" (which I agree is a problem in the bad version of WoT).
So you are ultimately scoring their content. If I assign low trust to Laeserin on the "economics" context but high on "religion", then when she writes content on those two topics, it will be filtered (for ME, not anyone else) accordingly.
Now, if you attest about me on these two topics, my view of Laeserin will slightly influence your view of Laeserin (only on these topics), along with your own view of her and others you've attested about.
The process is entirely voluntary and reputation flows from you. Nobody else can influence your graph if you don't trust them to. There is no global state of influence.

At the base level, you make attestations about how much you trust particular people on particular topics, and your own subjective web of influence builds up from that (taking into account who _they_ trust, and how much, etc. many hops out).
It's not gameable or abusable because the reputation flows from you outward, at your control.
I've been cheerleading this project pretty aggressively because I had worked on a similar paradigm on different platform. I got excited to bring the concept to Nostr and then what do you know, I find that David has already done it! Great!

Subjective influence systems when properly implemented work by looking at who _you_ think is valuable, and helping you judge, filter and discover content as a result. That works perfectly well when one is anonymous.
It's only if you want to be perceived as a valuable curation node / trust provider to _others_ would you need to be not-anonymous.

Yes. I thought we were using the term a little more colloquially to mean "onboarding". I guess I should have phrased it as:
- if you have a social foothold, then `bootstrapping` as a term doesn't apply to you.
- if you are a ghost, then there is no bootstrapping possible for you.
Which just sort of ends up being a conversation-killer because it says "bootstrapping ain't a thing".
But it does imply the only solution: you gotta know someone to get to know anyone else.
OR: your client/app/whatever your entry point is provides something.
Consider an IRL social party venue where you're only permitted to talk to someone if you have a valid "intro". Either you go there with a friend who knows a few people and you sort of shadow them for a bit... or the venue itself hosts a "mixer" kind of event where it organizes interested people together to get to know each other.
The first case is web of influence. the second case is software-specific introductions.
An example of the second case: I install a chess game the is built on a decentralized protocol. Whoever I got the software binary from is my entry point: maybe they host one of many game servers. I'm automatically "introduced" to all the players on that server.
The worst version of this is MySpace Tom, as you point out. But it's only up from there.

Maybe I've just suffered brain damage from being convinced by this model for the past two years, but I literally cannot see any other way to do it that makes any sense.
Once you banish the idea of `global` or `objective` from your head, everything becomes clear. It might just be a fact that "onboarding" in a decentralized network is going to be fundamentally different (call it "worse") than with centralized "networks". We should be careful in comparing decentralized onboarding solutions to their centralized cousins - it's apples and oranges.
And this might be a wonderful thing. If I'm joining a highly-personal and localized network (maybe it's a little mini app for a local club that is built on nostr), it _should_ feel quiet and intimate. Maybe _all_ software and social networking applications should feel like that. It might be that the thirst for "wide reach" and "global discovery" are exactly the agents that poison the well.

- already know personally
- found out about the platform from
- created whatever software(s) they're using to use the platform
- etc.

We did the exact same thing one year. I think the cut scapes were better, if I remember correctly. Whatever the outcome was, we concluded with "we'll always cut the scapes" - so I assume it was that the bulbs were better.
Seems to be reasonable: keep the energy in the bulb rather than in the scape/flower.
I think you only leave the scapes if you want to propagate the garlic - but that's a multi-year process and I've never dove into it. I just buy seed garlic each year.

This is why peer to peer personal servers are so damn revolutionary.
