my favorite Piper fact is the devs added deliberate logic to ensure the system never generates any "interesting" changelist numbers (round numbers, digits of pi or e, repeated digits etc etc. they were very thorough). Because internal devs kept writing shell scripts to compete to get changelist #400000000 or whatever, generating hundreds of disposable changelists and overloading the servers the entire workforce depended upon just to get some minor nerd cred

The ongoing shitshow of Linux sound APIs: everyone collectively moved from PulseAudio to Pipewire, which now added a new dependency that brings in 50MB of AI/ML junk.

my personal fear is that we're going to end up seeing a US Supreme Court ruling that the output of LLM models belongs to the company that trained the model
That's potentially disastrous for open source because suddenly companies like Anthropic and OpenAI would get to retroactively claim copyright over/demand money from any projects that have incorporated code they helped generate
We're not anywhere near that point yet but considering how much they spend on training the models, it's going to be strongly in their interests to lobby for it and pour money into funding lawsuits that would get them that precedent

I still haven't watched Lower Decks even though I'm definitely the target audience. There's something about the concept of a comedy series set in the Star Trek universe that is also canon that I consider distasteful

if Starbucks tried to pay its employees with Starbucks gift cards they'd be laughed at. AI companies do the same thing and it's for some reason considered an innovative new compensation model

Tamagotchis were really popular when I was a kid, and I knew some other kids who genuinely seemed to buy in to the idea that they were "real" animals rather than just an electronic toy. Now people like that are all grown up and cheating on their wives with chatbots. Stories like this one remind me that people who don't understand how tech works, can buy into all kinds of nonsense stories about it.

Yep, I had a similar-ish experience with Canonical's broken hiring process a couple of years ago when I applied. I have a thread here where I wrote about it at the time:
https://octodon.social/@fraggle/109280048360828159
Includes pseudoscientific "psychometric assessment" test that likely violates disability laws in most countries
Shuttleworth has talked at length about the process on Reddit, making clear that it's very deliberate and not an accident. My conclusion was the same: don't work for Canonical
