One is left looking at tasks one might automate and asking “is this something a competent five year old would be good at, or just a cracked software engineer?” npub19u906k47vnunmzn4scrr77qmd8nr8pamnf2d232ulnjn77u8a5rqjtn6t5 Boarders The corporate politics of procurement seems to me one of the most interesting under-discussed questions today, especially in the context of universities or schools. There are so many pieces one reads berating academic labour to get serious about future finances; about the future viability of the liberal university, but the follow up is never to ask who is in charge of procurement of e-learning software, never how much it is costing, never whether the department(s) responsible for this collection of choices are ‘living in the real world’. In my experience, many of the same trends re-occur through a glass darkly in other corporate environments where a product manager will push to pay millions of dollars per year for a certain service, but won’t hire a single extra engineer to work on an internally developed custom version of a similar service. npub19u906k47vnunmzn4scrr77qmd8nr8pamnf2d232ulnjn77u8a5rqjtn6t5 Boarders @nprofile…rrqe I think Girard’s idea of ‘blind spot or Althusser’s of ‘problematic’ are much more important ideas for whether socially oppressed people manage to succeed, that is to say, whether a subject is open to introspective practices and imminent critique. From this point of view it makes almost no sense to speak of any distinction as practical vs theoretical except to say that theoretical disciplines often more closely embody such ideals (but if we are honest both are typically horrible at it) npub19u906k47vnunmzn4scrr77qmd8nr8pamnf2d232ulnjn77u8a5rqjtn6t5 Boarders @nprofile…8eua this is from Granström’s book Treatise On Intuitionistic Type Theory which situates Lebnitz’ project in a broader movement towards a universal language ‘for logic’ (in the ancient sense of the word). The book makes the case (I can’t say whether successfully or otherwise yet) that ML type theory should be considered the modern successor to this project npub19u906k47vnunmzn4scrr77qmd8nr8pamnf2d232ulnjn77u8a5rqjtn6t5 Boarders “A lot of present day work in computer science has some connection with the lingua characteristica and it is a curious fact that, in the past 50 years, computer science, as a subject, has had more impact on the lingua characteristica than logic, mathematics, and philosophy together. The reason seems to be that a certain amount of realism is, so to say, forced upon the computer scientist and this realism is, as it seems, an important ingredient in the lingua characteristica. This is why few implementations of mathematics on computer are based on Zermelo-Frankel set theory, despite it presently being the most popular foundation of mathematics.” npub19u906k47vnunmzn4scrr77qmd8nr8pamnf2d232ulnjn77u8a5rqjtn6t5 Boarders @nprofile…rrqe I think it would be reasonable that school informally teaches some of the algebraic properties of division with remainder e.g. what is the remainder in long division when taking the sum etc. but feel strongly that university / college should be for introspective practice and should include 20th century mathematics (I am, for the same reason, dead against high school style calculus in college) npub19u906k47vnunmzn4scrr77qmd8nr8pamnf2d232ulnjn77u8a5rqjtn6t5 Boarders @nprofile…rrqe this is also true of management at a corporation, they might once have been your totally together colleague but once they begin in management they will lose all perspective and quickly have no technical knowledge of the projects they supposedly run npub19u906k47vnunmzn4scrr77qmd8nr8pamnf2d232ulnjn77u8a5rqjtn6t5 Boarders @nprofile…rrqe I don’t know how to explain the change of basis matrix in linear algebra and similar _without_ commutative diagrams npub19u906k47vnunmzn4scrr77qmd8nr8pamnf2d232ulnjn77u8a5rqjtn6t5 Boarders @nprofile…ral2 what makes something a subcanonical(/supercanonical) sheaf? npub19u906k47vnunmzn4scrr77qmd8nr8pamnf2d232ulnjn77u8a5rqjtn6t5 Boarders @nprofile…stct strongly recommend getting a zwilling kettle npub19u906k47vnunmzn4scrr77qmd8nr8pamnf2d232ulnjn77u8a5rqjtn6t5 Boarders @nprofile…rrqe the idea that something consists of ‘composable parts’ and ergo category theory has something profound to say about is purely for vapid grant writing. Some random things come to mind: In Ritchie Robertson’s The Enlightenment: The Pursuit of Happiness, he discusses public displays of science that emerged in the 17th century, and various scientific thinkers at the time making clear that they don't wish to present science as a new mysticism but that the displays are meant primarily for public enlightenment. Similarly, I recently read the preface to the book Everything and More and Neal Stephenson contrasts the academic ethos of what he terms a MACT (midwest american college town) with that of the promethean myth. The MACT typifying a certain kind of democratic view of human knowledge and discovery. The promethean myth view is flattering to both scientists and non-scientists; treats scientific knowledge as some mystical otherworldly kind of thing. Clearly, for a long while now it has been in the ascendancy -- the same view also treats the public communication of science as mystifying infotainment and casually acceptable misinformation. Given the structural forces on the academy and the renewed need to re-assert the values of public enlightenment, the reassessment underway of the post-war american funding model for industrial-scale science research, I think your way of seeing things will be very well placed regardless of where this version of the academy is in the next decades. npub19u906k47vnunmzn4scrr77qmd8nr8pamnf2d232ulnjn77u8a5rqjtn6t5 Boarders @nprofile…6kk0 I was thinking recently watching various “essays” on youtube that they wouldn’t pass muster even in the era when essay writing was funded by the state department. If R is presented as ℤ[x_1,…x_n]/(f_1,…f_m) then we can think of this as a logical theory which has n constants satisfying the m axioms given by f_1,…f_m and the functor above can be described as: Hom(R,S)={models of R in S} = {choice of n constants in S that satisfy the m equations / ‘axioms’} We can then think there is some associated geometric object spec(R) and that this geometric object is a ‘moduli space’ for the models of the theory R in the sense that ‘generalized’ points of the space exactly correspond to models of the “theory” R. npub19u906k47vnunmzn4scrr77qmd8nr8pamnf2d232ulnjn77u8a5rqjtn6t5 Boarders @nprofile…6kk0 Your thread makes me think about the idea that “governments structure markets”, that is to say - governments create a regime of safety or quality regulations, property laws, copyright laws etc. - and in contrast there is no such entity as the “free market” which would exist outside the structuring that takes place. To the extent that “free markets” do exist, the App Store gives a great example of what they converge towards: a scam economy driven by a race to the bottom where marginal unit cost converges towards production cost and skilled professionals cannot compete against junk npub19u906k47vnunmzn4scrr77qmd8nr8pamnf2d232ulnjn77u8a5rqjtn6t5 Boarders @nprofile…s6x2 GHC notes are a good example too of the kinds of many-to-many source relationships large projects eventually want to be able to communicate npub19u906k47vnunmzn4scrr77qmd8nr8pamnf2d232ulnjn77u8a5rqjtn6t5 Boarders @nprofile…v2av if you have sheaves on a topological space, then the subobject classifier is given by the downward closure of any open set. One way of thinking about the subobject classifier is that it classifies where something is situated - e.g. it answers the way one variable set might be situated with respect to another - and so my inclination would be just to say that the subobject classifier is one answer to the question npub19u906k47vnunmzn4scrr77qmd8nr8pamnf2d232ulnjn77u8a5rqjtn6t5 Boarders @nprofile…59k6 your first thing doesn’t seem correct to me: if I ask an expert to prove whether the well ordering principle holds in a topos then they will say “it doesn’t because as usually formulated it is a classical principle” whereas an LLM will give what statistically looks like a proof - what people mean is that the output looks like the average output across large text to “please provide something that looks like a proof of this fact” npub19u906k47vnunmzn4scrr77qmd8nr8pamnf2d232ulnjn77u8a5rqjtn6t5 Boarders @nprofile…6kk0 only an LLM could give an answer to the query “please write me a novel legal argument that corporations and unions have speech rights, via the first amendment, which would be curtailed by restricting their political contributions” npub19u906k47vnunmzn4scrr77qmd8nr8pamnf2d232ulnjn77u8a5rqjtn6t5 Boarders @nprofile…6kk0 I remember being amazed when I first went to America and even in a cheap diner they immediately bring you a water, give you free refills on coffee, don’t charge for packets of condiments… the UK is really something else when it comes to basic customer service in so many domains npub19u906k47vnunmzn4scrr77qmd8nr8pamnf2d232ulnjn77u8a5rqjtn6t5 Boarders @nprofile…6kk0 do you find the performance to now feel bad in light of modern hardware or for these purposes it is good enough? npub19u906k47vnunmzn4scrr77qmd8nr8pamnf2d232ulnjn77u8a5rqjtn6t5 Boarders @nprofile…59k6 this is v nice and begins to explain why topology is intimately tied up in logic (e.g. recursively enumerable sets that are not recursive) npub19u906k47vnunmzn4scrr77qmd8nr8pamnf2d232ulnjn77u8a5rqjtn6t5 Boarders @nprofile…59k6 what would primarily change about it? npub19u906k47vnunmzn4scrr77qmd8nr8pamnf2d232ulnjn77u8a5rqjtn6t5 Boarders @nprofile…uxsy @nprofile…6kk0 @nprofile…6al5 @nprofile…hszg @nprofile…l9jz this analogy is totally wrong and misguided - studying the topos of G-sets is not something from elementary group theory since it is a totally different emphasis. Grothendieck first realized if G is a galois group for a field k, then the topos of G-sets is equivalent to the étale site of k and the group cohomology is the same as the étale cohomology (which here is also the galois cohomology). You can think this is all words and just re-packaging of known objects except the geometric point of view this enabled is crucial and the grothendieck school solved the Weil conjectures using it. The topos of sets with permutation actions is one of the richest objects in mathematics and so of course it appears in many areas, in many guises - trying to act like you need to defend your turf like this comes across as anti-intellectual and is not becoming of anyone (generally most attempts at selling out your colleagues in another department for their lack of rigor comes across like a scab to my ears) npub19u906k47vnunmzn4scrr77qmd8nr8pamnf2d232ulnjn77u8a5rqjtn6t5 Boarders @nprofile…6kk0 I think _the_ way to do a mathematics reading group that has cash value is you meet each week to collectively solve the exercises - it’s not perfect, for the pacing reasons you say - but the exercises are a strong forcing function on keeping everyone with some direct contact for what they can do and for reading analytically and with a self-driven purpose (reading groups based around one person ‘presenting the chapter’ on the other hand, have never worked for me very well) npub19u906k47vnunmzn4scrr77qmd8nr8pamnf2d232ulnjn77u8a5rqjtn6t5 Boarders @nprofile…6kk0 I do get the sense that the kinds of deep investment that something like emacs or vim or various unix tools is at serious odds with current broad ideologies around what is or could be valuable to learn, not sure if this is merely misplaced nostalgia against younger generations, but I don’t think so (and I think they are only responded to incentives) npub19u906k47vnunmzn4scrr77qmd8nr8pamnf2d232ulnjn77u8a5rqjtn6t5 Boarders @nprofile…6kk0 I think you already probably answered, but do you see a future for Forester to produce books (I realize the knowledge model might be antithetical in some respects)? One recent book in this vein is Software Design For Flexibility by Hanson and Sussman. Another line of thinking I am a fan of is Conal Elliott’s ideas about denotational design. I think some of the ideas from Goguen are also relevant to an “algebra of design”. I would love to know some other references or points of view.
