Indeed. The Western philosophical tradition is founded on the thoughts of people who were actively involved in replacing democratic experiments with autocratic “elites”.
Thank goodness for the radicals of French postmodernism!

Nice quote.
Also…
Aristotle was a stooge for Philip of Macedon. He would be like Jordan Peterson or Steven Pinker today, standing with the fascists, watching democracy die. For him, the right person to be angry with would be the protestors.

The Japan Times has reported that Chinese support for Iran is raising questions about Chinese neutrality.
I, of course, question the neutrality of the Trump-friendly warmongers writing for the Japan Times. Nonetheless, I imagine their report has some basis in fact.

Brexit showed that the results of a referendum can be influenced by bad actors.
The current Labour government shows that representative democracy can be undermined by a party being elected on a slate of policies, none of which they then enact.
I’d rather face the hazards of the more direct form. At least people get what they vote for, which is supposed to be the point of democracy.

I taught an Afghani girl in 2000. She was in my GCSE class. She was a widow, who had been tortured by the people who had killed her husband. She had to leave school to help her mother with her asylum case.
When I think of refugees, I think of her.
Western politicians have money and land for data centres but not for people.
What is the point of democracy if those are its values?

The targeting of civilians is always wrong. “Bomber” Harris knew he would have been prosecuted as a war criminal if the Allies had lost. The fact remains that he committed war crimes. The counter argument is always “military necessity”. We can see the two sides of the argument today in Ukraine and Palestine. The answer should be plain. The targeting of civilians is always wrong.
