hmm.. just saw a post about how vibe coded software isn't free software bc you can't study it since the publisher doesn't understand it.
that reasoning seems seriously off, but it does make me think :blobfoxthink:
could someone still study the code? yes!
but is that enough? what if i release a compiled binary and put a floss license on it? is it floss? the answer should be no, bc one can study the compiled code, but that's not the human readable version that a dev works with, so it doesn't count.
and there's the thing! vibe coded implies not actually working with the code! it works by prompting! that means the human readable form is actually the prompt!
so then the question is, what if i get the prompt? can i use that to get the working software? is that a requirement for it to be floss?
like it does seems there's actually something there to think about :blobfoxthink:

one annoying thing is the CHANGELOG.md bc it always creates merge conflicts, while the conflicts are such trivial things..
I wonder if it's possible to fix this, maybe by doing some automated steps when merging to a branch :blobfoxthink:
maybe have a folder somewhere "CHANGELOG", and then you can add files there with the needed info for your PR. And then when merging to the develop branch, some runner job builds it onto the CHANGELOG.md and removes the files again. :blobfoxthink: I think this could work and be rather trivial, no? :blobfoxthink:

@nprofile…m3qg idk, i've seen several people here be very positive about it and i have no reason to not believe them. time will tell i guess. i have to admit i kinda feel like i'm seeing opportunities close on me. i believe i'm good enough at least to land some junior programmer job if i wanted, but i'm not sure i'll be able to say that 5 years from now. i'm also not sure it's something i'll want, but at least i now feel like i have the opportunity.
wrt to power tools. you also still need to do the design and stuff when doing eg wood or metal work. so the analogy may be closer than you think :blobfoxthink:

2025-01-22 19:15:15 GMT

while i understand the power these llm's have for programming, i don't think it's something i'm personally very interested in. i don't even like having a big-ass ide abstracting everything away. my dad likes woodworking, but never uses power tools. there's people doing metal work, without using cnc. i guess manual programming will eventually be similar to that.

@nprofile…m3qg paypal once locked my account without warning, still had €80 on it. and when they finally unlocked it, i was unable to get the money to my own bank account, so i just donated it all to some project so its at least put to good use. stripe at least notified me beforehand. problem is that i fear that whatever such service will always have such problems. for eu it would be nice if you could say "pay to this sepa account", but maybe there's a fiscal/legal reason why they don't do that and use a payment processor inbetween, idk.

2025-01-01 20:53:33 GMT

i really like liberapay for donations btw. it's annoying on the receiving side that you require paypall or stripe, both which i've had problems with and now refuse to use. but for the donating side, it's really good imo. clear and simply interface, and once the bank mandate is in order, it all works super easy.

@nprofile…h6f2 idk. we all grow up and live in the world we do. that world changes over time. So I do believe the historical perspective is interesting, and even useful, to see what incentive our social/political system had that brought certain consequences. but i don't think it makes sense to blame an entire group of people purely based on the fact that they just happened to have born in a specific period.
the difference is basically between "boomers were the problem" vs "due to X and Y, society changed which led to things like A and B happening, which were the foundations of current problems L and M". In the former you blame a group of people and that's it. the second allows us to learn from history.

@nprofile…h6f2 hot take maybe, but i don't think generational hate makes much sense tbh. like, how are boomers in general the problem when only one of my grand parents had a car, lots of the food they got was local or even home grown, and the furthest they went on vacation was to the sea by bicycle. humans are humans in every generation, some will care about others and some will be selfish.

@npub1qh0…xeda One thing i noticed is that somewhere in my 30's i didn't see people older than me as "older". As a kid, someone even a couple years older, seems very different. They are "older" (different, maybe wiser, cooler, etc.). In my 20's, I could get along with people 10 years older than me, but there was always this deviding line between "them" and the people of my own age. I don't know when exactly, but somewhere that changed.

2024-09-15 10:52:39 GMT

there's a plugin in Falkon called greacemonkey and it's pretty awesome! I assume it also exists on other browsers, and I'm pretty sure I've seen people talk about this, but this is the first time I see it.
Basically it allows you to inject javascript files into web pages, allowing all sorts of fun things :hehe:

if there's one thing we should've learned by now, it's that updating your software is a risk and you should never update your software.

@npub1ysu…2jyl i can understand certain changes that are hard to test. But always? For everything? Not running the code even once during development?

2024-03-30 20:31:52 GMT

my current take on TDD is that everybody tests when developing.
you write a piece of code, run it to see what it does, then build further.
each time you run the code to see what it does, is testing.
and afterwards, you'll probably try some other stuff to see if you didn't break anything. this is again testing.
the only difference is whether or when you automate this otherwise manual action. but i hardly find that a fundamental difference.

@npub1ysu…2jyl Would an option to do "static except these specific things" make sense? :blobfoxthink: Or are we just back at square one then? Because if OpenSSL can be such a problem, I assume distros make sure they have the newest version any how, so it wouldn't create the compatibility issues we see now. Or am I seeing things too simplistic?

2023-08-05 16:01:21 GMT

- reply

@npub1ysu…2jyl what's the problem with that? Is it that OpenSSL needs to be easily/more quickly updateable?

2023-08-05 15:53:15 GMT

is there any one smart enough to file an issue somewhere to get the Elixir release builds be static builds? So we don't need all these flavours any more and people can just drop the binary on w/e distro they have as long as the cpu architecture is good. (As I understand, that should be possible with static builds, right?)
I guess having dynamic builds makes sense for corporations who control their infra, but for floss projects, that just seems like a bother in a lot of cases...
I'm not smart enough. I don't know where to ask, how to ask, and if they want more information, I'll probably not even understand the question :/

2023-08-05 07:12:04 GMT

a hack i've been thinking of i also want to try someday.
When your instance goes down, you get annoying 500 errors, right. But what if you can set a retry in the http proxy and tell it to retry for several seconds. You could basically restart while it looks like you still have uptime, hehe (just bigger latency).
And a quick glance tells me something like that may be possible in Caddy by using the load balancers lb_try_duration and lb_try_interval. And yes, this is load balancing settings, but who's to say you can't have a load balancing setup with only one node :blobfoxcomfysmirk:

2023-07-31 03:59:03 GMT

y' know what'd be nice to have. An exporter that dumps all posts and stuff into Activity Stream representation. And then an importer to get all of it back in. I'm thinking this should be possible in *oma. First dump everything in a big json or csv. Then have a mix task to pass the objects one by one to the pipeline. And the fetcher can be changed so that it doesn't fetch over http, but reads from the dump.
It wouldn't fully solve migrating softwares bc not all software use the same iri-schema for representing things, but it could be a start. And bc it would use AS, it's already using a standard representation everyone understands.
