That might choke off the growth in spambots, but it will also cut down on legitimate users.
I mean, I have said for years that we’re not doing our users any favors by hosting things for free because the so-called “free” sites and services they currently use are “free” because they sell people’s data to unsavory organizations around the world. And when we provide our services for free without those funding mechanisms, we teach people not to help support the services they use, which traps them on sites that are ad farms / data brokers.

I’m on Nostr and the Fediverse, though not on any Mastodon instances, and I was definitely outside looking up into the sky.
I saw the 2017 eclipse, so I knew this is worth every effort to see.

I feel the same way. I’m about to leave my job, but when you spend 6 months or more each year staying in hotels, you learn that hotels and their service companies are as malicious as any “hacker”. Never ever use the Internet unprotected at a hotel.

I took my grandsons out in the yard to watch. We didn’t get totality, but were less than five percent off. That’s still surprisingly bright. We didn’t see the corona.

I have been a Fediverse (the Fediverse predates Mastodon) member since 2009, and I have almost never seen anything that would be illegal in the USA. Each nation has different rules, so for example, I don’t follow anyone from the big Japanese instances, because they allow things that other nations don’t. Likewise, the USA allows things that many other nations don’t.
This article is mostly FUD. If you don’t follow or interact with people on instances that allow such things, you never have to worry about running into it. I also think almost every instance has a “we call the cops” policy for such situations.

We need to continue building stream curation tools into our clients. That way, we can deflect the worst offenders without relying upon centralized and federated administrators and moderators to silence them.

I’m not going to pay for Twitter / X / whatever.
But limiting DMs (within reason) is something that should have been done years ago.
First of all, people act like their DMs are private, sending personal contact information, banking information, etc. If people always knew that DMs were limited, then they would always have an alternate channel for private personal communication.

For good reason, I don’t trust any government not to misuse this. Maybe they will turn off your money if your kids download in violation of copyright or if they use “gamer words” in Fortnite. Or maybe you didn’t vote for the “right“ candidate, so they turn off your money.
Building this into a currency is a BAD thing.
