Bummer. Makes sense though as a charity relay. I don’t know much about the relay business but it seems like a lot of work and resources. I wonder if they could have made it a subscription for recurring revenue. Thanks for the answer.

“As Indigenous authors from a variety of traditions increasingly command the market’s attention, and as Indigenous editors join ventures large and small, it seems publishing is paying long overdue attention to people of Native backgrounds.”
I'm amazed to see the interest in and sheer amount of Native work published in the past decade. I once used NDN Lit (social and email newsletter) to help share Indigenous works because few were. Now, there's happily no need for something like that.

I agree in a way. Overall, it’s too early to tell. I love the idea of Nostr and see how it could benefit, but that relies on continued use and adoption. Right now Nostr feels siloed within Bitcoin culture. However, the growth in use cases seems to be occurring rapidly. If that continues, I’m sure more will come and Nostr could grow into something formidable. Currently, the hype is driving the growth. But will it sustain over the longterm?

“You put your heart and soul into your work and they devour you. They even devour the filth in your soul. They're all literate. They all have voracious appetites. They all keep crowding round - journalists, editors, critics, a constant stream of women. All of them clamoring for more. What kind of writer am I if I detest writing? It it's torture for me, a painful, shameful occupation, something akin to extruding hemorrhoids. I used to think my books helped people to become better, but nobody needs me. If I die, in a couple of days, they'll find someone else to devour. I wanted to change them, but they've changed me to fit their own image.” — Writer, “Stalker” 1979

I’m unsure about the game inspiration, but the movie was terrific. I love several older Russian storytellers (Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky primarily), but I never thought to give their movies a try. I stumbled upon this one and now want to check out more. It was quite good. This movie was based on a book, Roadside Picnic, by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky. This has opened a whole new world for me.

I’m loving the chaos.
"More important than all, is that we must keep in mind that Nostr is just a very loose set of servers with basically no connection between them, there are no guarantees of anything, and the process of keeping connected to others and finding content must be addressed through many different hackish attempts. To write Nostr applications and to use Nostr one must embrace the inherent chaos.” — #[0]

‘We request that Mr. Peltier be immediately released’: Witnesses who claimed they saw Peltier shoot the FBI agents later recanted their statements. Forensics that pinned the weapon on him turned out to be false. Even the account from the FBI agent of the vehicle that was followed into Jumping Bull Ranch was later changed to match the description of a van Peltier regularly drove, which was also proven to be false.

There is tons of spam on the public relays. There’s always the option to go paid relays which help keep out spam. You can also find interesting people to follow by looking at who other users follow. When you build up your list of follows you won’t need to look at global to find new people to follow. Simply participating in conversations will help greatly.

“That the United States has kept me locked up because I am American Indian.
“The only thing that really makes me different from other American Indians who have been mistreated, had land taken, or been imprisoned by our government, is that it is all a matter or court record in my case. The violation of my Constitutional rights has been proven in court. The fabrication of every piece of evidence used to convict me has been proven in court. The United Nations itself, comprised of 193 nations, has called for my release, noting I am a political prisoner.
“In my case as a political prisoner there does not have to be a prisoner exchange. The exchange they need to make is from their policy of injustice to a policy of justice.”

From what I can understand, anyone with the technical know how can run a server. It’s been a common refrain on there that if you don’t like any servers or get kicked off one that you could just run your own. I know there is one company that sells the ability to have a managed server, making it easier for non-techy people to run their own instance (server). Nostr seems more decentralized in that a user’s profile stays with their keys and even if they get banned from a relay they keep all their posts and followers.
On mastodon, a banned user will lose their posts and followers unless the instance allows the user to switch servers by essentially delaying the ban so the user could migrate through activitypub. In that case, the mastodon user will have their followers migrated to their new account but not their posts.
There is concern about gatekeeping but that’s because each instance is run by one or more individuals and some of them can be heavy handed with their moderation. It seems like nostr could fall into the same moderation issues.
Nostr is a step further than mastodon in the right direction of decentralization though. Glad to be involved and learning. Thanks for your help!

Interesting. Thanks for the info. The overall function does seem similar to that of mastodon then, which I understand Nostr to try to differentiate itself from. Relays are different than mastodon servers in function yet may still have the same issues when it comes to moderation.
