Dear fedi, I need autism advice!
I need to buy myself new shoes for the winter and I've been considering switching to barefoot shoes. Does anyone here know if they're actually worth it? If so, what brands are ok? Otherwise do y'all know any good shoe brands that make ergonomic shoes with wide toe boxes?
I've been struggling with researching this since most brand comparisons are compiled by Americans and they seem to have their own ergonomic shoe market over there with lots of brands that are unavailable anywhere else.

Hey so I haven't really been keeping track of audio stuff for a while now so I figured it could be good to ask on here.
What are some good IEMs or relatively portable headphones for someone on a budget? Under €50 is preferable though I could be convinced to spend up to €100 if there's a really good reason. I'm willing to order from AliExpress and I prefer wired for longevity. I primarily care about high audio quality. I'm currently still using KZ ZSN Pro X's I purchased many years ago but the glue inside them has been decomposing itself for a while now and so they keep getting goopy and sticky even though I keep cleaning them..
Additionally are there any affordable USB-C or Bluetooth DACs out there that offer good audio quality? I've been using the apple USB-C DAC and it's great but on Android you can't get it to be loud enough to use with higher impedance headphones.

Turns out James Hoffman's recipe for a pumpkin spice latte is significantly better than the stuff they have at Starbucks. Who could have guessed that using actual pumpkin, fresh spices and good espresso would produce better results?
But also even though this is tasty it just tastes like sweet spicy milk and you can't taste practically any coffee in there even though I used very intense Italian style doubleshot espresso. It honestly works better with hojicha. I'd rather enjoy my coffee in ways where I can still taste the coffee.
(I'm still of the opinion that if you only ever drink coffee drinks like the PSL you probably don't actually like coffee or you haven't had good coffee. Like in the Starbucks pumpkin spice they might as well replace espresso with powdered caffeine and the result would be identical. If I make coffee I make coffee that has a great flavor on its own so if I add enough milk, sugar and flavoring to completely mask it it's a waste of money. There are cheaper ways to get caffeine.)

Like bloodletting! I love how "natural medicine" convinces people that medical drugs have numerous side effects because they're poison meant to keep you unhealthy and herbs are natural and don't have side effects so they're good for you.
If a substance acts on your body in any meaningful way it *will* have some side effects and a possibility of overdose. Because if you alter the way one part of a complex system works it will have effects on the whole system. If a substance has no possible side effects it likely has no real effect on your body.

The thing is, this is very characteristic of the espresso community specifically, not the broader coffee community. You can get absolutely peak coffee experience using a $5 V60 dripper, a paper filter and an AliExpress grinder for $50 assuming you have good beans. A lot of coffee people are completely content with their Aeropress or pour over dripper or french press and mainly focus on getting good beans that produce coffee they enjoy.
Meanwhile, in the espresso community everyone's always talking about gear and how they can further upgrade their setup by blowing another couple hundred dollars on a slightly better electric grinder. Like I get that espresso gear is inherently quite expensive but you can still make do with an ok second hand setup and actually focus on the coffee..

Seriously every time I glimpse that sub I don't get a vibe of passion or genuine interest. Instead there's just so many people eager to buy the best gear they can afford just to have it and to maximize their convenience so they can spend as little time and effort as possible actually engaging with their "hobby". Wow the Tymbark barista oat milk is still the absolute best plant milk for coffee I've tested so far. Behaves just like cow milk, creates beautiful micro foam without the weird large bubbles I always seem to be unable to get rid of with many other brands and it works well for latte art. One thing to understand about coffee as a hobby is that specialty coffee is not as expensive as it may initially seem, especially if getting coffee at a cafe is part of your daily routine.
Like sure, it seems extremely extravagant to get a small bag of beans for 70pln (€16.5, which is on the high end of what I'd normally buy) but even then you're only paying something like €1 per doubleshot espresso and adding milk increases the price only marginally. An espresso at Starbucks is 3 times as expensive and 10 times worse (I don't know who actually drinks espresso at Starbucks, the beans they use are low key charcoal) and any basic milk drink is gonna cost you almost 5 times more. Even at the most generic cafes you're going to pay a lot more per cup than if you make the coffee yourself even when using beans from some of the fanciest roasters.
What I'm saying is, if you get your daily fix of caffeine at cafes, switching to specialty coffee at home is actually gonna be cheaper and tastier.

I'm spending the holidays with a bunch of family friends and family none of whom are vegetarian and I swear to god I think Polish people are just unable to comprehend that you can have even a single meal a day without meat. Istg today breakfast was sausage. Like just sausage and condiments. Lunch was 2 different types of meat and some very sad unfrozen veggies. @nprofile…cfuw The thing is yeah, people do explain in depth but usually without real testing to back it up. And a lot of testing that exists raises more questions.
For example, a lot of people swear by the OCD distribution tool or similar tools. The only real test I could find about it found that it gives extraction that's similarly consistent as just tapping the portafilter against a table except that using OCD almost always produced lower levels of extraction. The study couldn't even explain why that happens because practically all other metrics were basically the same across distribution methods tested.
Similarly people have detailed explanations as to why WDT is the best distribution method except there doesn't seem to be practically any research on it and I've heard very conflicting information about the extraction produced using it.

When I started getting into tea I decided to spend a little extra and get a nice Japanese Hario teapot made of quality glass with a very large infuser. I read that large infusers are important for some types of tea (particularly ones that expand a lot) and I figured if I'm gonna be buying glassware it might as well be a nice object.
Gods I'm so glad I did that. Both tea and coffee are largely a kind of ritual for me. I imagine that's the case for a lot of people. Interacting with well-made, beautiful equipment that's deliberately designed not to get in the way of your workflow makes the ritual at least 50% more pleasant for me. Just the sight of leaves unfolding in the infuser, light playing with the glass and the colorful beverage inside,,,
This is definitely a privileged position but fuck, if I can afford to get good equipment which brings joy to use and will last for a long time if I take care of it, I really think it's worth it.

It's very funky that the term "bird brain" comes from the fact that the brains of birds look like they're quite primitive and are missing the structures we tend to associate with higher brain functions. Why the hell do people legitimately care about pointless formalities? It's honestly mind-boggling. One of my professors just gave us a 20 minute talk being all offended that some of the students didn't write a proper formal email with all the niceties just to hand in some homework.
