nope, the tedium in question is setting yourself a goal, for example, chopping down an oak forest and planting cherry trees in its place, and getting there extremely slowly.

why do i spend so much time on Minecraft? it's a very tedious activity, it's type 3 fun. but i keep coming back every time.

Does ST80 have constructd that let you push the words into a list as they get computed, and then print them at once?

you already started? Which writing system did you choose? Do you consider it doable and desirable to implement those compact squiggles? That would surely make the text compact considering that each operator is its own word.

2025-08-27 16:58:17 GMT

- reply

I mean the prefix grammar. Specifically, the expression "if A then B" translates to "A la B", which is not conventional to Basic. Changing only the words, though, doesn't feel genuine, as the one-character operators are part of its own lexicon.

2025-08-27 16:53:29 GMT

- reply

no, I got annoyed really early of writing regular text as a sequence of quote marks and "20". Outside the scope of a joke, the grammar itself needs to be altered to suit TP.

I feel that with accordance to Forth's idea of descriptive program text, when you have special data types like, for example, 3D vectors, you'd rather define a separate stack for them, or a data structure of some sort that lets you manipulate items by their IDs. Not noticing this option is how you get the attitude of that prog21 post. Words that let you keep double numbers on the stack are more of a convenience than a rule.

@npub1z8r…mrq6 the photo on your article on the HPDA shows it with a pen beside it. I catched the implication that the pen can somehow be attached to the HPDA to be carried without getting lost. Have you figured out a measure like this, do you even need it?
How do you deal with the clip's handle protruding to the center of the page, covering the writing?

2025-05-18 19:38:02 GMT

Uxn is stupid actually. it shouldn't have gotten the zero-page instructions. shorts are inefficient because the size of a cell is a byte. because shorts and bytes are mixed on the stack, programming is confusing and error-prone.
but you need at least instructions for loading and storing characters, that's why the char type in C is called that! otherwise work with byte-sized data would be tedious and unintuitive. details like this make Uxn so fun. a VM with a focus on how easy it would be to program in assembly. you get multiplication as an instruction without having to implement your own procedure. thanks to the stack model you don't have to fiddle with registers. it's delightful. and so stupid.

When Sosuke meets Ponyo he immediately determines the "goldfish" he found is female. That is normal to assume because in real life fish don't turn out sentient and get to tell you directly who they are. Then the rest of the movie happens...
By a huge coincidence all of Ponyo's hundreds of siblings are female. Could it be that the designer came up with a fish that looks like a girl in a pink dress, then shaped the reality of the movie so that the question of how a male mermaid would look like would never come up?
Ponyo is a girl because she's innocent and her sisters are girls because it would be hilarious if the swarm consisted of pink and blue fish. Ponyo doesn't make sense but it would be more confusing if it made sense.

often when i read notes from lefists who are more knowledgeable than me, i get the impression "the collapse will happen any daaaay now".
there was a scene in BoJack Horseman where a soviet spy gives up on destroying America because he convinced himself that it would collapse by itself soon enough. and years later, this sentiment hasn't changed.
it's a belief that people would revolt once their quality of life gets low enough. i find this idea less and less convincing, having seen how the belarusian government fully suppressed the liberation movement, and how it took the russian people mere months to become numb to the deaths caused by their bombs.
