I need everyone to understand that there are exactly zero ways to verify someone's age online that don't involve putting millions of innocent people in danger of physical violence and/or forcing them to become hermits.
Doing this in a safe and responsible way is *fundamentally impossible*. No, your favorite method is not an exception. The whole idea is bad, full stop. Launch it into the sun.

Yes. Very odd.
Those temperatures are hovering around 70°C, so it looks like it *was* throttling to keep cool. From what I've heard, that is normal behavior for overheating SSDs.
So how the heck did it lose 8% of its life in an hour and a half?

SSDs lose device life just from getting too hot? And they don't throttle to avoid getting too hot?

#EFF explains exactly why #ZeroKnowledgeProof as #AgeVerification is not safe, and is even more dangerous than typical age-verification schemes in that, not only does it still invade the privacy of your home, it also vests power in a single company or government agency to ban you from all of society—to un-person you—whenever it pleases.

It's just another censorship/surveillance scheme, no better than any other and in some ways worse.

That said, `stty olcuc` does set your terminal to display everything in uppercase. Which can have fun consequences, like when `LS` shows the existence of a folder named `MAILDIR` but `CD MAILDIR` says “NO SUCH FILE OR DIRECTORY”.

I also wish my browser exposed an API for said machine-translate thingy.
Although I guess Mastodon could also just ship the translation model as WASM. That's what #Firefox does, so presumably websites could do it too. https://firefox-source-docs.mozilla.org/toolkit/components/translations/resources/01_overview.html
(Apparently Mastodon has server-side translate, but…um, that sounds like a great way to overload the server.)

The “File” menu was originally designed for word processors and the like, where “Print” would by default print the entire contents of the file you're looking at.
In my opinion, browsers and other non-file-oriented apps should rename “File” to something more appropriate.
Also, “File”, if it exists, should only contain items relating to the current file. Anything else, like quitting the app, belongs in a different menu (such as a separate app menu, like you'll find on macOS).

Fun fact: each of your #eyes has a blind spot.
Normally, the blind spots are in different places in your field of view, so you can see everything in your field of view with at least one eye.
But, if one eye can't see (is closed, missing, etc), or if the blind spots converge (I don't think this is possible but I dunno), then your brain will *guess* what's inside the blind spot based on what's around it.
This can cause light switches on walls to disappear when you look at the wall, for example.

OpenRC uses shell scripts to start/stop services. Decades of unpleasant experience with Debian sysvinit has taught me the folly of such an approach.
Systemd gets this right: services are started with a single command (or a handful of them) written in a configuration file with a declarative and rigorously validated syntax, and stopped by init sending signals, not by a script.
The only other init I know of that gets this right is launchd from macOS.

What medium do you use to carry the bits?
In the old days, that'd have been floppy disks, but the modern equivalent is USB flash drives, and plugging strange USB flash drives into your computer is a well-known security no-no.

When I was in the third grade, I once had a quiz in which one of the questions was what I should do if my parents told me to do something.
I answered that I would evaluate what they said and decide whether to do it.
This was marked as incorrect. The correct answer was to do what they say, no matter what.
This was perhaps my first clue that the human race is *deeply* unwell.

Backing up onto Zip disks seems unwise… 😬 Those things fell out of favor in part because of reliability issues.

Yeah, see, my secret is I don't worry about the genitals of people I'm not dating. 😂
My other secret is that I actually enjoy chatting with people. Especially if they're very different from me, because that's who has the most interesting stories to tell.

That price is nuts, but computer prices in general are nuts these days, so… 🤷‍♂️

Fiber seems to have finally solved that problem. Same bandwidth both ways.
Until now, I figured the bandwidth asymmetry of DSL and cable was some kind of intentional “consume, don't produce” design decision, but…well, fiber ISPs would be throttling upstream if that were the case, so I guess bandwidth asymmetry was nothing more than a technical trade-off this whole time?
Happy to see it, at any rate. Uploading a software build now takes seconds instead of minutes.

What other DRM-free game stores did you have in mind? I only know of GOG and itch.io.

2026-07-01 23:20:26 GMT

In light of the recent #Sony #PlayStation news, I'd like to remind everyone that GOG exists.
Every game there has no DRM. Once you buy one, no one can take it away from you. Not without breaking down your door and prying it from your cold dead hands, anyway.

A site that big runs on only three servers?? I'm impressed!
I mean, I knew #Forgejo was efficient—I run an instance myself—but I didn't know it was *that* efficient.

When I was a kid, there was one time when I saw something online that I found really disturbing. I remember it to this day.
You know what I did? I went to my mom and showed her. We discussed the situation, ultimately decided we weren't going to worry about it, and that was that.
Kids aren't idiots and they certainly don't need to all be subjected to digital house arrest until they're 18. What they need is for their parents to be available—not overworked and exhausted.

My users have no way of using the HTML as the body of the message. It's a desktop app that runs on your PC and doesn't have a server-based component, so it has no way to send emails on its own.
And even if it could, sending one of these reports as an email body would ruin the formatting. Outlook etc can't render advanced CSS worth beans. I'm not sure even Thunderbird would render it correctly.

So, I'm writing a reporting system for my employer's app. It generates reports in #HTML, which the user can look at, print, and save. They look great—modern #browsers are quite good at #typesetting.
But it occurs to me that some users might want to send these reports as #email attachments to colleagues.
To the #IT people on Fedi: is that going to be a problem? Is it common for email servers to block HTML attachments? If so, what do you suggest I do to work around that?

I…was not under the impression that any such experiments were happening.
What would even be the point? We already have tons of data from humans who changed gender of their own accord.
Also, sexual dimorphism in mice is completely different from humans, so the envisioned experiments would be useless anyway. Mice don't have boobs.

Hoo boy. I can read source code just fine, evaluate it in my head, understand the math. Looping, recursion, no problem.
But show me the equivalent function in mathematical notation, and I'm like 🫩🫠 may as well be the language of aliens from another galaxy.
Guess I should've studied harder in school instead of nerding out on the computer as a kid…
Please tell me I'm not the only one who's like this.

Looks like some #AI people have reinvented the acoustically-coupled modem.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EtNagNezo8w
That signal rate is extremely low, though. Even the 2400-baud modem of my childhood ran circles around this protocol. (Although to be fair it wasn't acoustically coupled.)

You know, if you need to prove that an Internet user is an adult (or a sufficiently sharp and resourceful kid), you don't need their face or ID or any of that.
Just ask them what 💾 is.

Yes, except that part. Obviously I only want one if I can run Linux on it!
