Swan: "Isn't it weird that people in Brunswick fill more ADHD prescriptions than Sunshine West? Must be because ADHD is cool and they're all faking it"
Me: NO IT'S NOT. IT'S BECAUSE ADHD PEOPLE ARE CHRONICALLY LATE AND CHRONICALLY UNDERSTIMULATED AND FALL APART IN OUTER SUBURBS

2026-04-21 04:47:55 GMT

Listeing to Norman Swan on an ABC podcast talking about Adult ADHD diagnoses and where they're most prevalent in Australia. He's pointing out that it's weird that it's more common in more "fashionable" suburbs, suggests that's misdiagnosis, and I think his reasoning might be slightly backwards.
ADHD people end up in the suburbs he's cited (Inner west sydney, blue mountains, Brunswick, Darebin) BECAUSE they have ADHD. We make life choices that end up influencing where we live *differently* to neurotypicals.
We WANT to live close to work because commutes are a living nightmare. We also want to live in interesting places because we crave positive stimulation. Just look at *my* residential history FFS.
When I moved to London, I deliberately spent a shitload of money to live in Regent's Park, where I could easily get to work on one train AND hit up my social circles in a short travel. Otherwise I'd be chronically late.
In Sydney, I ended up Inner West and Surry Hills for the same reasons, and I went INSANE when I moved outwards.
And to explain The Blue Mountains - I moved to Bright because I craved positive stimulation and Sydney was not doing it for me - a similar deal to the Blue Mountains.
We actively choose interesting places because living in a boring place and traveling to interesting places DOES NOT WORK FOR ADHD PEOPLE.

Mum and bub reunited & on the ward for recovery. Dad kicked out because visiting hours ended at 8. I got the first nappy change, first feed of formula and first difficult dress-the-baby-in-a-onesie because mum was being stabilised after theatre.

Well, today has been quite a thing.
Currently at Monash Hospital, in a waiting room outside the operating suites. Ash is in for an early version of the c-section that was planned for Wednesday.
We arrived early afternoon, went through the assessment and pain management phases, then everything totally kicked off at about 5pm. I’m not in the room right now - anaesthetic protocol doesn’t allow it if they use a general…
So “quite a thing” and only going to get more so.

Not so many years ago, computer users - like us - needed faster processors and more RAM because we literally couldn’t run what *we* needed in what we had.
These days it feels like computer users need more power and more storage because *developers* want it.
Browsers use gigabytes of RAM not because they’re giving users a better experience. They need it because corporate shitheads want to load a hundred third-party trackers in any given website.
Apps need 32GB of ram not because rendering a spreadsheet is hard, but because a pack of shithead developers poked with pitchforks by a bunch of shithead executives WANT TO STEAL YOUR ATTENTION AND YOUR DATA.
I think you understand my point here…

All other things being equal, the world is a much better place without Charlie Kirk in it.
Unfortunately, all other things are not equal. His scumbag allies are already using it for their own ends, and they're being helped by a fourth estate that's just throwing up its hands and saying "who knows??"
WE KNOW. The shooter in custody was a Groyper, a right wing arsehole, and a bigot with a shit eating grin who talked in code.
And there are still outlets uncritically echoing bullshit about "left wing and trans ideology".

The first 15 minutes of that AWS meetup was literally "AI AI AI", and nobody seemed annoyed that what's happening here is the ownership class consolidating "coding knowledge" into a bunch of giant data centers so they can disempower the uppity coding masses who they currently *need* to make their dystopian visions come true.
And the junior coding masses are lapping it up, because it makes it look like they can do software wheelies.
In fact, they're not doing software wheelies AT ALL.
Biff Jeezus's big computer in the sky is doing the wheelies, and as soon as their bosses realise they're now replacable because their "expertise" lives in a cloud service that can be rented for pennies on the dollar, those "engineers" are fucking GONE.

2025-07-19 03:54:56 GMT

Well, that was an interesting phone scam attempt.
Claimed to be from Telstra, dangled a 40% discount but very specifically didn't tell me what services I was using, if any. Read out a valid GMail address that I do still use for some services, and which has been involved in a few data leaks in the past.
Then told me to check my phone for a login code "from Telstra".
MFA code arrived *from Google*.
That seems suspiciously like someone trying to log in to or reset the password on my GMail account.
I was playing along just out of boredom, but I could see that catching someone out for sure.
Here's a tip:
ALWAYS HAVE MFA
but
NEVER READ OUT AN MFA CODE OVER THE PHONE.
Also: have a password manager, and have unique passwords for everything. And never trust phone calls.

Honestly I think I’ve found the most hilariously effective #ADHD anxiety fix ever.
When I find my brain starting a worry spiral, I take the topic that’s causing it, and write it on a dedicated to-do list.
The ADHD then takes care of that by never, ever thinking about it again.

At the tattoo place, ready to channel the Fourth Drowned, Alfred Pomeroy Jones, sealawyer.

2025-05-22 06:20:01 GMT

Booked in for a new tattoo on Saturday afternoon.
My artist likes to have the design 24hrs ahead, so I have a little time to decide, and *I'm accepting suggestions*.
My provisional idea is the simple phrase "Buttermilk and whippets", from Under Milk Wood by Dylan Thomas, possibly in cursive but probably in a classic book typeface (I'm going to play around with that later tonight to see how it looks).
Only proviso for suggestions is it has to be worksafe because this one will be visible in short sleeves. So do not suggest I get "autistic fuckwit" written across my forehead in gothic, as much as that might be a fitting suggestion.

#poly
Our first followup is in just under one week. We have a soft launch happening now to let everyone calm the fuck down, get used to the new world order and consider further steps. Small mistakes this week will lead to no major consequences beyond small, collaborative changes to the protocols, which include:
- Proper shared calendar, with considerations around privacy and flexibility. I have suggested titling it “Triple Advisor”
- Group chat notifications muted, especially our NSFW channel. Only check channels when it is appropriate to do so
- Inter-party messaging defaults to no-notifications channels, so that party A is not intruding on quality time between B&C and vice versa.
- Being careful with the words “we” and “us” because they could mean the nesting couple, the outer couple or all three depending on context and ambiguity. There has been conflict and misunderstanding on this issue before.
- Plenty of notice for schedule changes (super important for idiot autistic boy over here, because he cannot cope at all with schedule changes)
- Always try to assume positive intent, especially when something is ambiguous (a joke is not always a dagger between the ribs, folks)
- Everyone has the right to opt-out of a situation without being judged for it
- Longer blocks of personal and couple time for everyone
- lots of flexibility and space for when there is a lack of spoons, not only for the “officially disabled” one but for everyone. Nobody is obliged to do anything when they are strung out and close to limits except rest and look after themselves. And if one *is* in that situation, it doesn’t just default to “other couple” time. The spoon-deficient person must be given space, consideration and safety.
- robust protection around shared resources, like car, home, master bedroom, en-suite and so on, so that personal space, privacy and safety remain pristine. I am personally providing Uber credit for times when using the car will be contentious, for example
- robust, protected ability to break any and all comms rules in an actual emergency, and a way to quickly provide support (for which I will be provisioning an “emergency fund” debit card account)
Big mistakes in this coming week - especially repeat mistakes of the kind we have already highlighted - might well lead to firings, and everyone on the team has been made aware of that. We would all rather that didn’t happen if possible but a nuclear option and escape route has to be considered.
I am now accepting expressions of interest to act as your polycule’s Agile Coach. Rates available on request.

For further context, I have been threatening for some time to shatter this #poly thruple/triad thing we’ve had going on since January.
Yesterday I pulled the pin on the grenade, shouted “fire in the hole” and detonated the whole bunker. It was the only thing I had left to hand, so I asked my fiancee how long it would take her to move out, because that was what I wanted.
The considered, open, informed and consensual parts of the relationship had started to break, everyone was jumping to conclusions, getting angry, taking steps without forethought and generally fucking shit royally up. Things were happening for spite, doors were being slammed, mums were being summoned and nobody was happy.
Most of all, everyone had got so anxious and hypervigilant that even innocuous jokes to break the tension were being seen as vicious personal attacks.
So last night after much negotiation through the day, the three of us went to neutral but familar ground and thrashed things out.
And because I am a professional software team guy and, above all else, autistic as hell when under stress, I ran it very much like I would a Post-Incident Review after a major outage.
I recommend this approach, should you ever need it. Recognise the issues, identify the mistakes, assign NO personal blame, take no retributive action, keep focus on desired outcomes, give everyone space for input, consider all viewpoints on their merits and leave with concrete actions to prevent future incidents, while scheduling follow-ups to ensure the remedial actions have been executed and are working as intended.

I am very rarely enthused about seeing a movie in an actual cinema, but I just booked two LUX tickets for Nosferatu on New Year's Day, and we're absolutely going to suit up, take an Uber to the venue and get cocktailed up to fuck.
I don't think it'll be a patch on the original B&W movie at The Sydney Opera House with a live soundtrack by Darth Vegas, but nevertheless I intend to enjoy.

I don’t think it’ll fundamentally change much, but it would maybe allow me to be less hard on myself about how I react to some situations, and maybe avoid them in the first place?
Like having meltdowns in public because a noise happened, for instance.

well given that a GP part-timing behind the bar at a brewery spotted it in about ten minutes, I think it may be relatively obvious.

Since I’m lying down trying not to hurl, I finally got round to doing an online autism spectrum questionnaire, which a GP friend sent me like three months ago.
No substitute for an actual diagnosis, I know but it’s a baby step towards actually doing something.
Anyway I think I won.

Bonus thing that can fuck off:
- had a nice cup of ginger tea to settle my stomach. Mmmm, yummy ginger tea.
- Immediately threw it all up again
- Do I have sufficient exec function to clean it up?
- absolutely not
I’ll have another ritalin in a bit and hopefully I can recover this shitty day

It'll probably happen in the middle of the day while I'm in a work video meeting and I'll have to explain I'm logging off and taking the rest of the day because the death champagne just unlocked.
And I'd be fine with that tbh.

Thinking of doing a little IoT project with a mini fridge, an arduino, a controllable lock and a little news scanning Lambda function
Bottle of very nice champagne goes into mini fridge. Fridge is locked. Arduino calls out occasionally to a web service which maintains a list of complete fucking arseholes who aren't dead yet.
When one of them dies, the arduino sends a message to my phone, sets off a party popper and unlocks the fridge.

I don't know why but I am far less tolerant of unwanted sensory stimuli than when I was under 40.
I've been shrugging it off - post ADHD diagnosis - as "COVID took away my coping strategies", but... I dunno, maybe I was always like this but considered masking to be an acceptable trade-off?
Like, I can absolutely deal with a loud concert or nightclub _if I want to be there_. If the noise is incidental or unnecessary or unexpected, then I head rapidly down Panic Attack Alley.

I fleetingly just though about opening an archery/axe throwing/shooting venue for these events called “Objectively Dangerous Shit But You Will Not Die If You Follow The Rules” then realised no single neurotypical person would pay for that.

I just saw one of the staff literally “coaching” a couple of poor throwers from about 2m *in front of them* while their arms were raised ready to throw and that shit would not fly on an archery range.

Notes to self:
1. Axe throwing is not good
2. Throwing axes? That’s fine. It’s *axe throwing* that’s the problem
3. Guven the sensory overload I just experienced, I should definitely book in that ASD assessment I was told to get like three months ago.

I'm gonna be in Sydney for a few days next week but I've decided when I get back I'm going to practice making naan (gluten-free, naturally).
Never done one before, obviously don't have a tandoor at home, only a standard, not-hot-enough domestic oven, but I've found a couple of recipes that reckon you can do an acceptable version on a smoking hot skillet, which I definitely have under control.
Given that I've now pinned down a good version of Dal Makhani and Aloo Bonda, why wouldn't I expand the repertoire? That'll be a great little meal

It’s no wonder disabled people just opt-out of public life so much.
Completely infuriating, unjust, unnecessary and in many cases it’s flat-out fucking illegal. But the discrimination continues and I hate it.

The test is "do you vote for the fascist?"
The answer is ALWAYS NO. It is VERY SIMPLE. YOU SAY NO AND YOU VOTE THE OTHER WAY.
It's like they were handed a trolley problem with nobody on the main line, and minorities, women, immigrants, trans folks, the disabled and the the vulnerable on the siding. And they *pulled the fucking switch*.

First Piano lesson with a human this coming Monday.
I'm hoping my answer to the signup form wasn't too bizarre.
The question was something like "do you have musical experience and what are your goals?" and oh Jesus fucking H Christ don't ask neurodiverse people an open question like that. Because you end up with shit like this:
- Yes, I definitely have musical experience.
- Yes, I can play music, for a given value of music
- Yes, I have played live and I have had my horrible playing featured on national radio
- No, I'm shit at keyboard instruments, I know which note is which and I can use keyboards for background colour on recorded tracks but that's about it
- I have MANY OPINIONS ON WHAT MY GOALS SHOULD BE
- I can play the melody to Particle Man. Not on my accordion though, which annoys the fuck out of me. I can play it on Melodica, but I slur notes a lot.
- I would like to be able to play Oscillate Wildly by The Smiths
- I will get horrifyingly bored if we go too slow.
- I will get horrifyingly frustrated if we go too fast.
- I would like to be able to sing and play "Dead" by They Might Be Giants at any given public piano in a train station or airport.
- My left/right independence does not kick in immediately. I can't play a syncopated bass line then immediately go play a syncopated drum part. Because my hands and feet can't change modes. I can do the drum thing if I have a warm up, with like a 70% hit rate.
Too much. WAY TOO MUCH. Give me some multiple choice questions, that way I will not terrify the tutor
