Self-hosting Forgejo has been on my radar for a while. Can't exactly advocate for digital sovereignty while my source code lives on GitHub, eh?
Setup was quick - Canadian VPS, Docker, done in 30 minutes.
The real rabbit hole was custom templates, the usual CSS, and meta-tags :P

It's private for now, but honestly... we don't really have a Canadian Codeberg, do we? 🤔

Sam Altman said Trump was Hitler in 2016. Then he gave $1M to Hitler's inauguration because OpenAI's $830B valuation depends on his deregulation.
Canada's Bill C-11 protects these companies from Canadian competition. @npub1fdr…lvhs is right - repeal it, legalize jailbreaking, and go into business disenshittifying their garbage.

The problem isn't "too much software."
It's who owns the software, and what they optimized it for.
Healthcare isn't worse because of software. It's worse because healthcare software was built to maximize billing extraction, not patient outcomes.
Social media isn't worse because of software. But it was built to maximize engagement, not connection.
More proprietary closed #software built for profit extraction? Yeah, that'll keep making things worse.

Is the problem the software itself, or the people who own the software, and their perverse incentives to prioritize profit over all else?
Maybe Capitalism was the problem all along O___O
I don't think vibe coding will fix that by any means, especially since the LLM providers are part of that perverse profit incentive (on top of the myriad of other issues, of course).
I think more open-source/self-hostable software is good -- more propriety closed software is bad.

Inspired by the movement & website from @npub198d…vtld - a team of passionate & talented Canadians have gotten together with a similar goal:

Pictured below is a showcase of our politician tracker tool! You can view Federal, Provincial, and even Municipal politicians - copy their emails!
We are trying to get people to join the #Fediverse, that begins with us lobbying our politicians who want our votes!

Couldn't have said it better, @npub1fdr…lvhs
@npub1wjs…fy28 put #DigitalSovereignty on the table - and then showed up here on the Fediverse to prove he means it.
He's got my endorsement too. Remember, there's only 1 day left to get a membership and vote!!!

Question for my fellow #Fediverse #Tech enthusiasts:
Imagine your friend is on the fence about joining #Mastodon, and they ask:
"What is an instance, anyways?"
What is your go-to answer?
The email provider comparison is common, but maybe over-used, or too technical?
What other metaphors/explanations do you have up your sleeves?

That's crazy. I wonder why they are trying so hard to look decentralized, when under the hood they really aren't.
If they truly cared about decentralization, they would have implemented the already existing ActivityPub it became a W3C recommended standard in 2018...
Something fishy about bluesky. Thanks for sharing, I didn't know about this!

'If someone threatens to burn your house down unless you follow their orders, and then they burn your house down anyways, YOU DONT HAVE TO KEEP FOLLOWING THEIR ORDERS' - when referring to American tariffs.
All the claps and cheers, EU seems done with American bullying.
Now hopefully Canadian leadership can see that and stop pandering to the dipshit dictator
