@nprofile…y789 I still think that the length of a journey is the distance you travelled not the distance between start and end point.
I will happily accept your scenario as “farthest journey,” though.
(And yes, under this interpretation “longest journey” is meaningless and you would have to add in additional constraints which will always be arbitrary.)

@nprofile…y789 @nprofile…c7wn I don’t think you can do that as an individual. The national courts ask the ECJ for interpretation of EU law in these cases and then rule accordingly. Which didn’t happen here because there already was
a previous decision.
The plaintiff in this case only asked the court to determine the illegality of the checks (“Feststellungsklage auf Rechtswidrigkeit” in German). I seem to remember that all that happens if an official act is illegal is that the state is liable for damages, which isn’t going to be much in this case.

@nprofile…y789 @nprofile…c7wn Surely there must be consequences if the government ignores rulings? I guess I should have paid more attention in administrative law 101 at uni.

Speaking of German border checks, the Bavarian Administrative Court has ruled that the reasons provided for continuously extending border checks with Austria are insufficient and the checks thus illegal.
The lower court had previously rejected the complaint by a German citizen living in Austria at the time but the higher court revised that rejection and then ruled that the identity checks were in fact illegal.
The federal government can appeal the ruling to the Federal Administrative Court.
If you want to read about all sorts of fun technicalities of German administrative law and European law, here is the ruling, obviously in German: https://www.vgh.bayern.de/mam/gerichte/bayvgh/presse/25a00901u.pdf

Dear everyone! It would be wonderful if you could mark links to paywalled articles as such – something simple like “($)” is more than good enough. Maybe we can make this part of the quiet Mastodon etiquette?
It is super frustrating to get a link to an article that sounds interesting, go there, click away the cookie banner,* then click away the newsletter popup, finally start reading and then the text fades out.
* I am aware there are tools for that.

The Eurostar terminal in Amsterdam, which they had to close so urgently that there weren’t London-bound Eurostars for months, is still here and now serves as a cantina for Strukton. I wonder why they couldn’t have kept it until the new terminal was ready at least. Lack of emergency egress or ingress because of the bridge works perhaps?

@nprofile…zywc @nprofile…y789 It’s not really about friction, but having fewer axles per given train length reduces the unsprung weight. An axle weighs about a ton, so this is quite relevant. Plus, the running gear is one of the most maintenance heavy parts, so saving on bogies is good for operational cost.

Before the Great Belt fixed link, railway ferries carried trains between the Danish islands of Sealand and Funen between Korsør and Nyborg.
But in some winters the sea was frozen so thick, particularly the harbour in the bay of Nyborg, that the ferries couldn’t operate.
So, short branch lines were build to Halsskov and Knudshoved from where passengers and goods could be carried over the frozen sea by ice boats, essentially sleighs with a sail. This happend in 1887/8 and 1892/3.
Later, piers were built in Halsskov and Knudshoved and ice breakers kept a passage open between them during the strong winters of 1922/3 and 1928/9.
In the 1950s, both Halsskov and Knudshoved became ports for car ferries and the railways disappeared.

@nprofile…lxup The fun thing is: there are already eurobalises there but they seem to be used for switching the train protection system only. Presumably, the balises for switching electric traction need to be in slightly different places – and you might want to do some testing to avoid the Aachen situation where the Flirts didn’t like the placement of certain balises.
For reference, the rules for all German cross-border sections are here: https://www.dbinfrago.com/web/schienennetz/netzzugang-und-regulierung/regelwerke/betrieblich-technisch_regelwerke/betrieblich_technisches_regelwerk-13174542

@nprofile…lxup Good question. My understanding is that a lot of the certification hinges on it having to be state of the art and the regulator is fairly flexible in defining what that exactly means.
Here’s a posting by the boss of TRI about how they added NBÜ to their old class 110. https://www.drehscheibe-online.de/foren/read.php?002,9274490
They essentially asked for an exception because the state of the art doesn’t make sense for their scenario. It is entirely possible that Alstom was aiming in that direction, too, but then something changed and they couldn’t get that exception any more.
Maybe that change in 2024 was EBA rejecting their application for an exception?

2025-11-10 09:12:12 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…lxup Someone mentioned here earlier that they think the reason is that older forms of emergency brake override (Notbremsüberbrückung) are not permissible any more. This would match the article talking about emergency brakes.
From what I can find this seems to be about “NBÜ 2004” which was introduced since the traditional system reacts to slowly to avoid an emergency stop at slow speeds.
One possibility is that older forms were still accepted transitionally but that that changed after the incidents mentioned in the article.

@nprofile…lxup @nprofile…8cht I guess as a government agency, they would pick the most conservative route. That’s also kind of what they say. Virgin has the cash for what little they plan, which happens to fit exactly into what is available, they gave the most details about their train.
What the ORR overlooked is that Virgin’s train doesn’t exist and Alstom has a terrible track record as of late. In that sense, you could argue that Virgin is the least likely to actually start service in the given time frame which was the most important criterion.

Turns out it wasn’t Mussolini who made the trains run on time but Ferrari.
Let me explain. And by explain I mean “greatly oversimplify.”
Back in 2006, Luca di Montezemolo, chairman of Ferrari (among other things), was so fed up with the state of Italian railway services that he decided to create a private operator. Getting this off the ground was one formidable uphill battle, but one of the side effects was that Trenitalia realised they needed to get their act together.
And, lo and behold, performance did improve and, somehow, they also applied what they’d learned to local services where there wasn’t any competition.
And so it happens that by and large, trains are running on time rather than basically always being fifteen minutes late for no reason at all.

@nprofile…c5n8 I can’t read the full article, is this intended for all their TER or for select lines?

@nprofile…c5n8 You’ve probably seen it, but it says for Stockholm “17:31 (NY PRELIMINÄR AVGÅNGSTID KL 19:00).”

@nprofile…c5n8 I vaguely remember there being a guarantee that they will send another bus if you can’t get on but I can’t find anything about that just now.

@nprofile…c5n8 This is why I am wary of doing this trip.
When I went from Narvik to Tromsø, the bus was also completely full but it was also dark and because of a snow storm, it took an hour longer.

@nprofile…c5n8 Huh! How is that train leaving later and arriving earlier?

@nprofile…c5n8 bahn.expert has 70 minutes and “Warten auf Anschlussreisende” as well as “Verspätete Bereitstellung.”*
Not sure whether they expect more trouble with the train bringing all the passengers from Berlin?

Nine hours is a pretty spectacular delay.
(The bridge in Rendsburg was closed from 23:05 for engineering works which presumably was why the train was scheduled 45 minutes earlier than usual to make it through before curfew. But it wasn’t to be.)

@nprofile…c5n8 Do you know the reason for the delay? This really is getting ridiculous.

@nprofile…c5n8 Naming is super hard, but NOx is the usual abbreviation for the nitrogen oxides, something a fair share of their target group will be aware of and making their eyes twitch a little.
And yet still not the worst name of a railway startup …

@nprofile…c5n8 Yeah, but what sales cooperation would that be? Didn’t they kill all of that when Eurostar changed their sales systems?

@nprofile…c5n8 "Die schon jetzt bestehende vertriebliche Kooperation mit Eurostar wollen wir gerne ausweiten und begrüßen daher die Beschaffung neuer Züge seitens Eurostar.”
Huh? Did I miss something?

@nprofile…c5n8 Those used to be everywhere. I remember being on a night train to the High Tatras as a kid and it being great to be able to know where you were.
