Hey folks, there has been a fair bit of discussion this week regarding what the community expects from data dumps, and I've realised that obfuscating WiFi AP identifiers may actually be interfering with what the community wants: portable, open data - not some restrictive binary blob.
How would people feel if AP MAC+SSIDs were plaintext in the dumps, instead of obfuscated like originally planned? If an AP moved, it would still be blocked from the database for at least a year to prevent tracking.

We just hit 800k cell towers?!? This jump in new cell towers being discovered is actually crazy. Thanks everyone ❤️

Are you a fellow Australian interested in open data? If so, @npub198r…dku3 and I are starting up libre.net.au - a new online community to collect, publish and analyse datasets down under. 🇦🇺
We're currently collecting raw pricing data for Aldi, Coles and Woolworths, and we've just started working on an open database of grocery products to support tracking and comparing prices across #Australia.
Come join us on Matrix!

Not directly, as OpenCellID data is licensed under CC BY SA and I'd like to keep the data BeaconDB distributes as open as possible (preferably CC0).
I'm sure that people will combine data that will be distributed with OpenCellID though.

BeaconDB just hit 10 *million* WiFi networks!!! 🎉
I honestly can't believe the amount of data that has been submitted (thank you!), and I'm really excited to see what the future holds for this project <3
Now that there are more contributors, I've increased the detail shown on the map by another level: https://beacondb.net/map/

BeaconDB is now well over 5 million networks, at 5.5M!! The community has been collecting data at an incredible speed and is now submitting ~100k new networks per day. 😎
@npub1faz…92lv has built a website you can use to see how BeaconDB has grown over the past few months. Check it out: https://beacondb.derpingu.in/
