#Bitcoin bear markets are tough, but they have nothing on Japanese markets.
In the late 80's, Japan experienced a major bubble in stocks and real estate. Japanese stocks (the Nikkei 225) peaked on December 29, 1989, then had an awful drawdown of 82% over a 20 year period.

This is the most bullish #Bitcoin chart anywhere on the internet.
The world is massively short dollars.
From Parker Lewis article, Bitcoin is Not a Hedge:
“Today, there is approximately $92 trillion in dollar-denominated debt in the U.S. credit system but there are “only” $9 trillion actual dollars. Despite the money supply having increased by nearly 10x since before the financial crisis, there remains over $10 of dollar-denominated debt for every dollar that exists today. Only dollars can pay dollar-denominated debt and in this context, dollar debt only includes the most vanilla of anything that could be considered debt; bonafide fixed maturity, fixed liability debt as estimated and reported by the Fed. Mortgages, credit card, student loan, auto loan, bank debt, corporate bonds and federal, state and local government debt, etc. It does not include estimates of unfunded pension liabilities or derivatives of debt–merely a fixed amount of dollars owed at a defined future point in time. The United States is lucky to have the world reserve currency but it comes at a cost, a structural trade deficit.
The US has not had a single year of trade surplus since 1975.

1971 the US abandoned the gold standard and adopted the petrodollar system.
Under the petrodollar system, oil producing countries such as Saudi Arabia and Kuwait are required to price and sell their oil in US dollars. In exchange they receive protection from the US military of key trading routes.
Since oil is a key input for any economy, foreign countries are forced to hold US dollars in order to purchase oil from oil producing nations. This creates a constant demand for the dollar, and as a result, a structurally strong dollar relative to other currencies.
A strong dollar creates a situation where US exports become unaffordable to other countries, and imported goods/services become more affordable to the United States.

Comparing major #Bitcoin cycles: All time high, to bottom, back to the all time high.

Usage of the Bank Term Funding Program (BTFP) increased to over $103 Billion last week.
There appears to be no functional limit on how large the facility may grow, even though it was created with a headline number of just $25B.

In 2022 and 2023, the Fed rapidly increased interest rates from 0% to over 5%.
The banks, which had bought US Treasury bonds prior to the interest rate hikes, are now significantly underwater on their investment because of the high interest rates which caused the value of their bond holdings to drop significantly.
The BTFP was created by the Fed to shore up the insolvent the banking sector after the bank failures in March which began with Silicon Valley Bank.

Unpopular opinion: The US has been in a “depression” since 2008 when interest rates hit 0%.
It just doesn’t feel that way to most people because the economy has had a band-aid on it in the form of non-stop Quantitative Easing which has inflated asset prices, and created a positive wealth effect.
Debts are higher than in 2008, and the Fed still hasn’t let the economy deleverage like it naturally wants(needs) to.

CarGurus used Car Index:
According to the index, used car prices are up 2% in the last month, and have increased the last 3 months consecutively.
Used car prices are at the same level they were in October of 2021, before the Fed even started raising interest rates.
My thoughts: higher interest rates means higher financing cost for used cars. Higher financing costs means lower demand. Lower demand for used cars means lower prices. 😅
At least that is what I thought would happen with high interest rates. But I've been wrong on this so far.

It's been 552 days since #Bitcoin price was at it's all time high price of ~$69k. In the previous two cycles, it took 1,126 and 1,083 days for the price to recover back to the all time high price.
$BTC experienced it's most mild drawdown of "only" 77% in the current cycle.
Despite a larger market cap, $BTC only took 378 days to find a bottom, which is in line with the previous two cycles in terms of length.

Barrels of Crude Oil in the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve(SPR):
The SPR was drawn down for 17 months in a row, which contributed to a lower CPI inflation number.
As of the latest reading, the drain has finally stopped; with barrels of crude oil in the SPR stabilizing at 372 million, or about 19 days of supply at current levels of consumption.

The interest expense to service outstanding debt will soon exceed $1 trillion in the US.
To put this into context: $1 trillion is greater than the $767 billion spent on defense in 2022, and more than double the $475 billion spent on interest expense during the same year.
The sharp rise in interest expense was directly caused by the rapid increase of interest rates from the Fed (from 0% to 5%).
Making this worse, the Fed is expected to raise interest rates a further 0.25% this Wednesday.
There is just too much debt. IMO we are in the beginning of a debt spiral. The only way the US can pay down it's debt is... by issuing more debt. Expect high inflation for a long time.

Many people believe that the US is spending TOO MUCH on defense, which leads to overspending, huge deficits, and debts.
The data says otherwise.
The US gets it's income from taxes, and uses that money to fund it's spending programs. Tax income growth has outpaced spending for defense from 1971 until now (shown in the chart below).
In my opinion the bigger issue is that the US is not spending *enough* for defense.

Aging demographics are a big problem for the United States.
Spending on Medicare is one the biggest contributors to the US's over-spending problem.
Over the past several decades, the growth in spending for Medicare has far outpaced the growth in income that the US receives through taxation.
Specifically since 1971, US's income from taxes(bold black line) has 26X'd, but spending on Medicare has 190X'd.
Income from taxation is not growing fast enough to keep up with this level of spending.

The VIX today closed at similar levels to what it experienced during the peak of the equites bull market in January 2022.
The Volatility Index (VIX) or "fear gauge", is a tool used to measure uncertainty in equity markets.

The US government is adding to the national debt at an astonishing rate.
So far this fiscal year(Oct 22 until now), the Federal government has ran a budget deficit of $1.1 trillion, or 65% more than the same time last year.
In total, the budget deficit for 2022 was $1.4 trillion. At the current rate, the budget deficit will be $2.3 trillion for 2023. Near emergency COVID levels.
The main driver of the increased budget deficit is the increase in the interest expense paid by the US Treasury to service it's outstanding debt. The interest expense increases as the Fed raises interest rates, which they have done since early 2022.

The world is severely short #Bitcoin .
19.4 million total $BTC are in circulation, or about 92% of the 21 million bitcoin that will *ever* be mined. Only 8% of the supply is still up for grabs.
#Bitcoin stands alone as the only significant proof-of-work asset, it's 21 million supply cap is actually credible, and it's invention can't be replicated.
Everyone needs Bitcoin whether they know it yet or not, because it's the strongest form of property a person can own. Eventually, everyone will catch on to this.
I estimate that than 1% of people truly understand #Bitcoin and are buying as much of the supply as they possibly can, holding, and not selling at any price.
What happens to the $BTC price when the other 99% of people decide they want to get their hands on the remaining 8% of the supply?

Real Yield on 1 year U.S. Treasuries (yield minus CPI):
*Almost* a positive real yield.
Note that this is based on the official CPI data which is manipulated (lower) by the BLS through periodic adjustments to how CPI is calculated.
Using the current official CPI measurement, rate hikes appear to have nearly caught up to inflation, with a near 0% real yield.
However, using the original 1980 CPI methodology, real yields are still significantly negative at -8%.

What if everything since 2008 that we call our wealth, is just wealth effects created from nonstop Quantitative Easing (QE), combined with 0% interest rates?
During the run up to the Great Financial Crisis(GFC) in 2008-09, the S&P only reached the same level (around 1500) that it had achieved 8 years prior in the dot com bubble; then the market crashed during the crisis.
Markets were only saved by 0% interest rates and the introduction of a new Fed tool, Quantitative Easing, which was originally intended to be a temporary measure to stabilize the economy during the GFC. However, the Fed never stopped doing QE.
Markets have ripped since then, the US has taken on even more debt.
Ray Dalio followers:
Dalio claims that the end of the last long term debt cycle was in 2008 during the GFC, but the economy has not deleveraged, only become more leveraged since then with the introduction of QE.
I don't see how we can call an end to the long term debt cycle until the stock market can achieve new all time highs *without* any new rounds of QE, interest rates that are >0%, all while the economy becomes less leveraged as measured by Debt/GDP ratio.
Please comment if you have a different perspective, or believe I'm wrong in my thinking.

The red labels are rounds of announced Quantitative easing (QE) to show the effect that QE has on the US debt position.

The next #Bitcoin supply halving is about 1 year away (est. April 2024).
After the supply halving, $BTC will have a stock-to-flow ratio that is lower than even Gold.
Bitcoin's market cap is currently less than 10% of Gold's market cap. If the Bitcoin market cap was to match that of Gold, it would imply a BTC price of $310,000.
Which is still conservative because Bitcoin is at least 10X better than gold as a store of value.
IMO the halving is not priced in.
