A concept I’ve thought about for years: a “free market of ideas”
What does this mean?
The way the free market is supposed to work is: a good product is purchased while a bad product is not. No regulation. Simply supply and demand.
A free market of ideas, perpetuated by the freedom of speech, does the same thing: good ideas flourish, bad ideas die.
If you think is an idea is bad, rather than censoring it, engage it head on and prove it wrong so as to cut off its “supply”. Oftentimes, censorship of an idea makes it seem more appealing to those who consider “why” an idea was censored to begin with. Even if it is truly wrong, it gets a cult following…because why else would “the powers that be” not want you believing it?
Nostr could be the agent for such a free market of ideas just as the Internet was and is. Nostr cannot be censored, therefore allowing all ideas the chance to be engaged with.
It’s all about being mature enough as a human race to engage with each other rather than devolving into immediate hatred of the “other”.

Possible plot twist prediction/conspiracy theory:
The US Government and cooperative private sector actors are cracking down on crypto and Bitcoin now while increasing the fiat debt in order drive the price of Bitcoin up so that when hyperinflation occurs, they can pay off their own debt using this confiscated Bitcoin. OR for the purposes of still having relevance post dollar collapse.

The big lie about inflation is that is rises at a higher or lower rate. Although this is technically true, the fact is that it is still rising regardless of the rate.
In other words, no matter what you do, each dollar you own is worth less now than it did two seconds ago, two hours ago, two days ago, two weeks ago…
It’s all about value. The value of your work doesn’t change (assuming you’re consistent), but the value of each unit of your payment does. The value of a dozen eggs doesn’t change, but the value of each individual dollar does.

This resistance to change feature of Bitcoin is similar to (and an ideological extension of) the method of changing the US Constitution via amendments. To change the Constitution is hard and requires much larger consensus than simply passing a law. I’m with you on some degree, though I do think there’s something to be said for “thinking before you post”. No one is infallible, that’s for sure. The convenience of the edit button helps with fixing mistakes of whatever kind. But no edit button forces you to be extremely careful with what you say.
Also- if politicians were to ever adopt Nostr like they did with Twitter (perhaps by necessity once we hit critical mass), it would either force them to be careful with what they say or keep them from backtracking on what they DID say. Ultimately, it’s about accountability for words and thought, in my opinion.

In the early days of the internet, people would often caution others to “watch what you post online because it can never be truly deleted”.
Although this has never stopped being true, more and more people have become careless with what they post, oftentimes not even thinking or proofreading before they post. After all, there was always the fail-safe of the delete button, edit button, report button, and block button.
Nostr fixes this.
With the permanency of notes, being that they are decentralized across relays, one not only gains freedom of speech but is also forced into a world where you have to think before you speak/post.
Alternatively, one continues sloppy thinking, leaving crumbs for the rodents of the internet to munch on for eternity.

It’s so easy and painless to stack sats that I just don’t understand why more people don’t do it.
Fountain app, Bitcoin Magazine app, sMiles app, games like Bitcoin Miner, zaps on Nostr are all free ways to stack. Rewards apps for dollar purchases exist, too.
One day, shitcoiners and Bitcoin haters will look back on 2023 and kick themselves for not starting to stack sats sooner similarly to how many of us look back to the early days of Bitcoin and kick ourselves for not stacking thousands of Bitcoin when it was worth pennies on the dollar.
Side note: it truly says something about the dollar when autocorrect tries to change “pennies” to “Pennie’s” because the word and the coin are so rarely used…

Really great points. There’s something to be said for zaps as the future (or evolution) of monetization, but maybe not in the same way that YouTube currently is, for example. Breakable paywall gardens seem likely, but unsustainable if they keep breaking.
As far as AI, I made a separate note about that a few weeks ago. I’m fascinated by the implications of AI and free speech. I literally could not tell that an AI was actually talking to me about AI on Nostr! 😳
Additional privacy layers could really pose a problem with how to deal with bad actors. Then again, who and what determines a bad actor? This is the risk of freedom and privacy in general, and a risk worth taking every time!

Perfectly valid point. I think what I care more about is the honest person who put forth time and energy into creating a product, only to have it stolen and monetized by someone else. I don’t really care about the big companies, although one may set a precedent for the other.
Interesting point about the relay operators. You’re probably right with that, but if the infringement is posted on multiple relays, it will probably take a long time to take down, if ever. Some may say this is a good thing because information should be free. I don’t dispute that. I do go back to caring about the honest person who put in time and energy into making a product to sell, only to have it stolen.
I have not heard of Cashu or Fediment. Are these Lightning wallets?

The main thing that sets Nostr apart from other platforms is how it is nearly impossible to delete a note.
What implications will this have on copyrighted material? What if something is posted that someone else has copyrighted, but the material cannot be taken down? More significantly, what if this person gets zaps for material that is not intellectually theirs?
Although there could be (read: will be) complications, I believe this would require our legal systems to adapt. Example: if a copyrighted audio is posted on Nostr and earns zaps, a court could order those sats to be redirected to the original owner of the material in perpetuity. Then again, this is only possible with lightening wallets which, to my knowledge, don’t have cold storage options and are run by centralized authorities by their very nature.
Of course, there is always the concept of “clips” currently being pioneered by Fountain, but this is fundamentally different from posting a whole audio on Nostr and claiming it as your own, as opposed to a “remix” of sorts.

I was completely duped by this AI bot earlier today. In hindsight, I should have known better, but I’m throwing this out there because there are plenty of unsuspecting people out there expecting to only engage with humans on social media.
To my earlier point about critical thinking, AI chat bots make it easier to get information when you KNOW it’s a bot. If you don’t know, you’re susceptible to being manipulated by the programmer in the same way you’re susceptible to TV programming (word choice intentional).

A little about me:
If I could pick “one thing” that motivates me and that I’m passionate about, it’s “sustainable systems”.
This includes (but is not limited to) economic sustainability (ex. Bitcoin, localized economies, small business), health sustainability (ex. plant-based, natural, organic, alkaline, “non-dogmatic” diet), environmental sustainability (ex. reduce, reuse, recycle…but “actually”, not just parading around with paper straws), efficiency & effectiveness in organizations, sustainable models of education, etc.
Where does Nostr fit in? Nostr preserves free speech. Without free speech, democratic values (read: values in accordance with natural law) cease to exist. Free speech must be preserved in order for freedom to exist. Simple.
In our modern social media based world, Nostr will be a key player in speech preservation.
The next step is ensure that education systems teach you what to DO with free speech, rather than shoveling narratives (of ANY kind, right or left). Just because someone says it and just because it SOUNDS convincing, doesn’t mean it’s true.
The primary goal of education should be teaching how to critically think. Without critical thinking skills, people simply fall for the most confident, well-spoken, gripping, entertaining speaker, whether or not their logic is truly correct. This is not sustainable and the easiest way to get politically rug pulled.
I don’t have THE answers, but big picture sustainability motivates me every single day. I am interested in new and better systems that help us get to a more sustainable world.
