Last Notes npub1atr7ukz435rz5eyzjzldc5zpav95jptckpvx9fegdvekv8p8rq6q5r88v5 fancysandwiches Our oil reserves are at the lowest since 1983, we have 298 million barrels left. But we need at least 70 million to keep the systems operational. But also, and this part is a little confusing, a little over 100M barrels unavailable due to equipment failures. What's not clear to me is if that 100M includes the 70M number, or if that means we actually have 170M less available to us. That could mean we have as little as 158M left. Trump ordered 172M be released in March, so if he orders another drawdown we may have functionally zero left in the strategic reserve, which would then give Iran even more leverage than before. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/08/10/oil-in-strategic-petroleum-reserve-falls-below-300-million-barrels-lowest-since-1983.html npub1atr7ukz435rz5eyzjzldc5zpav95jptckpvx9fegdvekv8p8rq6q5r88v5 fancysandwiches The Hank Green situation is not surprising. I saw this shit coming miles away. First it was the interview with Nat Soares, the co-author of an AI Doomer book with Eliezer Yudkowsky. Then it was (the same week I think?) a SciShow video on the same subject, paid for by some AI Doomer / Rationalist group. Then there was the Cal Newport interview where Hank Kept conflating Machine Learning Image Detection models used in healthcare with LLMs, where Cal had to repeatedly tell him to stop conflating LLMs with other technology. More abstractly there was also that knitting video where the script was absolutely riddled with inaccuracies, some of which were easily verifiable. There's no way to prove that the script was AI, but the way it got the information wrong, while conveying it with confidence, is a strong tell. The mistakes in that video were very, very, similar to mistakes I've seen LLMs make first hand. npub1atr7ukz435rz5eyzjzldc5zpav95jptckpvx9fegdvekv8p8rq6q5r88v5 fancysandwiches @nprofile…gent fully automated luxury space communism implies that everyone is equal. These shitheads want a hierarchy. npub1atr7ukz435rz5eyzjzldc5zpav95jptckpvx9fegdvekv8p8rq6q5r88v5 fancysandwiches I've been looking for a good MIDI to CV interface for well over a year now. I'd prefer something external to my case, but I'm flexible. The one I want the most is the Intellijel MIDI 1U with the Intellijel CVx 1U expander. Unfortunately I can't find anywhere that has the CVx module in stock (new or used). Elektron did announce their Outbox 8, which would qualify (I use a Digitakt 2 as my main sequencer), but honestly I want more than 8 CV outs. I'm hoping to drive 3 voices (gate + pitch + modulation), or two voices with additional modulation CVs. Dear fellow #eurorack enthusiasts, please offer guidance. npub1atr7ukz435rz5eyzjzldc5zpav95jptckpvx9fegdvekv8p8rq6q5r88v5 fancysandwiches If you post to the photography or painting related hashtags with shit you made with AI you get blocked on site. I see a few people talk about it on Fedi, but I would expect that from Fedi. Very few people I talk to about this seem to give a shit, and the fact that Microsoft isn't constantly being publicly dragged through the mud for fucking up the reliability of GitHub is not a good sign for the industry. npub1atr7ukz435rz5eyzjzldc5zpav95jptckpvx9fegdvekv8p8rq6q5r88v5 fancysandwiches @nprofile…6g7u I do the same thing all the time and I gave in for Windrose with no regrets yet npub1atr7ukz435rz5eyzjzldc5zpav95jptckpvx9fegdvekv8p8rq6q5r88v5 fancysandwiches @nprofile…vvv8 I believe you are correct, and for me it further cements the idea that OpenAI and Anthropic are quite screwed. Anthropic has been slowly but surely ramping up how quickly users hit daily and weekly limits and I feel like they're on the brink of hitting the threshold where they lose a ton of their users permanently. Especially with the Claude Code source leak leading to what are roughly a bunch of forks. We've already kind of seen this play out with the folks who are most AI-pilled using OpenClaw, they're starting to see the value in the very cheap models. That idiot who blew through a ton of money overnight just figuring out if it was the morning yet did not solve their problem with cron or something reasonable, they solved their problem with cheaper models (still orders of magnitude more expensive than cron). npub1atr7ukz435rz5eyzjzldc5zpav95jptckpvx9fegdvekv8p8rq6q5r88v5 fancysandwiches @nprofile…2s3w oh that is a useful reference! Thank you! npub1atr7ukz435rz5eyzjzldc5zpav95jptckpvx9fegdvekv8p8rq6q5r88v5 fancysandwiches Related question: Have you used "open ear" earbuds while doing tasks like mowing a lawn with an electric mower? Is that reasonably possible without cranking the volume so high that I damage my ears? Or do I really need to go with an in ear earbud? I struggle with in ear stuff as they all irritate my ear canal. I'm looking for earbuds because over ear headphones are way too uncomfortable to wear during the summer while doing yard work, or while working out. Boosts welcome, but please only reply if you have actual experience, not speculation. Assume I am already knowledgeable about headphones, I have 4 pairs I regularly use that vary in price from ~$150 to ~$1,000 USD, I am really only looking for a specific answer to my problem. npub1atr7ukz435rz5eyzjzldc5zpav95jptckpvx9fegdvekv8p8rq6q5r88v5 fancysandwiches I have a really specific request, hoping Fedi can help! I'm in the market for a new pair of earbuds for working out and doing yard work (mostly mowing my lawn with an electric mower). Maybe it's perfect. Maybe it's not. Even if it's a perfect replica, if a CVE is discovered in the dependency you copied you're not going to be alerted, and you're not going to be able to just bump the version you depend on to get the fix. Your dependencies will also stagnate. You're not focused on developing them, you're focused on developing your product. You're not going to benefit from the new things added to future versions of the dependency that you just copied. You may miss out on new features that make your codebase easier to use, more performant, or easier to maintain. npub1atr7ukz435rz5eyzjzldc5zpav95jptckpvx9fegdvekv8p8rq6q5r88v5 fancysandwiches I've been reducing the amount of dependencies that my work projects have every year. I plan on continuing to reduce the amount of dependencies we have. There isn't a world where I'm going to just start having an LLM fabricate them for me instead. I'm just reducing the need for dependencies. I don't want to suddenly have to maintain them myself. npub1atr7ukz435rz5eyzjzldc5zpav95jptckpvx9fegdvekv8p8rq6q5r88v5 fancysandwiches @nprofile…f7tc Wow fuck that. I've seen this argument from at least three distinct people now, and I just don't know how you could come to that result, even if LLMs were perfect there's still one million reasons why you'd want dependencies. npub1atr7ukz435rz5eyzjzldc5zpav95jptckpvx9fegdvekv8p8rq6q5r88v5 fancysandwiches Super Battle Golf: Also good with complete strangers npub1atr7ukz435rz5eyzjzldc5zpav95jptckpvx9fegdvekv8p8rq6q5r88v5 fancysandwiches @nprofile…8y8d oh! Most of the time this would mean "upon release". Sometimes this could be during R&D, prior to release. For example: the purpose of Hyperloop was to prevent high speed rail from being built in California. It accomplished this goal without a system ever being built and generally available to the public. Test tracks were built. Prototypes were made. There is no Hyperloop station that a person can use today. npub1atr7ukz435rz5eyzjzldc5zpav95jptckpvx9fegdvekv8p8rq6q5r88v5 fancysandwiches @nprofile…zhky yes, and the biggest influence for this change is arguably Dick Cheney. It costs billions, yes, but that has already been earmarked for our military. Our military budget is huge, and the military doesn't even have to publicly state why they need as much money as they claim they need, there is some congressional oversight, but it's definitely not enough. It's pretty well known that our military would never, ever, pass a financial audit of any kind. If we were to officially enter a war, with an indefinite timeline associated with it, then yes, there would probably be additional budgetary requests from the military. Seems like this is a lot less likely to just settle down than what happened with the previous strikes, or Venezuela, so it does feel like we will officially be at war in the near future (near = sometime during the remainder of Trump's term). npub1atr7ukz435rz5eyzjzldc5zpav95jptckpvx9fegdvekv8p8rq6q5r88v5 fancysandwiches @nprofile…jnzr Super Battle Golf for sure npub1atr7ukz435rz5eyzjzldc5zpav95jptckpvx9fegdvekv8p8rq6q5r88v5 fancysandwiches @nprofile…6e68 OMG, what a shot! npub1atr7ukz435rz5eyzjzldc5zpav95jptckpvx9fegdvekv8p8rq6q5r88v5 fancysandwiches @nprofile…a8fw making them pay does not remove the environmental damage npub1atr7ukz435rz5eyzjzldc5zpav95jptckpvx9fegdvekv8p8rq6q5r88v5 fancysandwiches I understand why LLM enthusiasts don't want to acknowledge that their tools use a ton of energy, but it's really frustrating to see people try to downplay the energy usage ("it's so low per single prompt that it doesn't really matter!") while also constantly seeing news like this: https://techcrunch.com/2026/02/19/softbank-to-spend-an-eye-popping-33b-to-build-huge-u-s-gas-power-plant/ If these tools don't use a ton of energy, then why are companies like SoftBank building the largest natural gas power plant in the US? I'm directly saying that "this change that YOU made needs to be corrected". I'm always assigning the output of the AI to the person who put me in the position of reviewing the work. It is their responsibility to read the code that they're trying to review, they are responsible for 100% of the code, so they also get 100% of the blame when it's bad. If a change is confusing or nonsensical I'll ask "why did YOU make this change?". I'll never ask why an AI made a change, that we cannot know. All we can know is why someone thought it was acceptable to ship garbage, and we can assign them the responsibility for the garbage that they're willing to ship npub1atr7ukz435rz5eyzjzldc5zpav95jptckpvx9fegdvekv8p8rq6q5r88v5 fancysandwiches @nprofile…nptm @nprofile…gyr4 I think it's pretty unreasonable to ask that every developer of a Fedi project support every feature of every other product. Not an enjoyable space. npub1atr7ukz435rz5eyzjzldc5zpav95jptckpvx9fegdvekv8p8rq6q5r88v5 fancysandwiches @nprofile…faq9 I've seen that, and some of it is that. There is also a lot of AI generated content on YouTube shorts. I think that's what makes this so bad, they're taking stuff that artists are making, and then putting this AI layer over it, without their consent. This makes it harder for an otherwise discerning viewer to know if they're watching an artist they like, or some AI ripoff. It could also start making people think that artists are using AI, when they're not. This could have a huge impact on someone's reputation. It could also make consumers more willing to try AI products if they think their favorite artists are using AI, which of course benefits Google, the provider of AI products. npub1atr7ukz435rz5eyzjzldc5zpav95jptckpvx9fegdvekv8p8rq6q5r88v5 fancysandwiches Apparently YouTube is using some sort of AI tool to upscale/downscale YouTube shorts, making things that are real look like they've been generated by an LLM. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86nhP8tvbLY Seems to me like a great way to make the general public be ok with AI content. If you make the real stuff look like it was AI generated, you won't think twice when you actually see an AI generated video. YouTube is incentivized in having you watch as many videos as possible on their platform, whether or not they're AI generated doesn't really matter, Ad impressions matter. It's interesting that they've chosen to start using this technology on shorts, which is the part of their platform that seems to have the most AI generated content. Even if this isn't done on purpose to make people feel more comfortable with AI content, that is absolutely going to be the effect, and that will benefit Google. There are few incentives here for Google to do the right thing. They have a monopoly and they're using it to their advantage (just like they did when they knowingly made Google Search worse). npub1atr7ukz435rz5eyzjzldc5zpav95jptckpvx9fegdvekv8p8rq6q5r88v5 fancysandwiches @nprofile…2kgy I thought I was losing my fucking mind with how much we've been spending on groceries so I went and asked a bunch of my friends and we're all spending basically the same amount of money per person. I have a pile of acryla gouache that I want to use, but my attempts at making a DIY wet palette have made the experience of using acrylics miserable, especially compared to water color and gouache. Maybe it's just my lack of experience, but I really dislike what I've done in the past (basically wax paper sitting on top of a bed of wet paper towels). I've looked at commercial solutions, but they all seem to be some proprietary system of "buy our initial kit, and then continue to buy refills until you die or we discontinue the product" and I kind of hate that. So, my question is: What do you use for a wet palette? What do you like about your solution? What do you not like about your solution? I quite like Discourse. It is fully featured, and IMO user friendly. I did look into hosting it somewhat recently and was pleased to find out they offer an official docker image for running it, and it automatically installs updates in the background. It seems like it's pretty easy to self host. Discourse also offers a lot of tools for moderators out of the box. I will say, those tools all seem good to me, however I did personally see a lot of people upset with those tools when there was a lot of angry people flooding the Python forums due to the proposed bylaws changes that would allow the PSF to remove fellows. Basically, users can report posts, and if enough users do this a post will be automatically hidden and moderators will have to step in to review the post and choose to reinstate it, or keep it hidden. IMO this is a good feature, because if a moderator can't be there at least something problematic can be taken down. This feature does take into account who is reporting the post, it's more likely to hide a post if users with high reputation report the post. This feature was determined to be very controversial by a certain group of people (conservatives) who were afraid that a different group of people (they didn't say "woke", but they wanted to say "woke") could abuse this feature to hide all posts in a coordinated fashion. npub1atr7ukz435rz5eyzjzldc5zpav95jptckpvx9fegdvekv8p8rq6q5r88v5 fancysandwiches @nprofile…cycr and the "show everyone thumbnails of my other photos" crowd npub1atr7ukz435rz5eyzjzldc5zpav95jptckpvx9fegdvekv8p8rq6q5r88v5 fancysandwiches @nprofile…cycr I really doubt it npub1atr7ukz435rz5eyzjzldc5zpav95jptckpvx9fegdvekv8p8rq6q5r88v5 fancysandwiches I have encountered this phenomenon again today. I've already successfully advocated for this in a few specific scenarios in the past year, but maybe there's a way we can start to think about this on a regular schedule. npub1atr7ukz435rz5eyzjzldc5zpav95jptckpvx9fegdvekv8p8rq6q5r88v5 fancysandwiches @nprofile…j3kp @nprofile…03vg @nprofile…gffv We do code reviews 🙃, this was not an issue caught by code reviews 🥲. I would say very few people at my company take code reviews seriously. I am unsure of the path forward if someone would look at the code described above and approve it. Literally everyone involved should have known better, and yet no one seemed to care enough at review time to prevent that from happening. So, yes, code reviews are for sure a solution to the problem, but they are also a problem at my company, and I don't know what to do to improve them. I've tried begging people to do a better job, that did not work. npub1atr7ukz435rz5eyzjzldc5zpav95jptckpvx9fegdvekv8p8rq6q5r88v5 fancysandwiches @nprofile…03vg @nprofile…gffv Sure, but where I'm struggling is this is the kind of problem that falls under "I know it when I see it", and I'm struggling to find ways to make this easy to detect. We already use linters and formatters, they're good, but not good enough. We already have piles of unit and integration tests, and we do a lot of manual testing, but those don't prevent people from writing overly complex and brittle code. For example: someone needed a feature, to get that feature implemented they added a new server side API, which then also required a new flag to be passed to a bunch of other server side APIs so they would know to call this other new API that would give them the correct data. This meant new APIs would need to implement this flag, and we'd need to ensure that flag gets passed around. This new server side API, and associated API flag were entirely unnecessary. We had pre-existing ways to do exactly what was needed to be done, they are less error prone, and do not require adding a new flag to existing APIs, and passing that flag around. I don't know of a static analysis tool that would have prevented this problem. Certainly not linters. Certainly not code formatters. npub1atr7ukz435rz5eyzjzldc5zpav95jptckpvx9fegdvekv8p8rq6q5r88v5 fancysandwiches @nprofile…n7ma we already do reviews for every change, but folks aren't taking them seriously enough, so they're not particularly effective. I do like your idea of explicitly allocating time to address areas that need improvement. npub1atr7ukz435rz5eyzjzldc5zpav95jptckpvx9fegdvekv8p8rq6q5r88v5 fancysandwiches @nprofile…yjrv it's truly horrible npub1atr7ukz435rz5eyzjzldc5zpav95jptckpvx9fegdvekv8p8rq6q5r88v5 fancysandwiches @nprofile…857m @nprofile…0xfz this is actually something I do all the time, because I enjoy it, and find it really rewarding. If the problem I'm working on is hard enough I actually will do it multiple times for one PR. I think I am one of two people at my job who do this though. npub1atr7ukz435rz5eyzjzldc5zpav95jptckpvx9fegdvekv8p8rq6q5r88v5 fancysandwiches @nprofile…sele we already prevent merging if you fail our unit tests, which is good. But I do think there is room to add some kind of static analysis, but I haven't done the research. We have a linter, but it doesn't prevent you from merging. Linting stuff is the least of my concerns, folks can (and do) write code that the linter doesn't complain about, but is bad for reasons a linter can't yell at you for, and that's the crux of my issue. It's the more complex stuff that is causing problems. npub1atr7ukz435rz5eyzjzldc5zpav95jptckpvx9fegdvekv8p8rq6q5r88v5 fancysandwiches @nprofile…qgpp @nprofile…0xfz reviews are required, folks are barely using them as an opportunity to improve quality. Basically, there are two groups of people at my job: One group does really thorough reviews, and they ask for reviews from each other. The other group does not, and they ask for reviews from within that group. I can only guess why, but it's probably because one group will give you a 👍 , minus any major issues, and the other will leave you with a pile of suggestions. npub1atr7ukz435rz5eyzjzldc5zpav95jptckpvx9fegdvekv8p8rq6q5r88v5 fancysandwiches @nprofile…gqry @nprofile…ktkr this seems pretty reasonable to pull off. npub1atr7ukz435rz5eyzjzldc5zpav95jptckpvx9fegdvekv8p8rq6q5r88v5 fancysandwiches @nprofile…rvvx I think fundamentally you are correct, but the problem is *how* do I get everyone to slow down? npub1atr7ukz435rz5eyzjzldc5zpav95jptckpvx9fegdvekv8p8rq6q5r88v5 fancysandwiches @nprofile…uuzs yeah, I would love to measure this problem, but I'm basically clueless. It's easy for me to look at someone's PRs and go "hey, this is wildly complex, and it doesn't need to be", I don't know how to automate that, and I can't review every PR. Linters aren't good enough, AI code review tools aren't doing the job (we've tried), and I don't know of a static analysis tool that can do it (though maybe one exists). Checklists are definitely on the table, and going to be my first suggestion. npub1atr7ukz435rz5eyzjzldc5zpav95jptckpvx9fegdvekv8p8rq6q5r88v5 fancysandwiches @nprofile…6nq0 What does "starting with USPs" mean?
