You don't even have to cause property damage to majorly mess them up. All you gotta do is drop a traffic cone on the hood or leave one of their doors sitting open. Stops the stupid thing in its tracks and they gotta pay a gig economy worker to go close the door or remove the cone.
You can disrupt their service *and* nickle and dime fine them.

A small suggestion: We should not be using *their* propaganda term. We're not "side-loading" anything, we're installing programs on our own hardware. Calling it side loading plays into their narrative that we're doing something we shouldn't with our devices. It makes our battle harder, because the average non-techy user will hear side-loading and think it's something subversive and ignore us as we try to convince them this is a bad thing for Google to block.

While this is 100% the goal we should be pushing for, we do need to make sure we're preparing for this. The collapse will have collateral damage, and it is our responsibility to ensure that we're protecting those who are not responsible for the corruption from the fall out.
This means support the people who will lose their jobs when the companies that protect these monsters are destroyed. Provide mutual aid now because the social safety-net is full of holes and will only get worse while burning these assholes to the ground.
They've made themselves "too big to fail" for a reason. They want to scare us away from taking them down, and some would say we gotta tear them down anyway. This may be true, but we have to show we're better than them and take care of our own while we do it.

Has it really been ten years since we lost David Bowie? Fuck, where does time go.
Listening to Blackstar today then. I remember when the album dropped, and it was so different from the rest of his catalog. That wasn't unusual for him, his style ranged so much across his career after all. But then he died two days later, and it made it crystal clear it was his goodbye to all of us. It's a bittersweet listen as a result.

I just spent like an hour and a half watching a video that broke down how one asshole effectively fucked up biking infrastructure in the US and set us back at least three fucking decades.
I'm not sure why I watched the whole thing, but I hate this dude now, and he's not even still alive for me to be able to tell him to his face what a dipshit he is. So that's fun.

This is part of the reason why I *love* the BallotTrax system. Sign up and they email you when they mail your ballot, when they collect your ballot, and when you're counted.
Obviously we shouldn't *need* something like this to prevent people stealing our vote, but it reminds me when to watch for my ballot in the mail, and reassures me that my vote *has* been counted.

I don't think I've ever touched one of their keyboards. I currently have a Ducky mechanical keyboard after wearing down the keycaps on my current laptop (I'm *hard* on keyboards and the laptop is eight years old).

Okay, who makes good #WirelessMice that work with #Linux out of the box these days? I currently have an older Logitech, and it's been good. I see there's a newer version of the same mouse I have, but I also heard that Logitech was shoving AI bullshit into their mice these days, so I'm open to hearing what other options people like. It has to be available somewhere other than Amazon, because I do not shop there at all.

Honestly, it's the person behind the tools that matter. I've seen some really amazing and creative photography, and I've seen people do really flat boring paintings and drawings.
People who don't appreciate the voice in art will hold up the "photo realistic" paintings and drawings as "better" and "more talented", and then not realize how subjective what the lens captures with the camera. There are so many settings and tools that can be used to manipulate the photos all along the process.
However I will straight up say fuck AI. That is soulless and built by strip mining other peoples' creativity and still manages to strip the soul out of it when it regurgitates it.

I saw a screen shot of a social media post, where someone posted side by side a realistic painting and a van Gogh painting of the same street side cafe, as if that was a gotcha on how "over hyped" van Gogh is. And I'm like, naw, the van Gogh is more expressive. It tells us a story. There's humanity in it.
Seeing your painting brings the same feelings of expression, story, and humanity. So thank you for sharing it.

The fact that there isn't a "no AI use" option is first and foremost telling about who this is for. It's an after the fact permission of the abuse that these companies have already subjected us all to.
They've been abusing both shared resources (the environment), and the resources of others (our intellectual property, and the web servers we host our stuff on), and by extension have violated the social contract.
And even if there was a no AI option with these new rules for Creative Commons, the past behavior of these companies has made it crystal clear that they won't bother respecting it. They pull back when big enough companies push back, but the rest of us can't afford to go after them in court, so they just run right over us like we don't matter.
All this is, is giving them permission after they've already abused the common good will. Doing that will only further build up their sense of entitlement.
Who did you all consult? Just the AI companies, right? No one who actually has looked at the harm these companies are doing, clearly.

The thing that makes me so mad about this whole mess is that they're focused on using it to replace things that people are actually better at, instead of the things that we aren't. Using it with ethically sourced materials to assist accessibility would be a fantastic use of this technology, it just needs a little help getting to the point it's helpful there. But that doesn't make a profit like giving people with all the money the ability to bypass everyone else's labor by *stealing* from them.

TED Talks used to occasionally pop up something interesting, but I feel like they've enshittified just like everything else in the "disruptive" tech space. They're catering to the crowd that wants to push all the predatory soul sucking garbage that they think will improve their profit margins.
Someone else I follow here on Fedi pointed out something about AI that was kinda a "thank you for putting this into words" moment for me: the fact that they have to work so hard to sell this shit is an indicator that it *will* go away again. That if it really was as innovative as they all claim it to be, we wouldn't be subjected to this ongoing fucking propaganda campaign with it getting shoved into everything without a way to turn it off. People would just fucking adopt it if it was actually good. The only people I see still touching this shit are either tech management or techbros who spend their days wanting to be the former.
All I can hope is that I'll survive to see its downfall. I saw an article recently about one company starting to hire people to replace the chat bots again, and hopefully that's indicative of the bubble bursting and the AI slop will go away again soon.

All that is fine advice for someone who's neurotypical and a cis gendered man. But being a neurospicy woman means I have to be twice as good as the next best candidate. And job interviews are largely designed with a bunch of unsaid rules that a lot of us neurospicy folk do not understand how to navigate. I've literally done interviews where I talked myself out of getting a job I was qualified for because I didn't understand the unspoken rules. I was perceptive enough that I could tell I was doing things wrong, but because of the nonsense of doublespeak neurotypicals maintain in society, my tendency to just be honest usually bites me in the ass.
I trust you commented in good faith and good intentions here. I am aware of how often the "requirements" in job listings aren't actually requirements but strong suggestions, and how filling more of them than the other people who apply and get through the gauntlet of the interview is how one wins the job, but translating that to practical knowledge has always been beyond me. Also, there's very often (and even more so these days) the unspoken "be a white neurotypical cishet male" tacked onto the requirements, and the more of those you diverge from, the more you need to fulfill otherwise in order to be in the running against those who do meet that set of requirements.

I really need to figure out how to find a job that I can actually keep up with. I want to work remote, I am best able to keep up with outside of work obligations if I work no more than 30–32 hour a week, but I have absolutely zero fucking clue what I'm actually qualified to do remotely based on what skills I can prove I have — basically my work experience is retail, about a decade in a print shop and a year manufacturing mouth guards using 3d printers and some manual finishing crap.
Skills that I can't as easily prove, and I'm unsure if they meet standards that would suffice in a professional environment: writing, html/css web dev, linux desktop, digital photography and other art stuff.
I'm at a point where I'm only managing to take care of myself because I got stupid lucky, and if I don't get income coming in again, I will run through that windfall and be forced into a work environment that is not sustainable for me.

Okay, question for those of you who've already started cutting Google out of your lives: What's the best alternative to Google Maps if you want to store your own locations on top of a real world map? Like, places I've been or want to go, keeping track of where people in a group are located, or even just locations in fictional settings that are set in the real world?
**Edit for clarity**: I'm looking for something comparable to Google's "My Places" feature, a personal map that I can either keep private or share with others that isn't part of a public collective.
[uMap](https://umap-project.org/) might be what I need, but I need to figure out if 1. I can install it without a fucking docker container, and 2. if my current hosting has enough resources for it. Will investigate, but still open to further suggestions.

It gets better though.
So, after I'd upgraded the first time after that cursed phone, I was hanging out with a friend. She was showing me the wallet she had attached to her phone case, and I was like "check out my drop resistant case". As I'm pulling it out of my purse, she's asking me why I need a drop resistant case... only to have her question answered as I proceed to drop the phone as I pull it from my purse. It hit the pavement squarely on the corner. The case did its job, the phone was fine, but if I didn't have the case, I would have gotten a magnificent spiderweb crack out of that for sure.

True story, like three phones ago, I dropped my phone and cracked the screen. I panicked, found a local repair place, got it fixed (with a large helping of stress). The fix had a problem with the seal/glue fogging up, but before I could get it back to have them fix it, I dropped it again. I rode out the rest of that phone's time with the cracked glass and fogged seal, but every phone since? I will not start using it without a drop resistant case.

Uh oh, we have a critical emergency in the household.
Miss Carmen's mousie treat toy is missing.
Usually she leaves it out in the middle of the floor when she's done with it, and when I notice it I'll put it at the base of her scratching post. We're about twenty minutes to mousie time, and I can not find it. I've checked under shelves, inside her boxes, and I am not having any luck finding it.
We have another treat toy, but she never really liked that one as much. We'll have to try filling it today and hopefully the mousie will reappear from wherever she hid it, or I can find a suitable similar replacement.

I apologize if these thoughts turn out unhelpful, but as I viscerally understand the feeling of betrayal you're expressing here, I want to share this:
The thing that draws us to people like this is they share our pain in existing in the world. They put in their creative works things we can't express ourselves, so we can hand someone their art and see who else it resonates with, and learn who will understand our own pain with us. To be able to sit with us and share comfort in understanding.
Unfortunately, how people react to pain is very personal, especially when they don't have help processing it. (And this sounds like the case with Gaiman — he appears to have refused help, perhaps a direct result of the conditioning his childhood subjected him to.) Some people curl up in a ball and hide from the world, hide from the pain and seek shelter in works of art like writing, paintings, movies, etc. Others direct that pain at others. And unfortunately the likelihood of the latter happening increases the more powerful someone becomes, because our broken society *enables* people to behave that way, especially those with power and privilege.
So, what draws you to the work of people like this is the shared history of pain. That alone doesn't make you a monster, and what you choose to do with your pain is what determines who you are. The fact that you're questioning yourself for having liked the art of people like that is a good indicator that you are better than that, and I hope you take the time to dig deeper within yourself, even seek help if that's accessible to you, to help you better understand what is making you worry and address it.
