I’ll have to take your word for that, all the legal fine points go over my head.
I’m not even comfortable with the phrase ‘unauthorised protest’. We all have an absolute right to protest, always, period. We don’t need ‘authorisation’ from a judge, cops, or a note from mum.
What I found refreshing about this hearing and the judge’s comments was, throughout, a reality-based acceptance that a heckuva lot of people are g o I n g to march over the bridge this weekend (or as a compromise offer from PAG in a few weeks’ time) in protest, that no ruling could prevent that — all that was up for debate was whether those people will enjoy a qualified immunity from penalty for certain other offences that we don’t have an absolute right to engage in, like blocking a major transport lane.
Anyone who’s a giant dickhead on the march and does something rash (which of course the cops will try to provoke) will still get in a world of trouble, but the marchers in general should now be able to proceed non-violently to exercise their absolute and unchallenged right to protest.

I’m inferring from the media reports of the judge’s ruling that a decisive factor for denying the cops’ request seems to be, ironically, the PAG’s consistent track record for 20+ months of constructive engagement with the NSW Police in how dozens upon dozens of the previous protests have been organised and marshaled by the group’s own members.
Certainly been to enough myself to see with my own eyes they can organise and run a strong rally and non-violent march under hostile conditions.
Which is a real lesson in praxis, for those few loud voices who’d no doubt have been advocating all sorts of other, err, approaches, up to this point.

I’m still like deer-in-the-headlights frozen since a colleague earlier this week just casually threw into a discussion about a complex, consequential, and costly legal question “well I checked on ChatGPT and it said…” as though that was some kind of mic drop.
I just wasn’t prepared for this. My jaw was on the floor.
Spoiler alert: ChatGPT was 100% wrong, like exactly the inverse of the true fact, of the complex, consequential, and costly legal question. A yes/no question where the answer was ‘no’ and ChatGPT said ‘yes’.
I bet they’ll keep using it though 🤷🏼‍♂️

Among other things, this week marks the end of what remained of US hegemony.
Its remaining military, security, and intelligence allies have learned that no way no how can they rely on US-backed hard power, for any reason, in any theatre, and that their own intelligence links are compromised by Pentagon and DoD malfeasance. (They should have learned that lesson decades ago, they have been willfully blind to this, but there’s no ignoring or pretending any longer.)
The US is no longer a hegemon, and this opens up a new world of possibilities both hopeful and terrifying.
