I just heard about #MatrixConf a few days ago. The talks/schedule sound super interesting and the ticket price is quite affordable. And now I'm pondering if I should maybe go there, it's actually not that far away from my city, just one ferry trip away :D.
Is anyone by any chance going there and taking the ferry from Lübeck-Travemünde/Germany?
(Also, any recommendations for last-minute hostels / affordable stays in Malmö?)

maybe, if you put #Freifunk in between ;-)? A Gluon based node should be able to #mesh over a #VPN and then #reticulum should be able to mesh over the #multicast capable @npub149r…40cj. I think Freifunk Innsbruck and @npub1uzu…6dxt might have experimented with this setup.

also I still don't get the #libslirp part in the article. Like its author I hadn't heard of this library before. Is that somehow shortcutting a full virtualization?
The article author says "libslirp is a library that enables VMs to have networking, which you almost always want". I don't think you need this library to use networking with VMs?

Why is there an @npub1mtr…trt0 and an @npub1mjt…3zpc account? It seems a bit confusing to find the official one. Especially as both have the same logo and both have a lot of followers. The former seems to be the official one, though, according to website verification.

@npub1tgg…qwzh I read on a recent article from @npub14kg…4yra that you're planing on a #P2P document editing solution. That sounds very interesting and of interest for #Freifunk communities. Do you have any recommended links to follow for that?

@npub1fj6…aq90 was so kind to start hosting a #NetHack 5.0.0 server on dn42. But I'm afraid to learn all these controls again :D.
Now I'm wondering, has @npub1mg6…vef8 ever considered creating a server version playable via a browser, for instance? Would be awesome if there were a #ShatteredPixel dungeon instance with a highscore only available on dn42 :D. It has the same spirit as nethack. But way more comfortable/modern controls.

(and not to reduce the pressure on Github etc. But I understood that remark in the closing event as the default "FOSDEM" WLAN would be IPv6 only - but not that there wouldn't be an extra "FOSDEM-Dualstack" WiFi again? But maybe I misunderstood.)

2026-02-01 23:50:20 GMT

I actually misunderstood the two WiFis, I think: I had selected the "FOSDEM-Dualstack" WiFi as I thought "of course I want IPv6!". Only through the closing event presentation I realized that the "FOSDEM" WiFi (without the "-Dualstack") actually has IPv6 as well - just that it was IPv6-mostly?

I'm curious what people and orgs like @npub1qmc…prcp, @npub1fdr…lvhs, @npub15qj…3kl0, [@fiff_de](https://mastodon.bits-und-baeume.org/@fiff_de ) or @npub1m24…d9a3 for instance would think about the dual strategy of the @npub1prv…5px6 to somehow exert control over software by adding extra "control layers" around it and through "close and trusting coordination with the manufacturer". This plan seems to have quite some holes to me?

So, #OpenAI thinks they are developing the next big thing that will replace everything else?
You know what they still can't even implement and replace? #IPv4 with #IPv6, their website is still IPv4 only, lol.

ha, what I was thinking, too :D. Was also like, hm, wasn't there a viral video some years ago about a ticking noise? And I can confidently say, I found the (/a) source of the (/a) ticking noise:

#Solar

I think your IPv6 usage is infinitely percent/times higher than that of Github, not 42% higher? Or 42.0095476% *points* higher than that of Github.
(Or is that a language issue and not a Math issue? At least in Germany there is a distinction between percent and percent points.)

we had a 1476 bytes MTU on the PPPoE interface. I would have expected a 1396 bytes MTU on the #WireGuard tunnel interface, but ping's with various sizes showed it had to be 1392 instead. Does that make sense, would the padding explain that?

2025-04-26 23:29:38 GMT

- reply

oh, wait, that could finally explain why I had to set a different #MTU than what I had calculated/expected for #WireGuard tunnel for #dn42 behind a PPPoE host...

Visiting the @npub156e…e36v lately, after all these years, was a lot of fun. Loved the friendly, open culture and the mix of languages. There was one language moment I found particularly interesting: There was one conversation in French somewhere in the room, which I couldn't really listen in (my FR skill is still WiP) - but I heard #Merdification and my brain triggered: "Oh, they are talking about @npub1fdr…lvhs 's #Enshittification.". And yes, the FR #Wikipedia article has that translation, too :-)

Gab es jetzt eigentlich schon Lösungen bzgl. #Deutschlandticket ohne Android / iPhone app?

oh, had been eyeing the #pinephone, too, how satisfied are you with it, would you get it again? As an old #N900 user I find the keyboard accessory nice and found the LoRa addon very interesting. And the variety of free, mobile #Linux distros / ecosystem that supposedly runs with it.
The other device I've otherwise been eyeing is the #Fairphone, also because of its long software warranty and advertised #LineageOS support.

I'm kind of wishing that maybe @npub1v2r…kmxu might have its return one day. One (multi-protocol) messenger, where maybe I can choose which protocol(s) to use for/when adding a specific, new contact. The Pidgin client should then negotiate which protocol both sides accept when I try to have a conversation, similar to a TLS negotiation.
Right now I've had my issues a few times with finding some message again, because I wasn't sure if I got that on #Signal, #Matrix or #Mastodon.

Did I miss something? Or is the author confusing #Bluesky with #Mastodon?

oh, that's neat, I wasn't aware of that! So it didn't use the 11s implementation in mac80211 in the Linux kernel? Oh wait, back then there wasn't even mac80211 yet, I guess.
Did the Marvel chip use some extra firmware for that? Or was it burned into the chip, with no option to update the algorithm?
That now makes me wonder, if the firmware for Qualcomm and Mediatek Wifi chips were OpenSource / reverse engineered if they could be used similarly.

some years ago mesh networking in phones was a no-go, because it would drain their battery too quickly. Lately I was very surprised to see a Gl.inet XE300 travel router last for 8 hours on its integrated 5000mAh battery with a #Freifunk firmware with #11s + #batman_adv (and no user traffic). So maybe portable 24/7 mesh networking devices in your pocket or bag is on the table again these days.
I'm wondering what #OLPC's experience with 11s and battery life was.

One thing I initially found confusing with @npub1tcc…4342 / @npub1m9z…whzq: How one would share and join a channel. The way you get bounced between instances for that. And in a way for @npub163h…mv0n, too.
People describe these services as "just like email". But I think the one thing that is missing for that would be a proper #URI scheme and integration in browsers for things you can join or follow in these federated networks. Email has its established "mailto:[email protected]" for instance.
