Americans may not realize this but that's always been illegal, y'all have always been paranoid everyone else is out to take your jobs and you have always had extra difficult work visa requirements and have always been harsh about applying them to everyone. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura super idée et initiative! npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura Looks like bird flu is turning up in SF wastewater in increasing concentrations, meaning it's likely human to human transmission (if this is accurate). https://bsky.app/profile/falconryfinance.bsky.social/post/3le6ol2gink2h npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura https://www.kenklippenstein.com/p/luigi-mangione-judge-married-to-former npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura Before there was a bag of dicks to be eaten there was a cup of dicks to be drunk. @npub1whs…vn0x npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura Not sure about this read on it. It was weird timing on Trudeau's part to remove her from her position just as the budget came out. Clearly there was a lot of internal conflict. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura · 1d Now, BlueSky was premised on whiteness as a consequence of its initial invite-only status. The folks who had access to the means of bringing people onto the platform were predominantly white users (whatever their other axis of marginalization) which shaped the initial habits of the platform. Dr. Johnathan Flowers, Blade Wielding Bisexual (Lordean arc) @shengokai.bsky.social · 1d (To be clear, other axis of marginalization matter in the habits of early BlueSky formed, especially given the queerness of the initial population. However, it is a historical fact that BlueSky was massively white, and you'd be a fool to think that didn't shape the initial culture.) Dr. Johnathan Flowers, Blade Wielding Bisexual (Lordean arc) @shengokai.bsky.social · 1d Indeed, it took an intentional effort on behalf of Black users to bring more black users onto the site so that the initial environment was MORE diverse than what was allowed by the invite-only structure. That is, Black users sought to intentionally disrupt the ongoing patterns of recruitment. Dr. Johnathan Flowers, Blade Wielding Bisexual (Lordean arc) @shengokai.bsky.social · 1d Here, I'm not saying that this was an intentional decision to keep BlueSky white, it wasn't. It was a consequence of the ways that access to the spaces of technology, open source or otherwise, is still massively stratified along lines of race. White people have the privilege of early access. Dr. Johnathan Flowers, Blade Wielding Bisexual (Lordean arc) @shengokai.bsky.social · 1d To get back to the main point: user-driven moderation will not work at scale without a centralized backstop because whiteness and the colonial project run WAY ahead of a digital space. The habits of whiteness will shape moderation decisions and exercise an outsized force on how the tools are used. Dr. Johnathan Flowers, Blade Wielding Bisexual (Lordean arc) @shengokai.bsky.social · 1d Mastodon is a good example of this, and I've said as much in print: The Whiteness of Mastodon | TechPolicy.Press A conversation with Dr. Johnathan Flowers about Elon Musk's changes at Twitter and the dynamics on Mastodon, the decentralized alternative. www.techpolicy.press npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura Post Dr. Johnathan Flowers, Blade Wielding Bisexual (Lordean arc) @shengokai.bsky.social You want an argument? Fine, I'll give you one. First, we need to start with Charles Mills' observation that political philosophy and political theory has ignored the fact that white supremacy has functioned as an organizing political force for the past 500 years. · Holmes Wilson post Dr Flowers is responding to: "Being able to choose your moderator is as basic a right as being able to elect your leaders. Some people say neither democracy nor user-driven moderation will function at scale and make superficially appealing arguments. That's fine. The work of society is to prove them wrong, or we are doomed. December 13, 2024 at 2:59 PM" Dr. Johnathan Flowers, Blade Wielding Bisexual (Lordean) I mention this because the conversation you've initiated is a political conversation, especially when you're making an analogy between user-driven moderation and democracy and framing choosing a moderator in a liberal rights-based structure, the same structure Mills argues is shaped by whiteness. Dr. Johnathan Flowers, Blade Wielding Bisexual (Lordean arc) @shengokai.bsky.social · 1d Now for Dewey, all social structures are political structures. Everything from your church to your baseball team to your academic department is a political structure as Dewey take "politics" as the domain of how we create environments which enable collaborative effort towards a specific end. Dr. Johnathan Flowers, Blade Wielding Bisexual (Lordean arc) @shengokai.bsky.social · 1d If we bring in Ahmed, who argues that whiteness is institutional, it is inherited as we inherit the material conditions, the histories of colonialism that organize our social and cultural spaces, then it becomes clear that we need to take seriously whiteness as a structuring force in society. Dr. Johnathan Flowers, Blade Wielding Bisexual (Lordean arc) @shengokai.bsky.social · 1d I want to pause here and make absolutely clear that whiteness becomes a structuring force as a consequence of the colonial project (Mills, Ahmed) which sought to reorder the world in the image of whiteness. Part of this reordering was imposing a gender, sexual, and ability binary upon the world. Dr. Johnathan Flowers, Blade Wielding Bisexual (Lordean arc) @shengokai.bsky.social · 1d So the colonial project not only extended whiteness, but it also demanded cisnormativity, heteronormativity, neuronormativity, and imposed the racial binary upon the world. This is important to keep in mind when I'm talking about the organization of the world as a political project of whiteness. Dr. Johnathan Flowers, Blade Wielding Bisexual (Lordean arc) @shengokai.bsky.social · 1d I say all of this so that I can make this point: your liberal democratic framework ignores the ways in which white supremacy organizes the spaces we operate in, the ways that it ALWAYS runs ahead of our presence in these spaces, because whiteness is part of the material conditions we inherit. Dr. Johnathan Flowers, Blade Wielding Bisexual (Lordean arc) @shengokai.bsky.social · 1d It shapes the environments in which user-driven moderation happens such that the norms that motivate user-driven moderation AT SCALE are the norms of whiteness. They take whiteness and white digital embodiment as the default starting point from which the digital world unfolds. This is crucial. Dr. Johnathan Flowers, Blade Wielding Bisexual (Lordean arc) @shengokai.bsky.social · 1d I say "at scale" in the above because of how the presence of non-white users and non-white digital embodiments can disrupt the organization of digital space on the small scale. Andre Brock's work "Distributed Blackness" articulates this in the formation of Black Twitter. Dr. Johnathan Flowers, Blade Wielding Bisexual (Lordean arc) @shengokai.bsky.social · 1d Catherine Knight Steele's work "Digital Black Feminism" also points to how moderation structures and social media itself were not designed for Black users, much less Black Women, and how these intentional design choices that take whiteness as the default serve to maintain marginalization. Continue thread... Dr. Johnathan Flowers, Blade Wielding Bisexual (Lordean arc) @shengokai.bsky.social Put simply, whiteness as the material conditions which digital environments inherit serve to structure moderation, including composable moderation, at scale through how the digital environment is continuous with the broader cultural environment in which it is anchored and BlueSky is no exception. I take vitamin D and use a very bright light in the morning, it helps support your carcadian rhythm. You can get light therapy lamps/lights for pretty cheap these days. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura Things are not going well with moderation over on BS right now. It seems the same issues that occurred here are occurring there (predictably). But, because it's all centralized and one big server, and is working from a Libertarian ethos, there are no instance admins and moderators having discussions like occurred here and users are left just appealing to the BS authorities to do something. Things definitely aren't perfect here, because they're not going to perfect anywhere, but it's interesting to see the differences and similarities in how things play out between the two systems and the human social issues that happen everywhere because they are part of larger social issues. Props to Blacksky for doing well so far but that may be because the main target for abuse over there right now is transpeople and it's still in the later wave of early adoption and beginning of mass adoption. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura Remembering the mass murder of 14 women in an act of femicide in Montreal on Dec 6th. Particularly as anti-feminist, women-hating, anti-bodily autonomy and anti-abortion legislation by right wing political parties in North America around the world increases. Pushing women out of schools and jobs, murdering us for existing as humans with agency not objects of male desire and abuse, forcing us into pregnancy and servitude, all these oppressive things are back everywhere in the world, despite how hard we, our mothers and women throughout history have fought. The femmicide needs to end. And that includes the murder of transwomen and femmes of all kind. Femmephobia leads to femmicide. https://www.cbc.ca/montreal/features/remember-14/ npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura It's shocking how abusive hospital systems are to all healthcare workers and how little mental health support there tends to be. Maybe less of the very bro Canada Proud and overtly White supremacist type of stuff but definitely the "we're just sensible conservatives" that a lot of people who think they're smart fall for and that of our very corporate owned mainstream and business media promotes. This thought brought to you by watching someone who works for the CBC (in Alberta) trying to whitewash Stephen Harper and claim he protected healthcare, our more restrictive gun laws, Canadian and various things he definitely didn't do (though he did very much hide the fact that he is an evangelical, etc to get elected). npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura Spoiler: Mussolini did not actually make the trains run on time. https://www.thoughtco.com/did-mussolini-get-the-trains-running-on-time-1221609 npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura I read some things about it here. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura This is also very tied into rural vs urban/Montreal in Quebec, along with narratives about being colonized by the English while denying French colonialism and while also acting like a colony of France (in Legault's government's case). But then there are things like favoring immigration from Haiti because of french and stuff like the FLQ's relationship with the Black Panthers. Some of this is also generational and about very wealthy Quebecois businessmen exploiting the rest of us and destroying the remaining bits of the socialist state (PKP, etc). It's an attempt to return us to the Grande Noirceur. It should be noted, for outsiders, that this politician is also a member of Quebec Solidaire, who are a separatist party that is feminist, has been led by a working class lesbian (Manon is simply the best), immigrants, etc. There's a tension here in Quebec between those of us who have an inclusive, socialist, environmentalist vision of Quebec and those of us who have a narrow, exclusionary vision of Quebec. It doesn't help that radio poubelle around Quebec City promotes the far right. And none of this can be entirely separated from racism in France and laïcité (as different from the English world's idea of secularism). @npub15yh…gztj @npub19zy…rrny npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura A stark contrast to some of what's happening in Ontario, Canada where the Premier is pushing through legislation that allows drivers to kill others with impunity. If you're worried and struggling to survive now it's very hard to plan for the future or to know if you can even afford a future. This doesn't mean poor people don't dream of better futures, it just means they have less or no resources to plan or enact future plans. This becomes even more relevant if you're part of a demographic at risk of being murdered by police or other people. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura It's vanity greenwashing for people who don't want to get their hands dirty. I work either lounging or standing up because chairs are my personal nemisis (my back hates sitting on chairs for long periods). But when I work standing up I tend to be moving around more too. Just standing in one place all the time isn't great, as most blue collar workers with jobs like that will tell you (especially if it's standing on a hard floor). Basically our bodies like to move and evolved to be moving or lounging around. Just standing in one place or sitting in a chair for long periods is pretty unnatural behaviour. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura 💯 we need more "tend and befriend" response and less "fight, flight or freeze" over the long haul. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura Yes. "Yes, Soviet-style communism was a catastrophe for many people, but with a few notable exceptions, the West’s short-sighted, cold war triumphalism led to a deeply flawed transition to capitalist markets. The world is now paying the price for this political arrogance. The pain and subsequent gaslighting that Western leaders perpetrated on the people of the Eastern bloc does not justify Putin’s military invasion of Ukraine. Not does it justify Orbán’s illiberal policies in Hungary; nor would it justify the massive deportation of immigrants wanted by the AfD. However when you create wastelands known to produce monsters, you should not feign surprise when those monsters appear." https://mondediplo.com/2024/11/14germany-great-depression npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura This is how fascism works, it makes people mistrust reality and not know what's true. It's societal gaslighting and it's why Musk bought Twitter, to disrupt and control collective meaning making and to promote confusion and lies. It's why fascists target universities and groups that have their own ability to create meaning collectively (so queer people, other religious groups, Swifties lol, etc). It's why us culture theory nerds have been talking about and warning about epistemological collapse (the collapse of knowledge/meaning) and why fascists (and cult leaders) create and use disorienting people then indoctrinating them and doublespeak to create a meaning vacuum they can shove "certainty" into. Knowing your own heart and mind, and having strong and honest relationships and living our values, and being able to tolerate uncertainty, is how we protect ourselves from becoming fascists. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura You should get some kind of medal for that! npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura Here, would you like some Canadian made angst for dessert? 😆 Apologies about my part in it. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura Sorry about that! npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura So a lot of relatively privileged people are freaking out, White guys perhaps the most, but your lives might FEEL different but will continue relatively unchanged for quite a while, particularly if you put your head down and play along. So will everyone else's for a while. The veneer of normalcy is actually pretty crucial to fascism, particularly in the earliest stages before kleptocracies are solidly established. Fascism isn't really a new facet of American life, it's pretty much built into the US political system, things will continue to appear normal for the privileged for a while. Make sure you use that privilege well and for more than just self preservation (and just looking after your own family isn't what I mean here, I mean using it to help those really at risk). This means risking your privilege, spending some of it on other people, because that's always been true and it's always been what's needed. To be clear, I'm not trying to tell anyone how to feel. I get no pleasure out of others feeling scared, sad or anxious. We all need to just have our feelings. I'm just asking you don't abandon the rest of us. We might even be able to help you through this stage of adjusting to the larger reality and together, with all our different perspectives, skills and care we may be able to make this less awful. Or not. We just don't know. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura I see it more as just acknowledging reality so other people can too. Too confrontational just scares people into trying to aggressively preserve normalcy but saying "actually this is bad" and affirming shared social values gives people permission to be honest with themselves and others. @npub1ppe…qv2g npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura I don't have my own kids but I care very deeply for kids of all ages in my chosen family. Performing normality in terribly not okay situations helps fascism (same in domestic abuse situations with authoritarian abusers as it is on the national level when fascists are in power). Us weirdos often end up being Cassandras BECAUSE we have a hard time performing normality. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura I get the impression that Russia's going to launch a huge offensive on Ukraine using those NK troops on or just after election day knowing Trump will create chaos. I am sad for us all. *Hopefully I'm very wrong. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura No doubt that's a reference to glass ceilings but it's hard not to read it as much darker considering it's basically an election with Nazis. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura Did PR block him from building a resort or something? The Italian mafia is deeply involved in a lot of food theft and fraud (mislabeling of stuff and passing it off as being higher quality than it is). Here in Quebec there was a massive maple syrup heist from the warehouse where strategic reserves are stored. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura Really good aged cheddar is a very different thing than your basic mild cheddar! Despair can drive action far more than faith it's all going to work out. Plus we need to be preparing for the disaster that's coming for all of us rather than trying to bargain with reality, that's not how reality functions. There are always going to be people who choose themselves and denial, selfish people will continue to be selfish. Also, accepting how bad it is and is going to be are necessary to prepare...you can't deal with reality while in denial. People are clinging to "normalcy" and dreaming of "normal" futures for themselves and their children while people are already dying from climate change. This is my second apocalypse (my world ended the first time during the AIDS crisis). We got desperate and angry, we accepted the very cruel reality and fought back. Now Prep exists and fewer of us are dying. We fought while mourning, we used our anger as fuel. We looked after each other when nobody else would. That required accepting reality (which not everyone did and it was deadly for them). Part of fully living is accepting that death is inevitable, it's what we do with our precious time and lives that counts. This includes appreciating the beauty and joy as well as the horror and sadness. Most of us Westerners are very shielded from death and the more privileged we are the easier it is to pretend it doesn't apply to us (this drives some antivaxx stuff too). I went to bed early then woke up in the middle of the night and didn't get properly back to sleep so now I'm tired because second sleep eluded me and I have yet to really start my day. It probably didn't help that the cat was having a fit about neighbor cat being on the back balcony so I had to chase it off and spend some time soothing her. This not smoking cannabis thing isn't helping my sleep cycles and I've only gotten one good dream out of it so far. The very carefully coiffed big hair is always a red flag (unlike the shaggy unkempt hair and beards of many real scientists and intellectuals they're trying to signify they are). *OMG, this includes Pinker reviewing Gladwell, what an orobouros of pseudo-intellectualism and Serious Rational MenTM. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura Old White guys, who very likely have children and grandchildren, can't let go of racist and colonialist overpopulation canards as if this is the way to solve climate change and isn't just more racism and eugenics. It's always men, they're always White and they always evade issues around the racist origins of this "solution" and have clearly never addressed their own racism and systemic privilege. *If this isn't you, there's no need to get defensive. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura I mean, it's not just sacrificing the climate, it's sacrificing all of our lives and the whole damn planet to their grandiose delusions and greed. The big lie that the tech industry is innovative is fueling this, even as it consumes and destroys true human creativity. These kinds of men also always cheat on their partners too and often are very abusive and into coersive control of both their partners and children. *Other people are only objects to be exploited and disposed of when they inevitably lose value. There's a female version of this too. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura Lots of disgusting rich White people involved in all this too. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura True! And absolutely no doubt he had influence and used his power to shape hip hop, with lots of help from the rest of the industry, it just wasn't a good influence 🤷♀️ I also saw that Tupac's brother still thinks Diddy killed Tupac. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura I'm old so Diddy was the corporatization of hiphop and selling people glamorous delusions about criminality (as opposed to artists that were just reporting on life in the streets). But he apparently did his job of blinding people to hip hop that spoke about reality, that advocated for real change (not spare change for billionaires) and just real people's lives. Bling bling. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura People just out there complaining they can't rape and abuse women anymore and calling it the end of hip hop. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura Oh that's a common right wing conspiracy theory and it's vintage Alex Jones climate change denialism. They're coming for our guns, oil and beef, the very foundations of American maleness is under attack, etc. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura Yeah, Social Darwinism is pseudoscience and a product of colonialism and White supremacy. There is no one essential "human nature" (we are a diverse species, neurodiversity is part of that) but we are essentially a social species and cooperation is key to our survival. This doesn't mean we don't have conflict, how we manage conflict and competition is largely cultural. Our main problem is that Social Darwinism and White male (and just human) supremacy are still deeply embedded in our institutions and practice of science. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura The true opposite of depression is neither gaiety nor absence of pain, but vitality—the freedom to experience spontaneous feelings. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura yes, charging more on top of often bad service isn't the way to increase ridership. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura Ridiculous. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura It's hard to avoid AccuWeather! I can't find the info anywhere on any of the official sites, they just say they're not doing the older vaccine and will have the new one in the fall. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura I'm fine with my DNA being used for science (I'm currently in a study about detecting ovarian cancer that includes testing for genetic markers, for instance). I do not trust corporations (including pharmaceutical corporations) with any of this (in large part because I come from a medical family). npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura You just reminded me I have a coffee eclair in the fridge that I'd entirely forgotten about! I popped into a local bakery to pick up a baguette and remembered that last time I'd ordered and paid for two eclairs and got home to find only one in the box. I mentioned it, not really expecting anything, and they gave me a replacement one, which was very sweet of them. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura It was very yum! I make no claim to any form of authenticity but I've had Indian and Pakistani friends teach me a few things over the years. And it's so simple to make really and very delicious. Also, there's nothing quite like the smell of spices being opened up in the heat in a dry pan (always do this!). I used a packaged Madras curry mix I had on hand but used some whole cumin and black mustard seeds as well, and grated frozen tumeric and fresh ginger (both tumeric and ginger store well frozen and you just grate as you need). I also threw in some cashews for extra crunch. I'm already looking forward to eating it tomorrow when the flavors have developed more. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura I made a very tasty Madras curry with butternut squash, chickpeas, tiny potatoes, mixed greens (frozen spinach and fenugreek leaves, some fresh mustard greens) and coconut milk for dinner. It was delicious but not very photogenic. It will be even more delicious tomorrow. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura Exactly why I resisted the lure of cheap DNA tests (that I'd only want to do for medical curiosity reasons anyway). npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura Gotta love and laugh at "The Gammon Restaurant" serving "English cuisine" too! npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura Yeah, we're trying to make up for not doing any infrastructure work for decades. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura This is how structural inequalities get perpetuated and designed (unconsciously) into new systems, business as usual. Believing and even being "one of the good guys" doesn't prevent that, it actually kinds of guarantees it. Sure, nobody likes having to deal with resistance to their ambitions but you only get closer to equality and real systemic change when you let that resistance achieve actual momentum rather than getting mad it's preventing business as usual. Actual innovation and change IS often uncomfortable, especially for those who are comfortable. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura I'm not crying, you're crying. It's a rainy day. I have the day off and I've started watching The Battle for Black Music: Paid in Full and we're 14 minutes in and footage of Billy Holliday singing "Strange Fruit" that I haven't seen before and I am weeping yet again at how exquisitely she embodies pain and makes it into art. And the depth of tragedy and cruelty of racism and racists, and the ongoing suffering it creates in our world and the deep harm it does to our social body. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura This bit of research about brain damage, complex thinking and confabulation seems related... https://www.psypost.org/new-study-links-brain-network-damage-to-increased-religious-fundamentalism/ npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura Boys are often encouraged to engage in violent and dangerous sports. We know concussions lead to brain damage and domestic violence. Domestic violence is also a leading cause of brain damage in women (and children). It's kind of crazy how we tend to ignore this as a society because violence for entertainment and controlling people is so profitable. https://braininjurycanada.ca/en/issues-advocacy/intimate-partner-violence/ npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura Yeah, super interesting study and I like that it's something that popped up while studying something else more fun. The brain connectivity and complex thought component is very interesting. Also, it highlights how religious fundamentalist physical abuse of children and authoritarian cycles of abuse in general are ways fundamentalist and authoritarian family and social systems perpetuate themselves. Not to mention the role football and fundamentalist religion play in reinforcing each other via creating brain damage in young men. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura "A new study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences suggests that specific networks in the brain, when damaged, may influence the likelihood of developing religious fundamentalism. By analyzing patients with focal brain lesions, researchers found that damage to a particular network of brain regions—mainly in the right hemisphere—was associated with higher levels of fundamentalist beliefs. This finding provides new insight into the potential neural basis of religious fundamentalism, which has long been studied in psychology but less so in neuroscience." https://www.psypost.org/new-study-links-brain-network-damage-to-increased-religious-fundamentalism/
