Last Notes npub1c6dr99s0tdv8v94pz7p7f29wae0ck8sx0lj2zmc9r98l8uhlzfcsrv4fy5 Brian Vastag You know what I'd like to see journalists do? When the admin ignores their Qs and sends propaganda-laden statements, WRITE THAT. Say, "The CDC did not answer our questions but instead sent us an anonymous statement that contained falsehoods, so the Post is not printing it." npub1c6dr99s0tdv8v94pz7p7f29wae0ck8sx0lj2zmc9r98l8uhlzfcsrv4fy5 Brian Vastag I first wrote about early trials of stem cells for type 1 diabetes in....2007. npub1c6dr99s0tdv8v94pz7p7f29wae0ck8sx0lj2zmc9r98l8uhlzfcsrv4fy5 Brian Vastag Got a message from Amazon saying there's a service outage so I can't turn on my lightbulb. npub1c6dr99s0tdv8v94pz7p7f29wae0ck8sx0lj2zmc9r98l8uhlzfcsrv4fy5 Brian Vastag The only South American team in the North American soccer federation, Suriname, is holding its own against Mexico. npub1c6dr99s0tdv8v94pz7p7f29wae0ck8sx0lj2zmc9r98l8uhlzfcsrv4fy5 Brian Vastag I had the great honor of writing Sally Ride's obituary at WaPo but I would've done a better job if we had gotten the news before 3pm that day. Daily journalism is about doing what you can before the clock strikes doom. npub1c6dr99s0tdv8v94pz7p7f29wae0ck8sx0lj2zmc9r98l8uhlzfcsrv4fy5 Brian Vastag Canada 4-0 over Honduras in the Gold Cup. npub1c6dr99s0tdv8v94pz7p7f29wae0ck8sx0lj2zmc9r98l8uhlzfcsrv4fy5 Brian Vastag I mean the theme song alone might as well be hammering my skull with a mallet. npub1c6dr99s0tdv8v94pz7p7f29wae0ck8sx0lj2zmc9r98l8uhlzfcsrv4fy5 Brian Vastag I'm watching "Murderbot" and for a show about an android that's very obviously a neurodivergent person it's not an easy show for folks with sensory sensitivities at all. npub1c6dr99s0tdv8v94pz7p7f29wae0ck8sx0lj2zmc9r98l8uhlzfcsrv4fy5 Brian Vastag Poker Face season 2 isn't doing it for me. It looks great and features good acting but every plot is pretty much the same with different window dressing. She's a one trick amateur detective and the trick has already worn thin. npub1c6dr99s0tdv8v94pz7p7f29wae0ck8sx0lj2zmc9r98l8uhlzfcsrv4fy5 Brian Vastag I hate watched all of "Your Friends and Neighbors." They're all insufferable lol. npub1c6dr99s0tdv8v94pz7p7f29wae0ck8sx0lj2zmc9r98l8uhlzfcsrv4fy5 Brian Vastag Who else is watching the Champions League final? Hope he takes it well but he did ask for help. I tried to be sensitive that people who aren't professional writers probably aren't used to heavy editing. npub1c6dr99s0tdv8v94pz7p7f29wae0ck8sx0lj2zmc9r98l8uhlzfcsrv4fy5 Brian Vastag Seems bad. npub1c6dr99s0tdv8v94pz7p7f29wae0ck8sx0lj2zmc9r98l8uhlzfcsrv4fy5 Brian Vastag @nprofile…fynq I never read comics but is there a superhero who drops into the holler in North Kakalacky and cracks open some meth heads? npub1c6dr99s0tdv8v94pz7p7f29wae0ck8sx0lj2zmc9r98l8uhlzfcsrv4fy5 Brian Vastag Detail of a young anole lizard on a hibiscus leaf I took in my yard today. npub1c6dr99s0tdv8v94pz7p7f29wae0ck8sx0lj2zmc9r98l8uhlzfcsrv4fy5 Brian Vastag @nprofile…07t5 Yes I was joking. I actually bought a new water heater last week before tariffs kick in. Not as many features, sure, but lower price per GB and one less gross Google tentacle in my life. npub1c6dr99s0tdv8v94pz7p7f29wae0ck8sx0lj2zmc9r98l8uhlzfcsrv4fy5 Brian Vastag Welp, the dealership where I bought my car last year apparently screwed up the EV tax credit paperwork and the IRS is rejecting my tax return. So many dealerships fucked it up that the IRS has now made a new rule to try to fix it. npub1c6dr99s0tdv8v94pz7p7f29wae0ck8sx0lj2zmc9r98l8uhlzfcsrv4fy5 Brian Vastag Beth Mazur and her group #MEAction was heavily involved in standing up the Columbia U center for research into myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome, which also worked on #LongCovid. Some of the smartest people I know have lost their careers & ability to read for more than a few minutes to COVID cognitive dysfunction. npub1c6dr99s0tdv8v94pz7p7f29wae0ck8sx0lj2zmc9r98l8uhlzfcsrv4fy5 Brian Vastag The regime has killed most or all #LongCovid research, including 45 studies that were almost completed and 29 NIAID grants. npub1c6dr99s0tdv8v94pz7p7f29wae0ck8sx0lj2zmc9r98l8uhlzfcsrv4fy5 Brian Vastag On a day when a volcano resumed erupting, we get news that the Hawaii Volcano Observatory - relied on by residents of Hawaii Island to stay safe from lava and vog - will have its HQ closed by Elon fucking Musk. npub1c6dr99s0tdv8v94pz7p7f29wae0ck8sx0lj2zmc9r98l8uhlzfcsrv4fy5 Brian Vastag #Trump admin closes one of the few ME/CFS research centers, shuttering studies in progress. npub1c6dr99s0tdv8v94pz7p7f29wae0ck8sx0lj2zmc9r98l8uhlzfcsrv4fy5 Brian Vastag My (not very large) investments are now 100% out of US stocks npub1c6dr99s0tdv8v94pz7p7f29wae0ck8sx0lj2zmc9r98l8uhlzfcsrv4fy5 Brian Vastag @nprofile…g9jh @nprofile…kw96 @nprofile…fw3p Was this Baraniuk et al? npub1c6dr99s0tdv8v94pz7p7f29wae0ck8sx0lj2zmc9r98l8uhlzfcsrv4fy5 Brian Vastag Oh, I'm on the front page of Rolling Stone right now, kinda. Don't look at your phone lol. npub1c6dr99s0tdv8v94pz7p7f29wae0ck8sx0lj2zmc9r98l8uhlzfcsrv4fy5 Brian Vastag After months of trying to get an electrician out to troubleshoot my rooftop PV system, I have one scheduled for Monday. I'll give it 50-50 odds that he'll show up. Tradespeople on Kauai have more work than they can handle so it comes down to connections & luck. (The law partially passed but some big provisions were cut.) Turns out I should've pitched a review of a documentary. This is a comprehensive look at the new film "The Age of Disclosure," which premiered at SXSW on Sunday. npub1c6dr99s0tdv8v94pz7p7f29wae0ck8sx0lj2zmc9r98l8uhlzfcsrv4fy5 Brian Vastag @nprofile…f2yr Do you know about the 8 Bit Big Band? (went to grad school at A&M)....and yeah, I don't think I've ever seen another pub/laundromat anywhere. npub1c6dr99s0tdv8v94pz7p7f29wae0ck8sx0lj2zmc9r98l8uhlzfcsrv4fy5 Brian Vastag And another one: https://www.indiewire.com/criticism/movies/the-age-of-disclosure-review-sxsw-alien-documentary-1235100024/ npub1c6dr99s0tdv8v94pz7p7f29wae0ck8sx0lj2zmc9r98l8uhlzfcsrv4fy5 Brian Vastag I guess it will get resolved in the Hollywood trades. npub1c6dr99s0tdv8v94pz7p7f29wae0ck8sx0lj2zmc9r98l8uhlzfcsrv4fy5 Brian Vastag I wonder how the tension between "34 high-ranking US military and intelligence officials say on the record that non-human intelligence is real & visiting us here on Earth" and "hahahahahaha you bunch of fuckin' kooks" will resolve. npub1c6dr99s0tdv8v94pz7p7f29wae0ck8sx0lj2zmc9r98l8uhlzfcsrv4fy5 Brian Vastag My buddy who has been a #coffee roaster in D.C. since 2009 is getting out of the business. Beans are suddenly 20-25% more expensive...one reason he cites is that USAID had a program that successfully switched farmers in Central & South America from coca to coffee. And he (my friend) says the coffee (green/unroasted) bean market is VERY sensitive to economic instability. npub1c6dr99s0tdv8v94pz7p7f29wae0ck8sx0lj2zmc9r98l8uhlzfcsrv4fy5 Brian Vastag Just ordered a new cabin air filter for my car ...$10 and a YouTube video showing me how to change it (easily) is a much better deal than whatever the dealer was going to charge. npub1c6dr99s0tdv8v94pz7p7f29wae0ck8sx0lj2zmc9r98l8uhlzfcsrv4fy5 Brian Vastag @nprofile…ycy2 When I lugged my ST to college in 1989 I don't think I'd ever suspect there'd still be fans 35 years later! npub1c6dr99s0tdv8v94pz7p7f29wae0ck8sx0lj2zmc9r98l8uhlzfcsrv4fy5 Brian Vastag @nprofile…48vs I'm so happy with my 2022 Kia Niro that still has audio and climate etc on physical switches. The newer models went all touchscreen. npub1c6dr99s0tdv8v94pz7p7f29wae0ck8sx0lj2zmc9r98l8uhlzfcsrv4fy5 Brian Vastag No, Heidi, we don't set our clocks ahead *ever *so dinner is still an hour away. It's tragic, I know. npub1c6dr99s0tdv8v94pz7p7f29wae0ck8sx0lj2zmc9r98l8uhlzfcsrv4fy5 Brian Vastag Happy #caturday from Lele. npub1c6dr99s0tdv8v94pz7p7f29wae0ck8sx0lj2zmc9r98l8uhlzfcsrv4fy5 Brian Vastag @nprofile…3lmk that sounds....sub-optimal. good luck. npub1c6dr99s0tdv8v94pz7p7f29wae0ck8sx0lj2zmc9r98l8uhlzfcsrv4fy5 Brian Vastag @nprofile…qvu5 I love THE library but our town's library is the moldiest place I've even set foot in and I'm surprised the librarians are still alive. There are plans to replace it but this is Hawaii and so you multiply a factor of 5 to 10 onto how long it might take something to happen. npub1c6dr99s0tdv8v94pz7p7f29wae0ck8sx0lj2zmc9r98l8uhlzfcsrv4fy5 Brian Vastag @nprofile…g74z Oh yep there it is...it's definitely of a time. npub1c6dr99s0tdv8v94pz7p7f29wae0ck8sx0lj2zmc9r98l8uhlzfcsrv4fy5 Brian Vastag @nprofile…ty5t I read this when it came out and loved his dogged investigation. (I lived in Mpls for years.) npub1c6dr99s0tdv8v94pz7p7f29wae0ck8sx0lj2zmc9r98l8uhlzfcsrv4fy5 Brian Vastag Got my raspberry pi 5 set up as a Plex server and ditched Spotify. It's been fun rediscovering my own music catalog and I've been adding some live shows from Internet archive and other sources. One issue is that Plex doesn't handle metadata for rare stuff very well but that's pretty minor. npub1c6dr99s0tdv8v94pz7p7f29wae0ck8sx0lj2zmc9r98l8uhlzfcsrv4fy5 Brian Vastag @nprofile…3zh9 Oh yeah I guess that makes sense.
