I think Jacob Caxon is being honest about how people within AI companies talk about the dangers. That community is extremely forthright about the risks of the tech, and about how to deal with it. This is where a lot of the "bad marketing" critiques originate from. They said their worries up front.

I can describe what I want and the computer writes that software for me. Useful.

2026-03-31 15:14:24 GMT

We see the ability for users to write algorithms and software for themselves as extremely worthwhile. What we think is garbage is a bot to take people’s clothes off. I think there’s a pretty wide gap there

2026-03-31 14:54:51 GMT

Devs in the atproto community! I will be organizing some meetups in the near future and will be reaching out
Also- don’t hesitate to reach out if you want to discuss the state and future of the ecosystem, what we’re doing with attie, or anything else. I can’t just … open my DMs but we’ll find a way

2026-03-31 03:00:57 GMT

The way we use the time and capital we have is pretty fixedly in service of this
And there are some questions about where we throw the money we raised or the time we have, which I get
The meetings I’m in aren’t about how we cash in. They’re about how to make mission impact

2026-03-31 02:50:32 GMT

As I said elsewhere
I am basically radicalized about this. We fight now for personal computing and personal agency or we lose another decade to closed clouds
We push now for an open internet and open models. Nobody is going to hand it to us because they’re nice

2026-03-31 02:47:50 GMT

I’m going to be starting a virtual meetup for agentic personal computing so we can all row in the same direction
I don’t care if it’s Attie, I care if it’s the atmosphere

Wonderful to see everyone and talk about the atmosphere this week. The conf proved there are at least 350 great people in the world.

I'm going to be really busy this week with the conference, so if everybody could avoid announcing exciting things about their work or the Atmosphere for the next 7 days that would be great

2026-03-21 18:34:31 GMT

The Atmosphere is a new open network.
The features:
- Your account works on all atmosphere apps
- You can switch to a new provider with no fuss
- Easy to make your own apps on it
- Works great with personal websites
And, Bluesky is an atmosphere app.

2026-03-21 01:43:11 GMT

sat on a bean bag too fast and let out a middle aged panic scream

2026-03-21 00:31:43 GMT

It's a lot cheaper to host sub-100k-user social spaces. Hold on let me get claude to diagram this amazing insight

2026-03-21 00:30:12 GMT

Apps on atproto permission spaces are probably going to be way cheaper to run

2026-03-20 20:35:39 GMT

I dont have exact numbers off the dome though, and there are a lot of variables. I certainly am not suggesting that a bluesky app server is cheaper than the mastodon server mentioned above

2026-03-20 20:33:48 GMT

Then you have to ask, how many readers do you have?
The network may produce the same amount of activity for 2 different instances, but the app will be much cheaper for 1 reader vs 1k readers vs 1M readers, etc

2026-03-20 20:33:06 GMT

the next question would be, what kinds of features do you support
The following feeds are actually super expensive to compute, for example. If you dont have a following feed in Tangled, it will likely be cheaper than an equivalently popular Bluesky

2026-03-20 20:27:46 GMT

It was a super conscious choice in atproto to move the account hosting into a separate service which doesn't pay those costs and consequently can stay cheap!

2026-03-20 18:54:39 GMT

Big day! @[email protected] will remain deeply involved as CIO and I'm personally excited she's dedicating more time on the future of atproto.
I'm also very pleased that @[email protected] is joining us as the interim CEO. He seems like a thoughtful, experienced person who cares about the open internet.

2026-03-08 22:01:07 GMT

My most optimistic take is that IT departments in non-software-oriented companies might be able to expand their scope to creating and maintaining inhouse software. Based on the level of expertise still required in the current generation of models, I think that's a reasonable idea

2026-03-08 22:01:07 GMT

Regarding the employment future around software, it's hard to make predictions right now without knowing where the model capabilities land. I barely know how to think about hiring right now.

2026-03-08 22:01:07 GMT

This would essentially displace the saas industry and distribute the jobs outwards, and - you know, hopefully - lead to a better software industry, because shrinkwrapped software from megafirms sucks anyway

2026-03-08 22:01:07 GMT

I think this is super real, and I want the conversation to move here. The longer we stay in the "is it useful" debate, the longer we defer taking action to protect ourselves in a changed world.

2026-03-08 22:01:07 GMT

I am pretty concerned about a world where there's only 2-3 companies that can run these models. I have been spending the last few days idly musing about a coop that sets up hardware and runs the open models.

2026-03-08 22:01:07 GMT

Somebody recently posted here about how people ai coding are able to solve their own needs but not make good software for other people. That tracks to me. That's where I think dedicated professionals could still be very necessary. Again, at the current model abilities.

2026-03-05 21:58:49 GMT

From my perspective, AI can be used for good and for bad, and I’m asking myself how it can improve personal computing. I think agents can make people more independent from big business, not less.

2026-03-05 21:58:49 GMT

Part of why we've openly talked about our use of coding agents is to be transparent about it. It's also because it's a shocking change to our practice, and I frankly don't know how I could avoid talking about it as a software enthusiast. I genuinely can't believe what these things can do.

2026-03-05 21:58:49 GMT

On a personal level, I've been a software engineer since I was 12. I joke about the quality of my code, but the reality is that I take it incredibly seriously. The source of those jokes is humility to how difficult it is to write complex software and avoid bugs, or outages.
